After listening to The Killer's cover of Hotel California, I've come to the conclusion that there are some songs which are simply too legendary to cover and release as your own single.

So I'm wondering if any of you guys agree with me, and if so, what songs you think are just too iconic and legendary to be covered/released.

Just off the top of my head I think
    Hotel California - The Eagles
    Yesterday - The Beatles
    Nothing Else Matters - Metallica
Stairway To Heaven - Led Zep

(obviously I'm cool with live covers and jams, I'm not that uptight)

Tonight, Tonight - The Smashing Pumpkins
Just Like Heaven - The Cure
How Soon Is Now? - The Smiths
    Hey Jude - The Beatles

That's all I can think of right now.

Also, I see a pattern in the artists listed in this post.

 Ok to create a legendary song you're band name bust begin with "The"

I was gonna say Tonight, Tonight myself, but I thought maybe I'm biased since it's like my favourite song ever.

Any song by Jimi Hendrix. There are way too many untouchable songs for me to list though. Unfortunately alot of them already have been with the majority being rather awful.

Better make it most, if not all Pumpkins songs, and a number of Beatles songs.

    Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
The Cure - Boys Don't Cry (I've heard far too many diabolical covers of this)
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (See: Flyleaf)

Unless a band totally changed a style of the song or did something really creative with the cover, I've always thought that rerecording another band's song and calling it your single was kinda lame no matter whose song it was.

I'd like to suggest Lady Gaga's Poker Face...

Not because its a legendary song that is too good to be covered, but because I absolutely can't stand it and am tired of hearing 50475409 covers of it..... ugh

I love the song, but seriously, the covers suck.

I will however say that Paparazzi really shouldn't be covered. Mainly because that's the best song that I've heard come out of the Top 40 in almost 5 years, so yeah.

I'll agree with this and fully admit I really like "Paparazzi".

    ----------------------------
As for 'untouchable' songs, personally I'm pretty open and believe there aren't any songs which should never be covered - if a band can do the song justice, who am I to stop them. That being said, there are some horrible covers out there.

Completely depends on how well the band does it.

Yeah no one should cover Korn. It just doesn't work without Jon Davis.
