I think neither of us could prove in any way how many fans they actually lost.
We can't take CD sells into consideration really. What we could consider is the sold out concerts. Have you noticed the ticket prices, have you been to a show? It's expensive as hell (imo) and they still manage to sell them.

And New Divide: The song was No 1 in the Rock Charts for 16 or 17 weeks. That's damn impressive. A LOT of people must like the song. What I've done was pretty long up there too, did better than anything ffrom HT and Meteora I think. So again, not very sure about having lost have the fanbase. And even if they did, they obviously gained new ones, so whatever.

Unless of course you happened to be around when those albums came out and noticed a similar pattern of "what the fuck is this shit" every time an album came out and watched it.

Anyway, it was a joke. Partly. Don't breathe too much into it.

^ This. It's just hard to keep that in mind when you hear something for the first time. :) While they proved that with "Minutes To Midnight", upon first listen, as a listener, you kind of feel the need to anchor it to something familiar. Which is why, despite all the experimentation that might've gone into that album, you could still think the sound is just really generic and whatever.

The songs on that album don't sound like songs by any other band ... with the exception of U2, perhaps.

It takes anywhere between a few listens to a few years to look at something your favourite band put out and say, ""Minutes To Midnight" is actually pretty f**king amazing and no other band actually sounds like Linkin Park do!"

Linkin Park could do anything, and what they do is really unique and different. It's just hard to see at first; sometimes, it's just a little more subtle.
