Linkin Park should just copy Charlie Parker. He does everything right, that guy is the man. Everyone should sound like Charlie Parker.

Muse are the next level up from Linkin Park, or maybe a few levels up. They're better instrument players and better songwriters among other things. I'm not saying they're some omnipotent amazing band who've never gotten anything wrong but for me, and likely a lot of other people, they are clearly better than LP at this point.
There's one more thing about Muse that I don't think people will be able to disagree much on, regardless of whether you like them, and this is the crux of the point I'm trying to make about them: Muse aren't a self-conscious band. At times LP seem pretty much the exact opposite of not self-conscious. Muse have a much better and more confident mentality when it comes to developing and trying different things. So do Thrice. But it's also a realistic target.

Do I want them to be a Muse clone? No.

Do I want them to have the same appetite for experimentation, and skill in their music as Muse? Yes.

dean said it, thrice should be the benchmark, seriously. still i doubt that any member in lp has near the quality of either thrice member.

Not really Muse whoring, but they just came out with a new album so people are going to be talking about what's recent. There's a lot of Muse whoring in the Muse thread in Other Music, but that's justified. :p

I'd go watch "Stockholm Syndrome" live from Wembley on YouTube. You might understand why they're used as a benchmark for fantastic musicianship.

LP can never go the Radiohead way, Chester's voice is too dynamic and not suited to that kind of experimentation. All the Muse comment means is that they should do something as solid with their sound as Muse has done with this album.

Ha ha. That's true. However, Muse has their own sound now. They used to sound like Radiohead, I'll admit.

I know we're talking a lot about Muse, but I actually think that LP is probably trying to move in a similar direction stylistically and creatively as another band that a lot of LPA members enjoy, Nine Inch Nails. Chester twittered recently that he absolutely loves NIN, Mike is all about electronica these days, and the breakdown of "New Divide" sounded stylistically similar to NIN.

Don't you mean not dynamic enough? Because if it were too dynamic, it'd be great for him to do some experimentation like that.

At least they never blatantly ripped Radiohead off. Or anyone else, for that matter.

Chester's voice is fairly dynamic i'd say, Thom Yorke has that creepy english not so dynamic voice going for him, and it tends to work well with their music.

I absolutely agree on the New Divide comment. Heavily, heavily influenced.

This tweet you referred to, I couldn't find it.

But I'd be glad if Linkin Park drove themselves towards something like how Nine Inch Nails sounds ... whatever that is. And I do agree that "New Divide" (and a fair few other songs by Linkin Park, perhaps) seems to draw from that kind of thing. :)

That seems to be the sort of direction they're heading in, or part of it, going by what they've said so far. Not necessarily sounding exactly like NIN but having a more electronica-based sound.
