"If You Were Here" I didn't sleep at all last night Instead I read by candlelight All of the letters you had sent Recounting all the nights we spent I wonder often where they've gone All disappearing into dawn And each seemed shorter than the last Now I sit thinking of nights past I can't help but laugh at your words And even if I feel absurd I know you'd want me to smile bright If you were here with me tonight The sun is peaking through the clouds Pushing past all its snow-white shrouds It warms my room like you were there And shining off your auburn hair I often wonder where you are If you still shine like my bright star This night was shorter than the last Because I thought about our past I can't help but laugh at the thought That you're the one I almost caught I know you'd tell me to move on If you were here, but now you're gone The morning spills into the day And I've got nothing left to say I had you once, what's done is done Now you're the voice that I run from I often wonder if you know That you're the reason that I've grown Last night was shorter than the last I finally put aside our past I can't help but laugh at myself I'll put these thoughts back on the shelf I know you'd laugh, I know you'd cry If you were here with me tonight
Even though the rhyming scheme happens a lot, it works. You can never rhyme TOO much if you make it work, unlike random words, just so you can rhyme for rhyme's sake (Which is NOT what you have done here) I personally loved this one. I often wonder if you know That you're the reason that I've grown Last night was shorter than the last I finally put aside our past
