And before anybody gets into a tissy about it, just know. It's not about the views. It's about me hating that bands have to throw politics into their damn music. I hear music to escape from reality, not remain in it.
That sounds like a Throwdown album title. Seriously though, Green Day has been one of my favorite bands for years and I enjoyed American Idiot; I'm confident that they'll put out something good
I'm 50/50 on it. I think it's cool that they believe in something so passionately that they want to share their views with the world. Not everyone will like it and I'm sure they know that. At least they are taking risks. At the same time though it does get annoying when you don't want to hear music involving politics. That's when I listen to their older material. It gives it a nice balance.
The song titles and info sounds pretty awesome,. Still, it'll be hard as hell for them to top American Idiot.
The songs sound interesting, but i'm worried that there will be a lack of change. Whenever I read one of the song descriptions, I would get really excited at the beginning because it would be like "It starts out with strings and violin" or something like that, and I would be like "cool, they're experimenting!". Then it would go on to say "then it turns into an awesome guitar riff", and i'm like "oh, never mind, then". I'm just worried that it will sound kind of samey.
I can't say, because i've only heard American Idiot, but my understanding was that that album was a little bit more experimental for them. Also, I just found out that Butch Vig is producing this. Woohoo!
Damn Green Day and all the other bands who express their political views through their music. If only we weren't being forced to listen to them... oh wait.
lol so true. BUT Greenday fans might be annoyed by it because they like the music but over the top of it they're getting social commentary so they can't enjoy it as much.
meh as long as they come up with good lyrics im not gonna complain, but anymore of that When September Ends jizz and i will shoot myself lawl
That is true. I suppose you could say that Green Day have had political/social themes in some of their lyrics for a long time, though, right back to when they first recorded songs such as Welcome To Paradise. Not always to the degree that they've made concept albums about it but yeah. I understand not liking particular lyrical themes but to me it doesn't usually seem to be that hard to filter it out, even when songs get overplayed.
I don't like overly preachy albums either, but was American Idiot really that bad? Other than the title track and Holiday, there wasn't really much politics to speak of. Seems to me that those two tracks (while great) were just put on the album to capitalize on 2004's "Buck Fush!" mentality, since you could take them away and still have the entire rock opera going on. This new one seem like it will be much, much more political though, which is lame, because very few bands can pull off such lyrics without coming across as cheesy and pandering. To me, at least.
I don't care about politics in music. Artists should be able to speak their mind through the music they create without worry that their fans won't like it. After all music is one of the most powerful forms of expression and art...if you don't like it then don't listen to it. Politics and music will always coincide with each other, particularly in genres such as punk rock (and let's not get into a whole debate about whether American Idiot was punk rock or whether Green Day sold out their punk rock roots lalalala) simply because the whole ideology of punk was anti establishment and war and pro human rights. Each member of Green Day grew up idolising their favourite punk artists. Personally I though American Idiot was one of Green Day's best albums and the political nature of the album was vital to it's sound and success. I am however sick of it. Video channels and radio stations overplayed the singles to the point where the majority of the time I change the channel/station whenever they come on. It's ridiculous when you stop to think that there were 5 singles...one of which came with an 11 minute video (and was still something like 6-7 minutes shortened), another with a 6 minute video and each of them were as overplayed as the previous one. 4 years they're still overplayed. That's why alot of people hate the album I'm sure.
