I patent Nintendo made in June of this year was just revealed, and it has left several people (me included) in a state of confusion.

Heres the article outlining the patent: http://kotaku.com/5127251/nintendo-patent-reveals-potential-paradigm-shift-in-design?skyline=true&s=x

And here's the opinions of some game developers: http://kotaku.com/5127816/developers-respond-to-nintendos-hint-system-patent?skyline=true&s=x

So......I don't know what to think of this. It's an interesting idea, and could be neat if implemented correctly. I think that this could be useful as a sort of in-game walkthrough. Sometimes you just don't know what to do, and you need some help, which this could give. The "digest" mode, though, seems rather redundant. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo does anything with this.

In all honesty this is pathetic. To me its the challange that makes games fun... And as one of the reviewers said, what about non linear gameplay... that just wouldnt work at all.... IE Grand Theft Auto... Or RPG's, they cant make videos for every character based on what you might be wearing or your level or your skills. '

If they want to go and add this mode to like, little kid games thats great and I think itd help them out alot, but I think trying to implement this into most games would just cripple the game. My little brother often gets stuck in his E rated games and gives up and gets a new one... clearly the game might have been to hard for him, but than, I remember the days of N64 games which just seemed so much more challenging than modern kids games. But yet, I used to keep trying those games until I beat them... perhaps I was just a better gamer than my brother is, or perhaps companies these days just dont give kids reasons to keep playing. They dont make worthwhile games anymore... and I think this might edge games in that direction even more... if the only purpose of a game becomes getting through it and seeing the story... you might as well watch a movie. I think nintendo needs to just stop this whole, making gaming for everyone thing, and bring back the days of Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazoie, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda (the new one was just pathetic imo) etc. These games were so much more enjoyable and challenging than modern kids games and just really gave people reasons to keep playing and not give up when it gets hard.

Obviously it's not for everybody. Their games are easy enough as it is so maybe they want to hold our hands even more. As long as their plans don't affect their money makers in a negative way I have no problems.

While I agree with you partly, barney, I think that this could be useful. I use walkthroughs a lot; this could just be a more useful way of doing that. Also, it would get people to stop making overpriced strategy guides.

Just a move to cater for the masses who don't play games.

I guess the days of Battletoads and Contra are officially coming to an end.

The whole point of playing a game is to be challenged, and have fun figuring it out. It doesn't matter if it's video games or sports, without a challenge, it's not a game.

    edit:
Allow me to offer an easier solution: KEEP CHEATS IN VIDEO GAMES. There. Done. Too hard? Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A. :)

As long as it's optional, which it seems like it will be, I don't really mind.
