I was so exhausted last night that I just went to sleep right after Obama's speech. But anyway, here's some of my thoughts: -After the '04 election, I finally don't feel ashamed to live in Ohio anymore. And being a first-time voter and knowing I played a part in it feels pretty good. I'm 1 for 1, at the very least I know I'll be voting again in 2012 just to see if I can get some kind of streak going. -John McCain's speech was incredibly classy. At the very least, I've always felt that he's a great public speaker. -The Obama fans in Chicago proved just how much more respectful they are than McCain's. McCain's fans booed their asses off at any mention of Obama, there were even a few hecklers. But Obama's crowd was respectful enough to actually applaud McCain's efforts. -Some guy on CNN said something that really struck me, so I'll kind of paraphrase it: Starting with Reagan's election, the percentage of registered Democrats and Republicans in this country started getting closer and closer together, which continued all the way up until 2004, when it was almost a dead even 50-50. This election, the Democrats took about a 6-7 point lead, which is an enormous turnaround in 4 years. I think this is a turning point for this country's politics, we're finally ending an era of political sameness that started 28 years ago. -Unfortunately, I still have a lot to be disappointed about as far as the various nationwide ballot measures go. Proposition 8 is going to pass in California, Arizona and Florida both passed amendments banning gay marriage, Arkansas passed a measure preventing unmarried couples from adopting/fostering children (this was blatantly targeted at gay couples), and California's alternate energy sources measure failed. So congratulations America, you made the right choice for President. But there's still a ton of state-level stuff that needs to be fixed. *Edit* And this just in, Coleman vs. Franken in Minnesota wound up being close enough to fall under the state's mandatory recount law. Greaaaaaat.
Stayed up all night to watch the election last night and couldn't be happier that Obama one. What does make me laugh though is the sheer bitterness I keep seeing from McCain supporters. I'm so glad about the result and wish I could have done more than just sit at home and watch.
Thank you for voting for Obama, I know you and I did not agree on a lot of things but I am very confident that not just you and I....but America, made the right choice last night. For what it's worth, Bush's congratulatory speech towards Obama was very classy. A respectful end to his second term as president.
Proposition 8 passed. This seriously makes me want to cry. As a bisexual, and with family members that are gay, living in the state of California, its a sad day. I can't believe as with as large of a gay population that lives here, there's still so much hatred and intolerance. I can take a bit of solace in the fact that at least more of the people in the county where I live voted against it then for it. Still, I hope that someday, the attitude will change, and we can all have equal rights.
Now that Obama won the presidency, I remember the time I saw him in person: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v311/carved_in_black/Barack%20Obama/100_3466.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v311/carved_in_black/Barack Obama/100_3461.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v311/carved_in_black/Barack Obama/100_3454.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v311/carved_in_black/Barack Obama/100_3453.jpg
