There is only so much a President can do to affect the economy. His tax cuts helped spur the crappy economy inherited from Clinton that was enhanced by 9/11 and the now stupid Iraq war. The housing bubble bursting last year was inevitable and anyone following economics knows that. Sorry, you cant just blame Bush, McCain, etc. as both parties are responsible for high oil and gas prices. And honestly, you can mostly blame the Dems since they had control of Congress for the majority of the years since the last oil and gas crisis in this country. Their policies to stop offshore drilling, no new refineries and not tapping Alaskan reserves set us up for our current situation. Its always easy to blame the current administration but the fact is this has been impending failure for about 30 years. When has he used his POW experience for political gain? If its anyone, its the press that talks about it and not him.
Every single gaffe McCain as made, his campaign said something along the lines of "How dare Barack Obama attack a POW of 5 years."
Exactly. It was even used to defend his choice of music (ABBA) as he said his knowledge of music froze at the time before he was captured. Doesn't matter that ABBA didn't actually form till after he was captured/released. *EDIT* And I find it funny how people paint Obama as the flip flopper yet a page exists detailing 75 things in which McCain has changed his tune on: http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/flipflops He's even vowed to vote against bills he wrote HIMSELF.
But how about everything else his campaign has used the POW line on? People are going to defend him and say he was joking around, but I feel such "jokes" are a slap in the face to other POWs who have served in Vietnam or previous wars. Mind you, McCain was not the only one who was captured in the war. It's making light of such an experience, and in certain circumstances using it for political gain.
It's not making light of the situation. He's allowed to make a joke about his taste in music and how it froze in time from being a POW without it being offensive. Seriously. You guys grab onto any tiny thing to make a big deal out of nothing. And yeah, he probably is using it for political gain, McCain is an idiot.
I mean you no offense since we're friends and everything, but you've been doing the same thing every time you've pointed out the couple times Obama's stumbled during speeches and making a big deal out of it. It's sort of stupid for McCain to make light of a situation like that. You don't hear girls making jokes about being raped, do you? Or Japanese people making jokes about having bombs dropped on their heads, right? ABBA didn't even form until after he returned to the States so it doesn't even make sense anyway. Yeah, it's sort of silly to hold something like that against him, because it's actually quite trivial and doesn't matter at all, but it's still not right for him to joke about it, whether he suffered through the ordeal or not. He's essentially doing the same thing John Kerry did: "I have three Purple Hearts! Vote for me!"
I agree. Unless I've missed something it's not like he made a joke about his actual experiences as a POW anyway. At the same time he and his supporters seem to milk it a little bit.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/21/mccain-camp-plays-pow-car_n_120428.html http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/21/fineman-mccain-is-trivial_n_120511.html These are official quotes and statements, and have been carried by several news outlets and not just HuffPo. Granted its more his 'camp' doing this for him, but considering McCain has not done anything to be like 'hey...come on now this is getting ridiculous, lets not politicize my past' shows that he condones such statements being made. It's almost as if every response to an Obama attack has something having to do with his POW experience tacked on the end. Give me a break.
I generally point out Obama speech stumblings because everyone did it to Bush, and that meant that he was an idiot, but everyone overlooks Obama's speaking. That's why I've ever brought that up. And if he really wants to make jokes about his experience, let him do it. Maybe that's how he deals with it, I don't know, but why does it mean that if he can make a joke of his experience that he's making light of it? Just saying. I'm not trying to defend him, because I don't like McCain, I'm just saying. And yeah, I can certainly see the comparison with Kerry. Bunch of idiots if you ask me .
I think you are right about his campaign using it as a silly crutch. Some of it is just plain ridiculous but I still do not see it as a means for political gain. I dont know how many pairs of socks I own, does that make me an elitist too? All politicians are elitists because we made them that way. Kerry really is an ID10T though.
The entire convention tonight was about how McCain is a POW and you should vote for him. I'm sorry, but if you don't think he's using his POW status for political gain, you're ignorant.
Palin was fiesty and showed she belongs no matter what the liberal biased media has to say about her. Calling out Obama on his lack of any significant political record (except his memoirs ) while spelling out her own was a great counter to what has been said about her so far. The VP debate should be very, very interesting next month. One of my fav lines:
Sarah Palin's a fucking liar. And she has absolutely NO FUCKING BUSINESS WHATSOEVER attacking Obama on his experience when she's been a mayor of a podunk little town in Alaska and then governor for all of 20 months. Her political achievements? I'll let you choose from the list. Sounds like a winner to me
Agreed. She hasn't got the background to even make a poke at Obama. She's got no more than 5 years of any sort of political experience, only about two of which have been executive powers. If you ask me, Obama is by far more experienced, as is Biden.
Everything on that list makes me sick to my stomach, especially the women's issues. She has some nerve. This woman is not right at all.
