CBN Correspondent David Brody: Real quick, the born alive infant protection act. I gotta tell you that's the one thing I get a lot of emails about and it's just not just from Evangelicals, it about Catholics, Protestants, main – they're trying to understand it because there was some literature put out by the National Right to Life Committee. And they're basically saying they felt like you misrepresented your position on that bill. Obama: Let me clarify this right now. Brody: Because it's getting a lot of play. Obama: Well and because they have not been telling the truth. And I hate to say that people are lying, but here's a situation where folks are lying. I have said repeatedly that I would have been completely in, fully in support of the federal bill that everybody supported – which was to say – that you should provide assistance to any infant that was born – even if it was as a consequence of an induced abortion. That was not the bill that was presented at the state level. What that bill also was doing was trying to undermine Roe vs. Wade. === The federal version of the bill in which Obama is referring to was actually signed into law August 5th, 2002. Take it in whichever way you like, but that's about as direct of an answer to this as you're gonna get. The whole 'Barack Obama supports infanticade' bullshit is fucking nonsense (pardon my French) and it's all an example of how Republicans will twist a vote into something far worse than it truly is to try and paint their opponent as a baby killer. It's not only childish of them, it's slanderous. Obama was trying to protect Roe Vs Wade.
It doesn't make much sense to say that, once President, she'd get a "better feel for it," or however you put it (I'm kind of way too lazy to go back and look, ha). If you're the VP, you have to have a feel for it no matter what. People knock Obama for his lack of experience, but he looks like a 300 year old man with 299 years of political service next to Palin.
As impossible as it is to tell why exactly McCain picked Palin as his running mate, I cant help but feel it was basically taking advantage of the buzz that Clinton had for being a woman running for office and Obamas decision not to choose Clinton. It just seems desperate to me.
That's exactly the reason why he picked her, and anybody who refuses to see that is effin oblivious. This is a desperate attempt to take the Clinton base away from Obama, plain and simple.
"Now, he said this last Saturday night, and he's lying through his teeth about it, and he's been caught, and the campaign has admitted that he lied..."-Rush Limbaugh http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_082108/content/01125112.guest.html I know, sourcing Rush Limbaugh is an "automatic fail," but just read it. EDIT: http://hotair.com/archives/2008/08/18/team-obama-acknowledges-infanticide-lie/ http://www.bucksright.com/obama-campaign-admits-infanticide-vote-lie-460 If you prefer.
No shit....anything can happen, and the VP is one heartbeat away from being president. If McCain wins the election and keels over from the excitement on election day, we don't have another election. Sarah Palin becomes president right away, with no training at all. The VP needs to be ready to step in at anytime throughout the term, not after a couple years of training. If the VP isn't qualified to be president, they're not qualified to be VP. Simple as that. And I think women should be insulted by this pick. McCain thinks they're stupid enough to not vote on the issues, but rather vote on gender. I hope all of the women who were supporting Obama before the Palin pick see right through this bullshit and work even harder to get Obama elected.
I think you need some clarification behind the science of this supposed "infanticide". These aren't fetuses that were born "healthily" by any stretch of the imagination. The (rare) procedure is a labor-induced abortion performed on fetuses in the second trimester; reason being the doctor on hand detects an abnormality in the child's health that would prevent it from surviving and/or potentially harm the mother. The conservative medias portrayal of this procedure as doctors killing perfectly healthy babies is both irresponsible and fucking atrocious.
Unfortunately Tim this is just a prime example of the conservatives twisting a candidates stance on a bill for purely political purposes. My sister lost a child about 2-3 years ago to a rare genetic condition called Trisomy 18 which means the child was developing without a 18th chromsome. For those are unaware, this of course means that the baby (if it had survived labor) wouldve been born with severe genetic deformaties and possibly wouldn't have lived past its first birthday. Over time, the baby's health deteriorated as time went on and eventually my sister was posed with the difficult decision of forcing labor (meaning the baby wouldn't make it) or keeping it in her at the risk of killing herself due to the major health implications. Long story short she couldn't go through with the pregnancy and the child passed away. My sister continued to have health problems after the fact and didn't truly recover until over a year later. She still has the emotional scars from it, but I would never pretend to understand how she feels or expect any of you here to either. Its why you can't just ban this altogether or remove a womans right to choose because sometimes they have no choice. Think about that before you declare abortion/the procedure as inhumane or a violation of human rights. You didn't have to go through what my sis went through.
QFT. I feel extremely insulted...and angry. The thought of McCain winning the election, and God forbid something happens to him, and this Palin woman steps in as the President is unsettling and downright scary, in my opinion. I didn't think anyone could be worse than Bush as President, but this...this would be it if it should happen. We need Obama to win now more than ever.
That's the same way I feel. At least if Clinton would've been the Democratic nominee and won the Presidency she would've at least had the experience and wouldn't have had to be "taught" how to be President. It's either you're ready to be President or you're not. Palin is not ready at all. McCain chose her because she's (arguably) attractive and a woman and is hoping to sway voters. He probably didn't even know she existed until a week ago.
Yes, but, these were fetuses that were supposed to be aborted, and either way, the fetus is OUTSIDE of the womb, and would stand a fighting chance. "But I saw a program today about "Labor Induced Abortion". This is a procedure that normally takes place between five and six months, and usually with a baby that doctors have diagnosed to have a disability (such as Down Syndrome). At 5-6 months the baby's lungs are usually not developed, so when the doctor induces labor the baby normally dies during childbirth. But in this interview with a nurse that worked in a Chicago hospital that performs these abortions, about 10-20% of the babies live after birth, and the abortion protocol is to just put them aside and let them die, which normally takes from a few minutes to an hour." http://chuckiedspeaks.blogspot.com/2008/08/labor-induced-abortion.html Now, I agree that if the baby were to harm the mother if she brought it to term, then yes, abort it. I'm weary on that, but if it meant the mother's life, it generally means the mothers life as well as the child's. However, what I'm pushing at is that Obama voted against a bill that said that all of these fetuses should legally get as much treatment as possibe. Yes, it's a small chance that the child will survive, but they should receive all the damned medical attention to try to save their life, even if the chances are slim. Who would leave a baby to just die? Imagine the pain of it dying because it can't breathe. That's so inhumane. EDIT: And I do admit that I was a bit off. I did some rsearch on what exactly the labor induced abortion was. The same point still stands, though.
Hmmmm...well I know some of you have been looking forward to what I have to say about the past few days' events. So, here it is.... First, Obama's speech on Thursday night was amazing. It wasnt the epicness I had hoped for (or dreamed about to be honest) but it is definitely one of the best speeches I have ever heard in my lifetime. I like what he had to say but he still hasnt fully convinced me about his plans for change. And now, of course, McCain's VP pick which has been so warmly discussed over the past few pages. As a reminder, the Constitution states that the qualification for President is being 35 years old, having been born in the US and residing for 14 years within the US. Having said that, I dont think Palin's background as a PTA Leader and short length of office as Alaska governor makes her any less "qualified" than Obama's drug background and community leader in south Chicago. In fact, they have nothing to do with the qualification debate whatsoever. That's just CNN, Fox and MSNBC talking. They are both as qualified to be as President as I am. Obama has been speaking about changing Washington from the outside and now there is an even fresher face added to the mix. I love it. If you feel Sarah Palin isnt right to be 2nd in line in to POTUS, dont vote for her. But dont insult someone just because she is a former beauty pageant contestant (sexist mentality) or was involved in the PTA. Yeah, she cares about her community and her children's education BOOOOO on her! Also, get some facts correct. Her involvement with Big Oil is to tax their record revenues in Alaska and give back a share to Alaskan citizens. She even exposed members of her own party with ethics violations when she was a member of the state's Oil and Gas Conservation commission. Her issue with the firing of the State Public Safety Commissioner will be investigated. Hardly something to hold over her head at this point. I will close by saying this only makes the race more interesting. I am still undecided but leaning towards Obama.
In today's world, simply meeting the minimum standards to be the President of the United States is not enough. Citizens want a leader with experience, which is what Obama, Biden and McCain bring to the table. Simply put, Palin doesn't have enough experience and is not qualified enough to be the President, let alone the Vice President. If something were to happen to McCain and she assumed office, it would be an absolute nightmare.
Then perhaps Congress should be petitioned to have the Constitution changed? Many things have changed over the course of this country. Being a politician wasnt even a full time job 230 years ago. People in Alaska had enough confidence in her experience to elect her governor so perhaps we should give her a fair shake before just believing what all the talking heads say about her.
And once again, Ron Paul is an idiot, and so is anyone else who can't see the differences between McCain and Obama.
Oh my god, can we STOP talking about Ron Paul? Can't anybody see that he is a racist, homophobic anti-semite that didn't get nominated because even the brainless Bush supporters...were wise enough to know the guy was a few apples short of a picnic basket? I don't have any issues with gay people (some of my friends are gay) but it cracks me up whenever I hear someone go "I'm gay and I support Ron Paul". I find that ridiculously funny, because Ron Paul doesn't support them. How do I know this you ask? Well... Let me present to you some literature that some Ron Paul supporters may find interesting (found from a website and internet research): Bigotry Against Atheists It should be noted that each of the following three positions contradict Paul's claims that he is a libertarian and that he supports individual freedom.
