Surely being a feminist and a republican politician is a contradiction of terms.

    Basically.

I don't know. It seems to me McCain chose her just to get those votes.

Obama could've just as easily picked Clinton as his running mate just to get those votes, but he chose not to.

True feminism is about equality and having rights. That's what she is, a true feminist, a leader. You're thinking about feminazis, what feminism has become. But she is a true feminist, what they started as and what they were intended to represent.

I personally think that McCain's running mate is a fantastic choice. She's a true conservative, a mother, her son is fighting in the war, and a huge thing about her: she didn't strive to be in office. She was chosen for her beliefs and whatnot. She started off in the PTA at her children's school. Her roots with office are not that of power, but that of a true leader.

Will: Maybe he did choose her for votes, but whether or not it was because he wanted votes, SHE is someone that I would vote for. Even if McCain would be a pretty sucky president, having her on his side can help to make a difference for the better.

And who noticed that Palin, when she was giving her speech, she was talking about her and McCain's accomplishments, not saying "I will" "I believe" and "I will." And she never bashed her opponents. Not once did she put down her opponents, or even mention them.

Seems stronger than promising false hopes and making empty promises.

At the end of the day, I think she should just shut up and stick to doing the dishes. Joking.

And Obama has 143 days of active service in the senate. And Palin has executive experience, she fought congress on their "bridge to nowhere" plan, and although she has no foreign policy experience, that isn't imporant because McCain has FAR more experience than Biden and Obama put together. And if something were to happen to McCain, Palin could surround herself with advisors who are experienced. That is a sign of a true leader. A true leader should not know it all, because then they get too powerful. They should be able to surround themselves with intelligent, experienced people.

I respect you Arlene but anybody who thinks Palin is even remotely experienced enough to be president needs to get their facts straight.

FYI: Obama has experience in politics prior to becoming a US senator. Miss beauty pageant however does not.

if advisors are making the decisions, then why elect a president in the first place? By that logic, anyone is qualified to be president if they can turn to their advisers for anything. The advisors give advice, but the president makes the ultimate decision. And I want a president who is qualified. McCain has showed with his poor judgement on things ranging from the economy to Iraq that he is not qualified. Sarah Palin, with under 2 years of governing Alaska (and whom is in the middle of a scandal I might add) has no experience with running a country and has no foreign policy experience either.

Obama has leadership experience going back to the middle 90s in the Illinois state legislature (the best Palin can offer is being in a fucking PTA). Biden has been in the senate 15 years longer than McCain has and is the chairman of the foreign relations committee. These guys have the experience and qualifications to be president. McCain and Palin don't.

If Mccain/Palin comes in, I give up trying to help the Alaskan wolves stob being slaughtered. If the veep is the Governor of Alaska and shit isn't being done now, what the fuck does a federal title going to do to help them.

    *sigh*

Palin's experience is akin to my uncle's experience. He's been on the county board for the better part of ten years now, but he'd never make a suitable governor here in Ohio.

The same goes for Palin. She's the governor of Alaska (and has only been for, what, three years?), and that no where near qualifies her to be the VP of the United States.

It's a wacky analogy but I think it works.

Derek: I didn't say that I thought she was qualified for president. For VP, yes, not president.

Yeah, Obama's experience includes consistently voting against a ban on killing live born babies that were intended to be aborted. Yeah, that's who I want to be president. And when he was asked on his opinion regarding when someone is eligible to be protected by basic human rights, this was how it went:

"Senator Obama, as a pastor I have to deal with this all the time, all the pain, all the conflicts. I know it's a very complex issue. Forty million abortions. At what point does a baby get human rights in your view?" -Pastor Rick Warren

OBAMA: Well (sigh). You know, I -- I, eh, er -- I think that whether you're looking at it from a theological perspective or, uh, a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity, uhhhh, you know, is above my pay grade.

What the eff kinda answer is that? He's not paid enough to know that answer?

Can I just ask a favor of everyone, before everything gets heated? (Not saying it has or will, mind.)

We're not the candidates, so let's not go attacking each other for our views. Respectfully disagree, but try not to make it personal.

That's how we'll end up with problems here.

I just felt that it was important to say that because of the fact that a lot of people have been banned in the past for flaming others for their views instead of having civil debates.

There are a lot of level-headed people here but I know (from experience) how easy it is to get carried away. That's why I've tried avoiding a lot of debates in the past couple months because I've come pretty close to getting banned in threads like these myself.

I'd rather not someone lose their cool, y'know?

This to me seems like Mccain's getting quite desperate trying to get women to vote for him i read somewhere don't remember where shes got ties with big oil and is being investigated for corruption and shes hardly got much experience in foriegn policies so imo you can't really play the experience card for her

by the way my sig kicks ass..just saying lol

Arlene, before I begin I would like to clarify with you that I do not want this to turn into a violent or bloody debate between the two of us; because we're obviously both good friends and need to know when to respect the others' political views. However, this is one moment where I can't just stand there without saying anything in response to you.

Since we have yet to get to the point of making it personal (and I don't intend to take it there), I would like to begin by directly rebutting what you said about Sarah being qualified enough to be a good VP but not as a good president. That arguement is highly flawed and I would like to explain just why it is so incorrect:

By definition, a Vice President "is the first person in the presidential line of succession, becoming the new President of the United States upon the death, resignation, or removal of the president, serving out the balance of that presidential term no matter how much or little time remains in it.".

The Vice Presidential candidate should be well rounded and qualified in all areas, compensating for any shortcomings the main candidate may have, while also being experienced and prepared enough to take the oath of office in the event their services are needed to lead the country.

Therefore, I have to ask you how you could say that Sarah is great enough to be a VP but not our President, when in the event McCain were to die in his first term (which is more likely considering his age and battles with cancer), she would take the oath of office and thus be in charge of running this county entirely. Do you not see the absolute DISASTER it would be to have someone as woefully unprepared as her in office when the woman didn't even know what a VP does everyday (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/29/sarah-palin-what-exactly_n_122514.html) yet was being considered for one of the most important positions of power in the country? We'd be more fucked than we are right now under 8 years of failed Bush/Cheney policies, and a war that we had no business waging in the first place.

Think about who you are defending here Arlene. I know you're for woman's rights, and Palin is a feminist so it plays in your favor...but have a listen to what we're trying to say here first. If McCain were to be removed from office, or die in his first term; we'd have a former Alaskan Beauty Queen, who was a PTA Leader, small town mayor, and 2 year Governor of Alaska WITH NO FOREIGN POLICY EXPERIENCE running the country. Knock Obama all you want, but he at least has passed some good legislation in his career and has picked someone more experienced than John McCain (as he's been elected longer) to be his Vice President.

I mean honestly, do you want another 8 years of what the country has gone through so far? Like Bush or not, you cannot sit here and tell me that we are not struggling as Americans and that this country isn't worse off than it was 8 years ago. Bush royally screwed us over in every sense of the word, and all McCain/Palin will acheive for us is more of the same. When both candidates have ties to big oil (McCain wants to give tax breaks to those big corporations), and when one of them (McCain) voted in agreement with Bush 90% of the time back in 2007, you know nothing will get accomplished over the next four years. We will get absolutely nowhere in creating alternative energy, and any promises McCain tries to offer will disintergrate under the pressure of George W. Bush to continue his failed policies and essentially offer up his (virtual) 3rd term as president.

Whether you're completely against abortion or for it in unique situations (i.e. rape), both McCain and Palin are out to make sure women don't even have a choice by working to repeal Roe Vs. Wade which was a landmark decision in the field of woman's rights.

While I myself do not fully support abortion and feel that it is being used as a severe form of birth control, to completely take away a woman's right to choose what she may do with her body and her baby is wrong and I will do whatever I can to make sure these two people never make their way into office. I will fight for this because if elected, they will drag this country down to the "gates of hell" that McCain always claims he will follow Al-Queda to, but never seems to explain just how he plans to get around to it.

This election is about change and reclaiming the American dream that's been robbed away from us. I suggest you take a cold hard look at who exactly you are trying to get elected into office, before you decide not to support Obama just because you think he's "all teleprompters" and has a shitty view on abortion.

    After all:

Are you sure you'd want to elect a bastard who decided it was better to eat cake with George Bush on his 69th birthday, the day Hurricane Katrina hit, than actually do something...I don't know....CHARITABLE about it?

Then again, I guess the deaths of innocent American citizens doesn't matter when the cake just tastes so damn good.

Again Arlene, this isn't personal...but I think you haven't "vetted" John McCain or Palin enough yet to know just how selfish they really are.

    ===
P.S. I still heart you, even though I utterly disagree with you politically :p

Firstly, Derek, I'd just like to laugh at the point that you completley disregarded what I was saying about Obama. Yes, I mentioned abortion, but that was NOT the impact of the message. The impact was that he denied a ban for the killing of live born babies that were intended to be aborted. I think abortion is your decision, one part of my views that isn't as conservative as the rest, but killing an actual baby? That was born, healthily, and killed because it was SUPPOSED to be aborted. He has consistently voted against a ban on this. That's pretty scary. I would rather have people crack down on abortion then to allow that. http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=59702 Read through that.

About Palin and the VP stuff, well, I think she could have potential. And yes, dear, I'm aware that if the president were to die that she would be the next in line. Duh. I just think that she could suffice as president once she were in office to get the taste of it. Got used to it. Right now, no, I don't think she's ready to be president, not by a longshot, but if she had time in office, I think she could.

I would also just like to say that I don't think that you've expanded away from the idea of Obama enough to realize that all he says are empty promises mixed in with quite a few "err" "uhm" and "I-uh"s. (7 minutes of stutters like that in a 40 minute speech. And everyone used to gripe on Bush's speaking.)

Again, even though politically I think you're a dingbat, I still love ya. <3
