Considering the popularity of the "what are you reading" thread, I thought some of you may be interested in forming a reading group, at least for a dry run (one book). I figure it might be a good way to help bridge a few gaps in our community, or at least give us some mental stimulation during the dog days of summer. We could even resurrect the LPA chat room to use once a week in discussing our thoughts, questions, criticisms, etc. Obviously, though, we're not going for an "Oprah Book Club" sort of regime; just a fun chat between friends. Anywho, if anyone is interested, please let me know in this thread. Also, feel free to recommend a book or two that you think could benefit from being read/discussed together. Thanks!
Omar, I'll only join in if it is like Oprah's Book Club. I want a monthly Omar's pick . *EDIT* Yes, I'm in.
You mean you want a whiny book about love lost? Just look for Fabio on the cover. Any recommendations, though? I'm thinking something around 300-400 pages, with ideas ripe for discussion. Preferably nothing "new" and "heralded." I'm tired of being told what's a good book, movie, etc.
The only book I am reading right now would likely not interest you. I am reading Dreams From My Father by Barack Obama. However, one book that still sticks in my mind is a book called The Black Dahlia Files by Donald H Wolfe. It explores the murder of Elizabeth Short and was a very captivating read.
Right now I'm reading Touching From A Distance by Deborah Curtis, but that's a biography. We could maybe start with something more... general. Something by John Steinbeck for instance.
I'll look into them. Thanks! Edit: Funny you mention Steinbeck. I'm reading East of Eden right now. I was even thinking The Road by Cormac McCarthy (author of No Country for Old Men).
Weather or not you hate the movie "The Ring" I suggest the books "Ring" "Loop" or "Spiral" by Koji Suzuki, it's a trilogy that is much deeper and much more entertaining than the movie, another plus is that you don't have to read all the books in order as each of them can be read as a stand alone book, but There's a nice surprise in loop AND a bigger one in spiral, it's so different from anything you think you know about "The Ring" it's very The Matrix-esque. Or if you want something different than horror or sci-fi try the crime novel "Rising Sun" by Micheal Crouton, but I really want to suggest Spiral and Rising Sun the most, as they are both mind blowing.
As of right now, I'm leaning towards The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It's not very long, has been well-received, and seems like an interesting read. Click here to read the synopsis.
If I can get the book I'll read it. if I can get to a library that is.. I'm in the middle of feck'n nowhere.
Im just waiting for Breaking Dawn to come out in August. If you liked The Da Vinci Code I would suggest Angels & Demons. Its supposed to happen before The Da Vinci Code but it is a completely different story involving Robert Langdon.
I'd so take part if I didn't have to buy every book we'd read. The library here is not so good, plus well...libraries ain't free over here.
I'm in, depending on the book we choose. If I cant get it, of course I cant participate, but still, I like the idea. I recommend Phantom Tollbooth, great read.
Everybody check their library and see if The Road by Cormac McCarthy is available. Those who don't have access to a library should see if an ebook/pdf file is within their reach (*cough cough*). If most people can't get to it, then we'll go with something older.
I think my library had it, but its pretty far away. I wonder where to get an Ebook... lol Edit: Scratch that, they have one on Books On CD and the hardcover is a wait for 27 days, almost a month. http://rvl.info/uhtbin/cgisirsi/2Vr949HVDd/RVL-ONLINE/261830190/123
There are a few libraries around here. I'll try finding it in the next couple of days, although I'm guessing his books are in demand after the film version of No Country For Old Men.
