If you're a dependent, you don't need the money. Your parents get extra money because you're dependent on them.

Everyone needs money but that's the way the government looks at it.

My dad hasn't gotten his yet because apparently the apartment complex where we live doesn't even exist. So my dad's check has been sitting at the post office for a good three weeks now but the IRS website never updated to say, "Hey, your check was undeliverable because we're fucking stupid."

My parents are only getting the base $1200 because they're married. You're supposed to get $300 per dependent but they're not getting the extra $600 (for me and my sister) for some fucking stupid reason.

If you're over 17, you can't be labeled as a dependent, so your dad won't get the extra 600 dollars. It sucks, but that's the way it is.

Catnip actually made me semi-high yesterday. I'm never playing with the cats with that shit again.

I thought $1200 was the most you could get.

What's a stimulus check? Is it like money you get when you have kids under 16?

No. Couples who are married get their $1200 and $300 for each dependent they claim, near as I understand it. Then again, I really haven't done a whole lot of research on it aside from conversations with my friend's dad (who's a guru of taxes, and it's kind of disconcerting, considering he'd be awesome at tax evasion).

@11DollarsGuy (I forgot your real name, sorry.)
If that's the case my dad's been illegally claiming me a dependent for the past four years and my sister the past two. Same with all my friends' parents.

It's President Bush's way of stimulating the economy. The plan was to give everyone who filed a tax return extra money to spend on things they need (for my family's case, it would've been food, as we literally have no food in the house, since my dad's laid off, since the government can't keep American jobs IN AMERICA), but half the people who REALLY, REALLY need the money aren't even getting what they're supposed to get.

If you're a full time student and live with your parents, you can be claimed dependent past age 17. That's the way I understand it.

I might be wrong, but my dad and mom were informed when my older sister turned 17 that she couldn't be declared a dependent anymore, and that when I turned 17, I couldn't be declared a dependent. Then again, I might be remembering wrong.

Either way, it's stupid as hell that this kind of thing happens this way.

My name's Iain by the way.

OK, that makes sense. I was a full-time student up until this past Tax Day. That means he won't be able to claim me next year unless I go back to school.

Oh...well this stimulus check thing doesn't sound bad at all then. It's like money in your hand! Well, most hands then.

Even if everyone did get their checks, it's not going to stimulate the economy. It's like they just ran out of ideas and said "fuck it... we'll throw money at the problem."

Yeah. It's a great idea and all but it seems way too complicated for its own good, especially considering all the delays and other problems they're having with sending the checks out. Only the people who have direct deposit (the money goes right into your bank account instead of arriving by check) have gotten their money. I don't know anyone who's gotten their paper check in the mail yet.

Well, throwing money is always better than legally stealing money from the people in forms of 'necessary taxes'.

Yeah the paper checks arrive this month based on the last two digits of your social security number. They have a schedule on the IRS site.
