    From HeavyMetalMusic.biz:

It looks like Green Day has gotten an early jump on what could be the album of the summer. They just don’t want any credit for it.

In similar fashion to when they transformed themselves from pop-punk also-rans (it was Time of Your Life’s fault, really) into vitriolic, rock opera composers getting heaps of praise, the band has uprooted their identity again.

The trio released their latest album Stop Drop and Roll online Tuesday. Only you won’t see the Green Day stamp anywhere on it — this time around they’re working under the pseudonym Foxboro Hottubs.

Rolling Stone reported that Foxboro apparently put a few tracks online in December but are only now owning up to the fact that it is in fact Green Day.

I checked out several of the tracks on their MySpace page this week and apart from Billie Joe Armstrong’s unmistakable voice, the band has veered off and stepped back embracing garage rock with a dash of surf. But all of it’s built to be played loud with the windows down.

Apparently well-known artists masquerading as other bands in search of a little room to breathe is the hip thing to do these days. Tom Petty has picked up the bass guitar and resurrected his band Mudcrutch from his pre-Heartbreaker days. Norah Jones even let loose her rocking (albeit soft) side with El Madmo. The band has an album due out May 29.

One hopeful thing here is that it looks like bands have learned that there’s nothing wrong with trying something new under the guise of another name — just as long as they don’t get wrapped up in compensating for something they lack. Remember Garth Brooks’ midlife crisis with the Chris Gaines thing? Nobody wants to see that again.

It was in fact true that the MP3s were up, which cracks me up, considering all the free MP3 albums right now. Sadly though, they were taken down, although they can be purchased at foxborohottubs.com as of right now.

I listened to a few tracks, and it sounds pretty good. I'm actually hoping to see more from this project.

I actually heard about this a while back, I heard one of the radio stations around here play one of the FHT songs at like 3 AM one night a few months ago. It's interesting stuff...I haven't really made a judgment about whether I like it or not yet though.

Hasn't Green Day done the whole alternate personas thing a couple of times before?

Sort of. There is/was a band called The Network, which was basically Green Day's "New Wave" alter ego, but it had six total members. Three of them were the guys from Green Day, Jason White (Green Day touring guitarist) was also in it, but it's kind of unknown who the other 2 were.

So they're to scared to come out as Green Day and change their sound?
I thought American Idiot showed they'd toughened up a bit in that aspect.

I think it's more that they realized they attracted so many 12 year-old girls who don't even know that Green Day existed before American Idiot, that they know they'll recieve one of the worst backlashes in music history if they put out anything under the Green Day name that isn't another American Idiot. Look at how many idiots were going "WTF have u heard dat new Green Day song Working Class Hero? It suckz!!!1one!" and it's pretty obvious that the majority of their fanbase that they attracted with American Idiot has little to no knowledge of music whatsoever.

Good then. They should've taught them a lesson, and used it as a good opportunity to expand the musical tastes of these 12 year old girls.
I just thought Green Day of well bands would know that taking risks can pay off.

This band is incredible for all the risks they take. Seriously.

So I'm confused...is "Foxboro Hot Tubs - Stop Drop and Roll" the new Green Day album (much like The Black Parade was temporarily MCR's new moniker just for that CD)....or, are Green Day still working on another disc AS Green Day?

Just don't wanna go around saying 'hey have you heard the new Green Day?!' if this isn't truly the new Green Day.

Stop Drop and Roll is essentially a side project that includes the members of Green Day and their live band. I believe there is also another album being released by Green Day themselves soon.

From what I understand, Foxboro Hot Tubs is more or less a side-project that's unrelated to the new Green Day album. It seems like something they did for fun, and I don't believe they're going to do any sort of touring for it. There's still supposed to be a new Green Day album coming out sometime this year.

On a side note... is it just me, or does the riff to "Mother Mary" sound an awful lot like Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl"?

Edit - Dean beat me to it. :p

That song was basically a rip off of Lust For Life anyway.

I noticed that as well, but I love the song, and there are only so many chord progressions that you can use. There's bound to be songs that sound alike.

Fans waiting for a new Green Day record are about to get one. Sort of: The Bay Area punks have just revealed that the rowdy garage-rock band called Foxboro Hot Tubs — who posted six tunes online in December — is in fact the rock superstars working under a pseudonym. And just as two of the new tracks are gaining traction on rock radio, Green Day have announced that the Foxboro Hot Tubs’ full-length album, Stop
Drop and Roll, will be out “any day.”

Billie Joe Armstrong and Co. say they consider the FHT album, recorded with perennial Green Day sidemen Jason White and Jason Freese, to be “the next Green Day record.” “We record live to an eight-track reel-to-reel machine,” they say in an e-mail to Rolling Stone. “We write songs as we go, on the fly, fast and spontaneous.”

From the design of the Foxboro Hot Tubs’ Website — which includes Sixties clips of girls dancing the Swim and the Jerk — to the style of music, Green Day are riffing on the aesthetic of classic garage bands like the Animals and the Kinks on this project. Specifically, their inspirations were “red wine and the Troggs,” they say.

The upbeat FHT tunes are presumably very different from the material the trio have been working on for the follow-up to their ambitious megahit, American Idiot, which sources expect out this year. “I want to dig into who I am and what I’m feeling at this moment — which is middle-aged,” Armstrong told Rolling Stone late last year. “We’ve been doing this for almost twenty years.”

The project gives Green Day a chance to blow off steam before forging ahead with their next official album. “This is them having fun,” says a source close to the band. And it’s not the first time they’ve used a pseudonym: In 2003, while working on American Idiot, Green Day released a spiky New Wave LP as the Network.

Of course, fans didn’t need confirmation that FHT were Green Day. Besides the obvious vocal comparison, there are lyrical references to American Idiot: On FHT’s “The Pedestrian,” Armstrong sings, “It don’t take a genius to be an idiot.” And sleuths noticed that the goat logo on Foxboro Hot Tubs’ MySpace page is identical to the one that appeared on the Network’s Website.

But unlike the Network, Foxboro have two songs catching on at rock radio. The rollicking rave-up “Mother Mary” reached Number Sixteen on the Modern Rock chart in February, and “The Pedestrian” is starting to get spins too. “The songs stand alone regardless of any Green Day association,” says Aaron Axelsen, music director at San Francisco’s Live 105. “I’d probably play these songs if they were a new band.”

But the disc poses a dilemma for retailers: How do you sell a CD by rock superstars when their name isn’t on it? “We’re not gonna put it under ‘Green Day,’ we’re gonna put it under ‘Foxboro Hot Tubs,’” says Andrew Gyger of Virgin Megastores. “But it’s enough of a high-profile project that people know about it.” As for the possibility of an FHT tour, the band remains coy: “Maybe, for sure!”

So, they say they consider it to be greenday but it's still confusing.

That's just, like, hyperbole. It's only Green Day in that it's them plus the Jasons.

It's all kinda confusing, but since it still is the band, and they're considering it their next album, I guess it could be.

I still want to hear Cigarettes and Valentines (I think that's what it was called).
