Do you happen to have a link to this new TV spot? I personally haven't seen it, but I keep hearing about it.
Eh, it doesn't give away TOO much, it's a brief shot that isn't very clear. There's some other shots of the monster in the movie that are a lot better than that. If that was the first commercial for the movie, I'd probably still want to see it just to get a better look.
First of all, awesome movie. I really enjoyed the acting and the main theme. What I didn't like was the monster, it's absolutely ridiculous such a creature would live in the ocean, it just doesn't add-up. It wouldn't need legs like that, it wouldn't be able to walk so easily, even if it was amphibious and why would it have lungs if it lived on the bottom of the ocean anyway? I believe in giant squid but this I just can't believe in any way. I mean the movie is based on the group of people but you can deny the monster plays a huge part in that, if they wanted to make a movie just about the group of people they shouldn't have shown the monster so early on. That ruined a lot of the tension for me too. Thought the subway scene was way too long too. Also the proportions of the monster are wrong throughout the movie, one scene it's as big as a building and pushes it to the side and in another it's only five times as tall as a grown man... Then there are the tiny monsters, they looked a lot like smaller versions of the big one so maybe they're babies and she (presuming it's the mom) lays them on land to feed, that would seem logical to me, but it isn't realistic at all. Even though, I enjoyed the movie, I didn't like the combination of a big monster movie and a realistic portrayal of what people do in a catastrophe.
I heard a rumour that there will be a sequel but it'll be like a normal film and that it'll be from the army's point of view or something? That'd be interesting to see.
No one ever said it lived at the bottom of the ocean, only that it was sleeping at the bottom of the ocean. Like in some sort of deep hibernation. To each their own, I guess. To me it felt like WAY too long before the monster was revealed. If you're talking about the last scene where Hud is killed, I've argued this on unfiction and basically there's no basis as to seeing how tall the monster really is in that scene. Really, all you have to reference the monster to is the sky. Due to perspective the monster looks smaller than it really is, but if you look straight up at the sky and there's an object there, you can make that mistake too. JJ Abrams and Reeves have been confirmed as saying the tiny monsters are lice. There is a quote of Abrams saying that the monster used a building to scratch its back and the creatures fell off.
About living in the ocean, it's just not logical to be build like that and live in the ocean. There are basic rules that in (marine) biology and they're just not followed. It seems absurd to me. Same goes for the parasite, I understand they're parasite but parasite don't have a long lifespand, they wouldn't be able to survive on land and breath air. I just think the monster looks terrible and it doesn't follow any of the basic rules in nature... it's ridiculous. About the perspective, ever stood at the bottom of a really tall building? Doesn't it seem higher when you are closer to it. That's what perspective does, if you are near something tall it looks even larger than when you are far away. You can easily compare it's claws which are on the ground to the size of the head of the Statue of Liberty. You can also compare the head to Hud, let's say Huds a tall guy, he isn't as tall as two story building. It just wasn't correct and you could easily tell...
To be fair, he was holding a camera which was zoomed in at the time he first saw MGP, and then he zoomed in even more to get a better look at its face, since he probably figured he was a dead man anyway. Edit: I'd also like to point out that Abrams and Reeves haven't ruled out the fact that the monster is, in fact, an alien. They've just said it's been living at the bottom of the ocean, they never said it's not an alien. So that could be why it looks so vastly different from other marine creatures. And to be fair again, there are lots of undiscovered species of animal at the bottom of the ocean we've never seen before.
I said it once and I'll say it again, nobody ever said it LIVED in the ocean. Only that it was sleeping/in hibernation in the ocean. Nobody ever said anything about it living in the ocean. It could have come from anywhere, all that matters is that it was in hibernation in the ocean, not that it lived there.
