I see it was closed cause people started asking for invites to torrent sites, etc. I'd just like to know out of curiosity why this stance came about? Because as far as I can fathom linking to torrent sites and the like goes on all over the internet, including forums and LPA can't really be held accountable for anything just because someone posted a link to Pirate Bay or Demonoid. Of course, its only as far as I can fathom. I'm not well versed it the legality of it all or history the site has had with the law. Just wondering, is all.
Possibly something about being a middleman in a possibly illegal transaction [depending on how you look at it].
Should there ever come a time where some federal agent was trolling around the LPA in his off-time, he could see someone linking to that site, and then... well, you know, screw that person over big time, based on the assumption that the person linking to that site actually uses that site to download illegal material.
Exactly. Will nailed it down to the tee. We do this to prevent us (and our users) from any legal liability.
Whenever this discussion comes up on forums I tend to point out that torrent sites in themselves are not illegal. I can be a member of demonoid, I could invite someone on this site to demonoid. That isn't illegal one bit. If however one of us decides to download copyrighted material from demonoid, well than that's when it becomes illegal. That said, those who take their time, effort and money to run this site should be able to do whatever they like with it, and so i'll support the decisions they make.
As true as it is, don't bother arguing with that point unless you can explain why Canadians no longer have access to Demonoid. I mean, Demonoid hosts legal content -- why am I blocked from it? A site can be 99% legal and 1% illegal -- that 1% is easily turned into 100% while the 99% legality of the site is totally ignored.
