Every band kind of goes through that stage, but what they're going to realize real quickly is that if they don't have radio play or TV play, their CD isn't really going to go anywhere.

I mean say it all you want but, we might not even be looking at The Linkin Park Association right now had Linkin Park never made a PG rated music video or did whatever they could to get on the radio. It is thanks to the fact LP were whored on the airwaves that Linkin Park are where they are today.

Sooner or later Julien-K may realize the same thing.

I don't know. They have a pretty large fan base without having a single CD out and when I met them, Ryan said that he doesn't want people to notice them by hearing their songs over and over on the radio.

Maybe that means once the CD is out, they'll be on the radio but it doesn't seem like something they'd want. After being in Orgy, I'm sure he knows what the radio exposure does and what happens once you're in the mainstream.

Definitely. Being mainstream can either make or kill a band. I know a lot of people turned on Metallica at first when their video went on MTV.

...but then again Metallica are the epitome of sellouts so what am I talking about.

 Did you hear that they wanted to sue the company that makes Guitar Hero because they're using "one", even though they got all the rights to use it?

I laughed when I read that.

It's riculous that people would turn on a band because they went mainstream. People want their band to be successful and therefor must promote themselves as much as they can. They wouldn't be in a serious band if they were getting paid fuck all for doing it.

To be honest, the term sellout is way overused and it's a really ugly term. I'd only use the word sellout for someone like 50 Cent who's ambition for money and fame has seen him put his face and music out everywhere including starring in his own video game. Metallica didn't sell out, they just became hugely successful by being very talented musicians and producing some top-notch music.

EDIT: If Metallica were such big sellouts, then why would they prevent Itunes from putting their music on the itunes store?

And suing companies for using their songs because they want all the profit.

EDIT: And to answer your question about iTunes...they probably weren't getting enough money from iTunes.

Let's be honest here. When it comes to iTunes, artists get the SHAFT in terms of money.

If they want a gold or platinum album, I think catering to radio or MTV would be good, but they don't need to. Hard touring and a strong fan-base can sustain a band for a long time. Look at bands like Converge, Zao, or any other countless bands who have survived for the better part of a decade without radio or MTV play. Especially these days of dwindling CD sales, MTV and radio are far less important. The internet (which is where most people learn about music anyway) is the real key to promotion.

When it comes to the music business PERIOD, the artists are the ones that get the shaft.

Anyway, since the video has been removed from Youtube, not much point in keeping this thread open. Knowing Julien-K, they'll have it up on their website sooner or later, when/if it is, I'll reopen this. *closed*
