It's natural for people to "label" stuff, whether it's music or people. Like, for example, you see someone walking down the street, and perhaps you decide to look at this person with interest, of course you label the person in some way? In my opinion, labeling is natural, and everyone have a right to have an opinion. Anyway, MCR? Emo? No, I'd say they're a band who make music, but maybe that's just me.
I definitely agree. I just meant, bands like LP and MCR caught their break largely due to the Nu Metal and Emo trends respectively. There are tonnes of bands with musical credibility that never get 1/100 of the sales LP or MCR have. Bands in general need some kind of break, and I think the explosive popularity of these genres did that for them.
People keep saying they were emo pre-Black Parade, and honestly, I just don't see that either. They had way more in common with the Misfits then they did with Sunny Day Real Estate. Once again, all of this bullshit is perpetuated by these journalists who are so-called "experts." I read a review for one of the PR shows where (I shit you not) the reviewer said something along the lines of "this tour makes a lot of sense since LP helped pioneer emo." My fucking head almost exploded when I read that. So how can a bunch of people who don't even know what emo is, have the nerve to label a band like MCR? I'll quote the late-great Ray Charles for some perspective:"There's only two kinds of music. Good music... and bad music." Amen to that shit.
I hate the Term Emo because now-a-days it is so overused that every band that has some screaming and melodic lyrics can fit right into the Term "Emo" i know adults who have never heard of Emo but instead call bands what many would call emo , "Gothic". Now i think most people that Call these bands Emo only do so because they Don't like them or could care less for taking the time to listen to their material to actually Categories them correctly For MCR i would not call them Emo. Just because their artwork has Skulls and Horror things, it would fit RIGHT in with what Derek had said. I guess where i live, Calling a band Emo now..is trying to be a insult, out of all my friends and people i know. hardly any go yeah i listen to Emo music. No they say stuff like "Yeah i listen to <insert band here>. Because every band is different. and me personally i can listen to Techno one minute then switch to Killswitch Engage, then go to taking back sunday, then listen to Linkin Park
I think I said in the P!ATD thread that emo is just this moment's nu-metal, or post-grunge, or britpop, or whatever. Somewhere along the line people just started to use it as a term for whatever's popular in alternative rock right now, but it's too broad to define a particular style of music. I mean, MCR sound nothing like TBS, just like Lostprophets sound(ed) nothing like Korn, and just like Suede sounded nothing like Oasis. And before anyone challenges me I used the popular definitions of those genres in choosing the bands I mentioned in the last sentence... yes I am aware of emo's origins, but I prefer to define those bands other ways. It was a derogatory term even back then, anyway. If you want to use actual genres MCR are just alternative rock/pop-punk. That's all.
QFT Darin Malakian from SOAD said "They used to call us nu-metal. Now they call us prog-rock. I guess they just call us whatever's popular." As soon as the emo trend dies down, they'll find something new to call everybody.
Since we can't call them horrorcore apparently (despite Gerard admitting their sound was influenced by horror flicks AND NOT emo) I propose the following genre: Horrorpunk. Thank you.
The Misfits have been called horror-punk as well (among other things). Seeing as MCR was influenced by them, I think it's fitting. It's almost impossible to name a new genre of music that hasn't been used before. Unless you get really creative like sasscore, dildocore, or rodeo-punk (btw someone else thought of these names not me).
Sunny Day Real Estate = emo The Misfits = horror punk My Chemical Romance = not either, they are rock
Their look and some of their songs on the first album had a definite Misfits influence. As well as Ink & Dagger.
Just because maybe they're influenced by The Misfits it certainly doesn't mean they should be placed in the same genre as them. The two bands are very different in every way to be honest. One thing is for sure though, MCR are not Horror Punk.
I never said they were. I was just saying that at one point in time, that would have been an accurate description. They were obviously influenced by them, though. Don't even get me started on the whole punk rock debate. That shit would go on for like ten pages.
