My first question :

Why is something useless and expensive called a "white elephant"?

OK Here is the answer for my question :

The term "white elephant" comes from ancient Siam, where no one but the king could own a rare and sacred albino, or white, elephant without royal consent. The cost of keeping any elephant, white or otherwise, was tremendous, and so when the king found displeasure with someone he would make him a gift of a white elephant, and because the animal was sacred and couldn't be put to work, the cost of its upkeep would ruin its new owner.

So the next question :
Where did the word "assassin" come from?

It came from a guy named Hassan who founded a religious order in the XIth century. His followers were drugged fighters and were called haschaschins because they ate hascisch. After that it became assassin.

Why can Edward Eleric (from the anime series Full Metal Alchemist) perform alchemy without drawing a transmutation circle?

 

I don't even need to look at Wiki for this one. I've read too much FMA.

When Ed claps his hands together, his body basically BECOMES the transmutation circle.

Well your answer is sorta right but not fully correct.

In reality though, that's a question of HOW he can do it and not WHY. The Gate gave him the knowledge of alchemy which of course showed him how to transmutate without the circle, but my answer was the WHY, as in the technique and such.

If I don't make sense, it's cause I'm tired.

That reminds me of a Star Trek conversation I once had with a friend:
