Thats funny....my Mac is connected to a wireless access point right now, and look, I'm making a post while connected to said access point!

You're talking about Windows, right? My (Windows) laptop is currently having troubles staying connected to a ~90% strength signal, and I've never seen a Mac have troubles with that (I've never heard of my friend, who is a owner of a 15" Macbook Pro, bitch about it as much as I do).

Anyone remember my accident while I was on OSX86? I accidentally opened everything in the Apps folder (I think that was about 50 apps?, including folders opening). Slow down for about 3-5 minutes, nothing crashed (with the exception of some applications I was earlier having problems with due to X86-ness...but that honestly doesn't count, a real Mac would produce even better results). Windows loves to crash with only a few applications opening. ;)

He never said you couldn't do it. He said it wasn't a good access point.

And as for Macs being stable -- I've seen far more Mac crashes since OSX than I've seen Windows crashes since XP and Vista.

Seems like it's always inevitable that whenever a pro-Windows topic is made, Mac fans always find a way to bring it upon themselves to say how much better Macs are. There's nothing wrong with Macs. They're great little machines. But to imply they're better than Windows computers is just a matter of opinion. And them being "more stable" isn't what it's cracked up to be.

People always whine about Windows always copying Macs, too, and that is also untrue. I know no one's said it yet, but I'm just trying to avoid having that discussion. Both companies have copied each other. It's nothing new. To imply one's done it more is pure speculation, as many key items have been stolen by both parties.

Yay for basically just admitting to the world you committed piracy.

I've seen far more Windows computers infected with horrible virus', spyware and adware.

Last I remember, there's only 1-2 virus' for OSX, and those still require user-interaction to all the install, I think.

You're trying to avoid the copying discussion, yet you start it. *shakes head* Windows tried to copy OSX's install security with UAC and HORRIBLY failed. In my opinion, Windows' UAC is the most pointless feature of Windows. All it is is just and extra click, and possibly a user/pass if you're on a lower account (don't know for sure). I like how OSX does it so much more where it requires an user/pass when installing something advanced (I don't know what exactly triggers it, but I've noticed it's not for simple things, like what happens in Windows). It's impossible not to copy a feature from a competitor because if your users want something that's in a competitor's product, you can't just say "no, we're not going to implement that, as we'd be copying our competitor, so fuck you, take your business elsewhere!", you just have to copy and trying to make it better than your competitor, of course, when it gets to the making it better part, that's where Windows falls short *winces at UAC and Aero*.

For all you know, he could be a MSDN subscriber, a beta tester who got a key for testing (but decided to wait till Retail due to much better driver and program support), or he got an key from whatever institution he goes to so he had to download it online. Yay for not considering all the possibilities and immediately assuming the worst because of today's stereotype that everyone is a pirate if you download, just because that's what you hear most!

And here we go again... another thread on the internet about Windows turning into a Mac-Windows debate.

Mac OSX only has "1-2 [viruses]"? Are you seriously that naive? The Mac operating system isn't as vulnerable to viruses, but it has tons of security exploits which make it far easier to take control of someone else's Mac. Security exploits come out practically every day for the Mac.

I tried to avoid the copyright discussion by stating that both sides have copied each other. That's why I brought it up, because I knew it would be a tiff that either you or another Apple fan brought up eventually, and I wanted to make concessions by stating that both sides have stolen from each other quite a bit. Obviously you wanted none of it (well, you wanted to say that each had the right to steal from each other, then you tried to sneak in your opinion about how Apple's products are always better by trying to pass it off as fact).

The "File, Edit, View, Help" menu was first created by who? Certainly not Apple! What about FrontRow? Apple loves touting that and saying Windows has nothing like it, but MediaCenter was out long before it. How about the OSX Tiger "Spotlight" feature? Let's take a more in-depth look at that, shall we?
Apple has stolen just as many features from Microsoft, wether you like it or not. UAC is not an attempt to copy anything that Apple has done, and to say as much is really trying to stretch the truth. UAC is nothing like Apple's "security" features. Furthermore, you've been able to do the same thing in Windows for a while now. It's called setting up an administrator account and having other accounts that don't have access to all those features.

As for your "better" part -- that's simply a riot. So I suppose iWork is "better" than Office, right? iWork is quite possible the worst software suite ever released by a major publisher. It's a disgrace to Apple's name, because normally they release good products.

And what about the years and years of Apple proclaiming that their processors were umpteen times more powerful than Intel processors, only to recently switch to Intel because they consider them faster? If that's not hypocritical, then I don't know what is. How about the upgrades of OSX (Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger) each costing $129 to upgrade to? And Apple says Microsoft's pricing system is insane!

Both operating systems have their advantages and flaws. I don't know why Apple fans even try to refute that claim. Obviously it's an opinion, but come on -- you mean to tell me that Windows is a horrible operating system in comparison to everything else available? That's a riot. Of course there are going to be problems -- it's on so many damn machines that it's going to happen. Macs have just as many problems, but no one ever wants to fess up to their crashes and security exploits.

I work at a college helpdesk, and we support both Windows and Macs...

Typical Windows calls: "HELP!!! My computer crashed!", "McAfee says I have a virus!!!", "NOTHING'S WORKING OMG HELP!!!", "My computer was blocked from the network for not having any security updates installed, help!", "Spyware is popping up porn sites constantly!"

Typical Mac calls: "How do I do ______?"

We put tickets in for technicians to go out and take a look at Windows computers on a daily basis because it's a problem so bad that we can't fix it over the phone or through remote desktop. In my 6 months working there, I have only had to send a tech out for a Mac twice...once, the hard drive in a professor's G5 took a crap, and the other time, a professor had his MBP rebuilt with a campus standard install of OSX and whoever built it forgot to install something so they had to go out there to install it. The hard drive one, maybe you could argue it's Apple's fault, but not really since Apple doesn't make the drives. The second one was an error on IT's part.

Todd, with all due respect, your personal experiences don't tell me anything.

Did you ever think that a larger percentage of computer users use a Windows-based operating system, and with that you'll also get more computer-illiterate types? Windows is the universal operating system. What I mean by that is that everyone from advanced users to grandparents who have never used a computer before will use it. It comes from being the market leader. People are just going to stick you with Windows and assume you'll know what to do.

People rarely go with Macintosh computers as their first computer (as in, the first computer they've ever bought). They're going to go with the framiliar name, and what they've seen. Plus, if they go into their local store, chances are they're not going to see a Mac sitting around.

I've done numerous IT jobs, and I've seen Macs crash just as much as Windows. I've also seen far more security exploits on Macs, and I've seen far more viruses and trojans on Windows. What does that mean? That both operating systems have their weaknesses. It's not exactly a surprise.

And what makes you think yours tell me anything

As far as people rarely going with a Mac as their first computer, got any proof to back that up? I know more often than not, people go with Windows first, but you act as if it never happens.

Todd, don't be a smartass -- you knew damn well what I was doing. I said your experiences don't tell me anything. And I don't expect my experiences to tell you anything, either, I was merely showing that we obviously have different situations, so you can't simply rely on your own work as a college technology helper (I have no clue what your actual title is, so forgive me -- not trying to take anything away from your job) is indicative of everywhere. If you have personal experiences and want to rely on them, why wouldn't I respond with similar experiences?

And I never said it "never happens," so please don't put words in my mouth. Windows-based PCs make up over 90% of the market share for computers, however, and I highly doubt first-time users are going to change in statistics for sales, either. No, I do not have any "proof to back that up" because there simply can't be that sort of proof. You would have to survey every single first-time computer buyer out there, and that simply isn't realistic.

I'm not even sure what we're talking about anymore. You used to be trying to make the argument about how horrible Vista is and how much better Macs are, then someone else brought up the lack of viruses on Macs and wanted to imply that Macs are "better" (which is all relative), then you implied that Windows break down more frequently.

So, I ask: got any proof to back that up?

That's not much credibility. College helpdesks will employ anyone in any technology classes.

Both OSs have their flaws, the problem being, Mac users believe their OS to be completely flawless and are usually undereducated about the issues with OSX. OSX crashes as much as Windows. OSX flaws are getting up there. Applescript can screw over a lot of things. If you're going to come into a Vista thread and tell us your OSX is flawless and the newly released completely recoded Windows OS crashes, you have no idea what you're talking about. I was a systems administrator for a medium sized hosting company. Ive seen the goods and bads of both and OSX isn't nearly 'flawless'. Neither is Windows. But at least I'll say that instead of saying something like: Windows has never crashed but OSX crashes all the time, I think Ill stick to my Windows because OSX is a piece of crap. Talk about biased huh?

Maybe the colleges you go to does, but mine has much higher standards for their IT employees.

Since it seems like people can't refrain from personal attacks, I'm locking this.

Although this thread is closed, please allow me to throw in my two cents and educate a few people:

Help Desks will not hire just anyone. With the Help Desk job at Penske that I've failed in getting a position for, unless you have an Associate Degree for Computer Technolgy/Sciences, as well as several years of computer knowledge you are NOT going to be able to work there.

Same applies for most colleges, if professors need a computer fixed ASAP they aren't going to want to speak to some kid who never fixed a computer in his life and just applied because he needed the money. No they are going to look for someone with genuine computer experience and knowledge.

Todd knows way more about computers than anyone else in this thread because he's dealt with technology for many years. In fact, he is the technical guru that we go to whenever LPA fries because he's the only one who knows enough to fix any problem that presents itself. He even hand coded many of the awesome features you see here. Yup, we are not using pre-installed scripts on LPA's webpage, most are custom built by none other than Todd himself.

And for the record: I used an ancient mac computer that was monochromatic display, and it still worked better than any Windows based PC ever did. Plain and simple, MACs are more stable and that's why you see several Apple innovations within Windows Vista. Coincidence? Hardly.
