I am thinking of buying my friends computer. It has 200GB, 1GB RAM, and it comes with a monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, all for 700$ CDN. I am still going to try it before I buy it for sure, but are there any other questions I should ask him? And is it a good deal?

What kind of processor does it have, and (just as important): the video card/card type (AGP or PCI Express)?

That'll make a huge difference, especially as far as future upgrades go - if you're gonna play games, you'll want PCIe...

Same as Joe, and also try to get the motherboard make and model, if possible.

I strongly recommend getting a new computer, esp. considering the price you're willing to pay, for the warranty if nothing else.

Why, whats wrong with this one?

The only other information I have on this right now is that it is an e-machine computer.

Spend $200-$300 extra and get a laptop. ;)

If you're willing to spend $700 on a used computer, you shouldn't have any qualms about springing for a new, better machine for a few hundred extra dollars.

From the sounds of it, he's asking way too much.

Ok, so of the computers you've posted...

    #1: Not too bad
#2: Shared memory: run for the hills. That'll suck performance so fast it'll make your head spin. And the fact that they've done it with only 512MB of RAM makes me laugh.
#3: Probably the best out of the ones you've posted, but make sure it's got a PCIe slot open. The problem of shared memory comes up here though - remember, you technically don't have a dedicated video card with this, and it's just using your regular RAM as graphics memory. If it has a PCIe slot open, you can buy a card, pop it in and use it, but that'll be an extra 400 bucks or so.
#4: Refurbished. Run for the hills.

So the moral of the story is...shared memory was invented by Satan himself.

I'd run from anything Best Buy sells and build it myself.

Depends what you're using it for. I built mine specifically for Microsoft Flight Simulator X, which is actually hosing it more than I thought it was - and I went all out on this one. With a refurb, you usually don't get anything top-of-the-line, and since that's what I look for, that's why I personally stay away from them.

Plus the whole warranty issue can come into play here.

Ok, I saw this incredible deal, but my dad wouldnt let me buy it because it was refurbished. It had 1GB RAM, 250GB HD, DVD RW/Lightscribe and a whole bunch of memory card slots, and it was only $500.00 CDN, I was pretty pissed that I couldnt get it.

That's not saying much. Just because it has 1GB of RAM and a 250GB HDD, it could still be a shitty computer. For example: I have 1GB of RAM and 400GB (320+60) of space, yet my computer isn't that incredible - the gfx card (radeon 8500) is shit, and the processor (amd athlon 64 3400+ s939) is decent for the present day market. $800.

    Athlon 64 FX-57 ftw.

p.s. Don't get anything Celeron. Avoid it like the plague.

I'm an AMD guy, but I've heard the Core processors from Intel are kicking some serious ass. AMD supposedly has a quad core processor in the works though ^_^
