Well, could the problem be that the PC is about 5-7 years old?

I pour about a thousand bucks a year into mine keeping it up to date...although lately it seems that 1000 bucks might be better spent elsewhere

I should get a new one. But instead of doing that, I can just nick my brother's. But nicking his PC without him noticing will be quite hard.
