You can probably forget about buying RAM...Dell builds their systems so that the only upgrades you can ever get are from Dell. It'll be wonderfully expensive, or nonexistent. And it won't work.

Can you tell that I hate dell?

Did you even read what he said? He said yes, you can add more, but the RAM your Dell takes isn't standard. It's a specially made for Dell, meaning a) it's going to be extremely expensive, since Dell can set their own prices; no competitors, or b) it doesn't exist; because in reality, yes, Dell does love screwing customers over, it's a proven fact.

There's two types of RAM, SDR and DDR. SDR is the old type, and DDR is the new standard. Now there's a third one that they don't make anymore, which Dell used to use called RDRam. If you have RDram, that could be bad because it's SO expensive because nobody makes it anymore.

I'm going to need you to download this and run it, its a program called 'CPU-Z' and its used for checking all kinds of system specs, and it's completely safe. You don't even install it, you unzip it and its a standalone program. You can delete it when you finish this if you wish.

    http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-138.zip

Run that, goto the memory tab and it will tell you what kind of RAM you have. You can tell your buddy and post here or whatever.

    ;)

    Ooh, lucky lucky. :)

Does the system recognize the additional RAM when it POSTs (at the beginning you'll see how it adds up the RAM..)?

I know you solved your problem already, but I would just like to point some things out.

    1) There are two types of RAM now. DDR and DDR2. If you have recently bought a computer, it is MOST likely to be DDR2, unless it was an older model.

    2) Dell computers aren't ONLY compatible with Dell RAM. RAM will work, according to what your motherboard needs. Some motherboards need DDR, some [newer ones], use DDR2, because DDR2 is faster.
