Great fucking album. Seems like a swing and a miss for most people, but this is exactly what I wanted from BMTH.

I'm a very recent fan of Bring Me The Horizon. I can't for the life of me stand their earlier "death metal" sound, but Sempiternal is a mind-blowing and impressive album. Nearly every song on the album is incredible and the coherent themes are very powerful.

That's The Spirit is incredibly disappointing because of this. I was hyped from Sempiternal but all I found in this new album is a safe and uninspiring performance. I understand the band's desire to explore new uncharted waters and how they don't want to be screaming for the rest of their lives but this was a disappointing experience all around. It feels like Meteora syndrome in 2015. Poor cliched lyrics, nearly identical sounding songs, and nothing truly groundbreaking for their career. Where's this album's passion seen in Empire, And The Snakes Start To Sing, or Hospital For Souls? Nowhere to be found it seems.

Doomed and Throne are pretty awesome at the moment, but I predict they'll carry a very short life expectancy due to the lack of any real depth. The rest of the album? Meh.

I'm loving Avalanche right now. I predicted it'd be one of my favorites and it certainly is. The vocal performance is solid, good lyrics, and it has a certain passion that you could say is missing from songs like True Friends.

Just listened to the full thing.
I guess I have my first impressions in.

Doomed - This song really sets the album up nicely, especially with how epic and big it comes off. Its like Linkin Park added their flare to Sempiternal. Only thing I'd want different is the removal of those weird breathing noises. I thought they were putting porn sounds back in their music again. 9/10

Happy Song - I was not impressed when this first released. Since then, its grown on me, but its still not up there, it seems lacking in some manner, I think it may just need to be faster. One major plus, the bridge towards the end is absolutely boss, but that's all. 6.5/10

Throne - After my disappointment with Happy Song, this just shot goosebumps my way. I know some people may think its too simple, but the sound is HUGE. If its not broken, don't fix it. This song was/is fucking beast filled, so much energy and its clear that this has caught many people's attentions. I think Throne is gonna be their go to track for fans. 10/10

True Friends - Similarly to Happy Song, my first impression on this song was meh. This, however, has grown on me much more than Happy Song. I will say the lyrics are absolute crap, but the overall sound is okay. Oli's screams are on point, and the violins/synths make it up for me. Just wish it wasn't so redundant. Needs something unexpected. 7/10

Follow You - I REALLY hate that annoying synth being repeated throughout the entire song. It kills the song's vibe so much. Apart from that, the chorus is nice, catchy, but the verses are a bit too simplistic. Even the love theme is very much bearable. This is the first song off the album that makes me think, "wait, that's BMTH?....". Not much else that comes to mind. 6/10

What You Need - Didn't expect this after hearing the snippet. I actually really do enjoy this song. It feels like Dead By Sunrise met The Hunting Party. Its so in your face, I can see this being big at concerts. "what do you know about circle pits?" Great harmonies here, and the mini guitar solo is unexpected. I can see this being on repeat for a while. Only downfall for me is the background vocoder vocals singing "you'll see what you believe", kind of annoying. 9/10

Avalanche - This song starts off big, which immediately catches my attention up until when it settles for the verses. The chorus is really catchy and brings back a big sound. I think the thing that really stands out here is the instrumental. Similarly to Rebellion, the vocals are a bit calming, but the instruments are, once again, HUGE. This is another one that feels big in a live environment. Kind of reminds me of Beta State's song, Change. 8/10

Run - I said previously that it sounded like Oli was singing over that one DBZ OST, I'm not changing what I said  This song is really awesome, its got atmospheric synths with a reminiscent feel to that of Sempiternal. Easily another song that will be on repeat. I think I'll be turning Super Saiyan now, haha. 8/10

Drown - Almost the same song, but its clear that the mix is greatly better, a couple extra synths too from what I can hear. Different vocal take too? Maybe. Idk, but whatever changes have been tossed in, this triumphs over the original track which was already nice to begin with. 8/10

Blasphemy - As soon as I finished listening to this, I knew that if the songs on this album had personalities, this would be the cool guy badass of the bunch. The guitar work is on point, and Oli sounds serious and in your face. Almost 80s rock like. Weird combo, but I see Batman walking down the street to this song, not giving a fuck  This song does no wrong with me at all. 10/10

Oh No - Not as bad a track as I had expected. Its up there for its Pop influences. It feels like Linkin Park's Iridescent met PVRIS + Imagine Dragons. easily the saxophone solo makes you go, "damn, that's nice af". I don't think this is album closer material, nor a stadium hit, but for radio play and just as a casual pop song to listen to. It works. 7/10

Overall, I think this album does plenty of good things, and plenty of bad. If you look at this album simply as Sempiternal's follow up, you'll probably be disappointed. This lack's Sempiternal's "fuck you I'm doing a bunch of epic shit on pretty much all of my songs and still keeping it fresh" vibes. It makes me think that Jordan had little influence on Sempiternal, introducing electronic elements to the band of course, but its clear that he's the one bringing all this pop influence big time, especially after admitting to listening to Justin Beiber  , whether you like it or not, its whatever. All I know is that this album will split the fanbase down the middle and we're gonna have another Linkin Park epidemic. On a final note, its interesting, but it doesn't really feel like this was a metal/rock band going towards pop, but rather a pop band trying to do rock. 88.5/110 or B-

Standouts - Doomed, Throne, What You Need, Avalanche, Run, Blasphemy
Low Points - Happy Song, True Friends, Follow You

It's not Sempiternal Pt.2 like I initially hoped, but it's fresh for the band. Would I have preferred Sempiternal Pt. 2? You bet your ass I would have, but this works.

Also highly disagree that the songs sound samey, I can't think of two songs on the album that really capture the same sound. Sure, that adds to a bit of disjointedness, but I've really been taking this album one song at a time rather than as an experience.

"Doomed" is a real strike of genius on this album. Miles ahead of any other song. It has an amazing cinematic quality, probably the best vocal performance on the album and the lyrics are actually good. Mixing is good aswell. Chorus is monsterous and it still isn't even the best part of the song.

Agreed highlight of the album for sure. After listening to the album a few more times I find it sad how the other best tracks were the ones they had already released beforehand. I never thought I'd consider Happy Song a strong point of the album, but it's definitely up there with Throne and Drown.

Here's my track by track review:

Doomed - This track is one of my favorite from the album. A nice mix of electronics and guitars. Oli delivers some soft, beautiful vocals in the verses, hard hitting vocals in the very powerful chorus, and I just love the way he says "doomed." I also love the line "I'm sorry it's too late, and it's not worth saving." My only complaint for this song is the weird breathing and "oh"s in the song. It just feels so out of place and brings the score down to a 9. 9/10

Happy Song - Why did they ever think bringing in little kids to chant "S-P-I-R-I-T" was a good? It sounds so out of place and terrible. The guitars are also pretty boring on this song with nothing special happening there until near the end. The only good thing about this song are Oli's soft vocals delivering some pretty good lyrics (I love the line "Don't wake us up, we'd rather keep dreaming") and the breakdown in the song. Other than that, a pretty meh song. 6/10

Throne - This song isn't really anything special. Sure I really enjoyed this song when it first came out, but it was never meant to have a long lifespan. Soon this song will become the next Can You Feel My Heart or Sleepwalking for me. 5/10

True Friends - Not an entirely bad song. Sure the lyrics are really shitty ("True friends stab you in the front"? Really?), but unlike a lot of you guys, I can actually enjoy Oli's performance. It doesn't come off that whiny to me. The verses are pretty solid, and the guitars aren't as boring as something you'll find on songs like Happy Song. But that pre-chorus is so out of place and awful. 6.5/10

Follow You - Yup, I see what you mean by how annoying that synth line is, Broman. Though to be fair, once Oli comes in, I'm able to just block it out (thankfully, cause it's bad). This song has a really nice atmosphere, and the guitars really contribute to that. Oli brings another beautiful performance to the song and really sells the whole "love song" thing. 7.5/10

What You Need - Not a bad song. Nice explosive song. Though I can't think for the life of me what that post-chorus reminds me of. But the line "You make me want to slit my wrists and play in my own blood" is laughably bad. I guess that mini guitar solo after it makes up for it. Overall, not a great song, but certainly not awful. 7/10

Avalanche - I love this song so much. I could listen to this song over and over and not get bored of it (can't say the same for a lot of these songs on this album). The lyrics are amazing, and Oli backs up those lyrics with an equally amazing performance with a special passion to it. My favorite lyrics would honestly be the entire chorus. 10/10

Run - This certainly a unique sounding song. The "oh"s and pounding drums really give it a special atmosphere, and the high pitched synth gives it this really frantic feeling tempo. And I haven't even gotten to the hard hitting chorus yet. 9/10

Drown - Oh thank god they reworked this song. While I love the song, my one major complaint in the past was how terrible it sounded and how muffled everything was. The mixing got a huge upgrade on this version of the song. 9/10

Blasphemy - This sounds so much different than I expected from the previews, which is pretty disappointing. Nevertheless, I still do enjoy this song. I love the sound of that guitar that follows each chorus. That solo is also pretty nice. A little out of place in the song, but I still like it. In the end, this song doesn't have really anything special to offer to grant it a rating higher than a 7. 7/10

Oh No - This is a pretty nice pop song that doesn't follow many cliches. For one, the lyrics discuss the topics of addiction instead going down the easy "love song" route. The saxophone solo was an... interesting choice. While it isn't too out of place on this song, it sure as hell is out of place on this album and think they should have done something else there. But other than that, the song sounds nice, and I love those "oh"s in the background. And no, this doesn't sound like One Direction. There are other pop bands out there that I'd make a connection to, but you people are only comparing this song to One Direction cause that's the first thing you think of when "pop" comes to mind. 8.5/10

    My overall rating: 7.5/10
Calculated overall rating: 7.68/10 (cause that .18 makes a difference)

Overall, this wasn't a bad album. I'm sure many older fans who listen to the band for their heavy metal sound and want to hear wailing guitars and screaming vocals are going to really hate it. But for me, I was introduced to this band through Sempiternal and I personally can not stand their older material. The major flaw of this album was that there too many songs that were just meh and lacked passion. On their next album, I want to hear Oli pour more passion in their songs like he did with Drown and Avalanche. I want to hear them step out of their boundaries more like what they did with Oh No and Doomed. And please, just get rid of all the safe songs like Throne and True Friends. While this album didn't blow me away, Bring Me The Horizon has still kept me as a fan.

I think Jordan sings the "doomed" part. Could be wrong, though.

Either way, it sounds really good. I don't really care who sings it.

I am on my second spin of the record and I`m really digging it.
I liked "Sempiternal" a lot. The older Material wasn`t as good, imo. I like the new, "poppier" direction.

Favourites so far: Throne, Run, Doomed, Oh No.

While this isn't as good as Sempiternal or Suicide Season this is actually a great cd. It shattered my expectations honestly. It feels weird that Drown is on the album, but aside from that I have no complaints. Drown isn't even a bad song either.

Best songs: Doomed, Throne, Avalanche, Run, Follow You, Blasphemy
    Worst Songs: True Friends, Drown

After first listen, one of my favorites of the year.

As someone who hasn't previously listened to BMTH, I did not have any expectations about the songs. I listened to the songs that were either posted or mentioned in this thread, not the whole album. I did like Throne and Drown (old version) somewhat though I can't see myself really getting into those songs or the other songs if the album is poppier than usual for the band. That said, I have heard of the band before and that they were "heavy." This seems to be the case, since several people here have mentioned they used to do metalcore. I will check out BMTH's older material and will probably end up liking it more lol

I'm really loving Oh No. This could be a hit on the charts if it was shortened and released as a single, along with a music video.

I do wonder if the band will continue in this direction with their music. Based on what I've heard so far, it's a little hard to believe that they used to make metalcore-style songs. This just goes to show that many bands change over time, some more than others.
