King's Den review of Hunting Party

Opening cut "Keys To The Kingdom" kicks off the record with the typical rap/rock foreplay that the band has been known for since "Hybrid Theory". The call and response vocals between Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington brings more of a familiar fire to the furnace while feeling fresh. Sonically this sounds like something that they would've done had they released their record in the early 1990's.

"All For Nothing" is the second cut and strap on your helmet for this one. Page Hamilton (of Helmet) is featured on this and Linkin Park has decided to use guest features for the first time on a record. Yet another track with the rap and rock intertwining, it's Linkin Park's famous formula with a new yet grittier sound to it.

"Guilty All The Same" lead single features Rakim. This track opens with a low fi intro and kicks off with punishing guitar riffs. The guitars silence when Chester melodically takes you down only to smack you in the face with a gritty chorus. Rakim spits "to me you're all the same you're guilty" after a loaded gun full of quoteable raps.

"The Summoning/War" are fourth and fifth on the CD. The first part starts with rapid fire drums and growls by Chester. This track is comes to a screeching halt (literally as it closes with what sounds like a car coming to a crash) as War begins with Mike Shinoda hauntingly singing about desolation over a jolting guitar riff.

"Wastelands (Of Today)" features more rapping. It seems like they have taken their old formula and blended it in with 80's/90's underground punk rock. John Lennon reference in Mike's verse was worth noting. Joe Hahn comes in during the break of the song.

"Until It's Gone" is Linkin Park in familiar territory. This track is a standout. Chester sings "you don't know what you've got, til its gone". This will go down as another classic amongst the singles in Linkin Park's catalog.

"Rebellion" kicks off with distorted electronics reminiscent of Neon Indian, with heavy bass and handclaps before it explodes into a fist pumping rapid song. Featuring Daron Malakian of System Of A Down. He does not sing on this one but his guitar work is very prominent. Chants of rebellion throughout the song.

"Mark The Graves" is very reminiscent of earlier Linkin Park, (see "No More Sorrow"). This track starts off with a long intro with military style drums and another rap verse by Mike. Mike boldly spits "yeah, you can bet it that the fight goes on". Mike sings at the tail end of the track, before Chester screams the same lyrics to close.

"Drawbar" features Tom Morello, and sounds very much like a Rage Against The Machine cut. Chester's low fi vocals almost sound like they are coming from a radio transmission.

"Final Masquerade" is the soft track of the album. Chester and Mike harmonize together, singing "it's not about how it ends, but where it goes". Also, a new voice is found at the end of this track. Is it a guest feature that wasn't credited or another band member?

"Line In The Sand" closes the album. Very electronic with bubbling synthesizers and digital bloops and bleeps shimmering throughout the song. Chester sings "what divided us in the first place, you changed yourself in the worst way". Another whole band moment as they come together with "oh's". Very 30 Seconds To Mars like song, and this track proves that Linkin Park always knows how to switch things up once you get comfortable with a certain vibe.

To say the least, this album will most likely be very popular. Living Things brought back their fan base which seemed to be crumbling after their 2007 and 2010 release. Get ready for this one. Listen to "Guilty All The Same" and "Until It's Gone" under Linkin Park's profile on our page.

Damn, glad to hear about Drawbar not being an instrumental, and Joe Hahn having a presence on Wastelands is promising. Also glad that there's at least one soft song on the album. Not sure how to feel about it sounding like a 90s punk rock album, but I'll wait to hear it to decide. Definitely the most interested I've been in an LP album for a while.

What? I had hoped that A Line In The Sand will be epic guitar ballad like TLTGYA, not electronic stuff. But it's nice to hear that there is some climate ballad on THP (Final Masquerade). And Mark The Graves as new No More Sorrow. I don't know if I want this was true or not.

Among their singles? Sure, if it gets proper promotion and a music video. But so far it doesn't seem that way.
It's not one of their best songs by any means, but then again, not many of their singles area. I would categorize Burn it Down a classic as well and I find that song extremely generic.

Well lyrics like this:

"it's not about how it ends, but where it goes".

"yeah, you can bet it that the fight goes on"

Sounds almost too LP-ish to be true
I am most excited for KTTK, Drawbar and A Line In The Sand at this moment - But i still bet this is fake.

It seems to me that the album may leak in one day after the Listening Party (as it was with Living Things) or the day after the release snippets of all the tracks (as it was with A Thousand Suns). IMO, it's very likely. If it is the first option, we will have the album in a week.

Anyone could write a "review" of the sampler based off Derek's write-up (among others), and no-one's heard the rest of the songs so as to challenge the validity of this review.
