Yeh, that's fair enough, mixing is definitely an issue of personal taste. One man's favourite mix is another man's mediocre/boring mix, and vice-versa. Manny Marroquin is a superb mixer, I'm just not so keen on his LIVING THINGS mix. Each to their own!

it's incredible how this thread reflects what i thought from the day LT is came out. I totally agree regard the worst mix of an LP's album. I compared it with HT and Meteora's mixes and they are so perfect, that was a really nice job...

LP let Rick Rubin touch the mix too much this time around. He has a tendency of brick walling anything he's involved with.

I think people are overreacting on the mixing. It's not the best, but it's still okay.

I don't know man, there were a lot of cool things that you can't really hear. Background sounds, backing vocals, guitars. IMO it was a real detriment to the album.

I don't think it sounds brickwalled at all. Actually I find the volume levels to be lower than a lot of other albums.

Also there's a lot of bass on the mix, as a bass player I really appreciate they paid more attention to the lower end of the mix, ATS mix was really lacking on the bass side IMO.

I think it could be down to the rushed schedule. Rubin is known for poor sound quality but MTM and ATS were fine.

Of course it's wise to be wary of Rick Rubin at times, however I could almost guarantee that Rick Rubin had absolutely no hand in the engineering side of the record at all. Rick Rubin would come in maybe once a week and act as an overall, executive producer, offering thoughts, advice and new directions to try. All engineering was handled by the band and Ethan Mates, with mixing handled by Manny Marroquin (and chances are, the mixing sessions were attended by Mike and Brad, not Rick Rubin).

I'm 100% certain in saying that, if there is an issue with LIVING THINGS sound, it has very little (if anything) to do with Rick Rubin.
