I disagree. A lot of their stuff, especially circa '03, was intentionally non-specific & vague to appeal to a larger number of people (*your life here* type stuff). It's hella relatable & might create the illusion of depth but they aren't really saying anything.

I find Mike & Chester to be very average lyricists overall, they have their moments here and there, but yeah....

If you want well written lyrics with depth, Maynard James Keenan is your guy. He just has a way with words, a wit and actual ideas in his lyrics that Mike & Chester have never come near.
James Hetfield, too, at his best far outstrips M&C.

How do you figure that? It sold a lot less than Hybrid Theory. Even people I've known who did love it liked HT substantially more.

This typically happens when you make a below par album.

I think it safe to say that most of us like Hybrid Theory better than Meteora, but when i say it gained more fans i mean like new fans, the same thing with m2m lp gained new fans, but started losing fans
also. Cause remember when Hybrid Theory came out not alot of people heard of linkin park.

It it wasn't for Numb, LP would not be as big as they are today, and you can't deny that

Sorry friend, but you're wrong. Hybrid Theory was a monster almost from the get-go, In The End was a massive single that got them the bulk of their fans at that point. I know a lot of much younger fans found Hybrid theory and Meteora around the same time in like, 05 and 06. Are you referring to that?

    Can and will.

Hybrid Theory was more successful but Numb was probably their most successful single (and probably still is)

No "In the End" propelled them to mainstream success. It peaked at #2 at the Billboard Hot 100. "Numb" and "What I've Done" are also massive worldwide hits, but not as big as "In the End".

Well if you want to get technical...What I've Done and New Divide are their two most successful singles. Of course, the Transformers franchise had a hand in sales, but that's besides the point.

I was actually thinking what I've Done and New Divide might have higher sales. I was pretty sure New Divide might have been higher but wasn't sure.

EDIT: just looked it up, highest selling:
    1. New Divide
    2. What I've Done
    3. Numb/Encore
    4. Numb
    5. Shadow of the Day

No shit. That's the point of a single. Doesn't make it a good song. St. Anger gained fans of Metallica but it wasn't a good song.

On that note, if it wasn't for In The End, LP wouldn't be as big as they are.

If it wasn't for Collision Course, LP wouldn't be as big as they are now.

If it wasn't for [insert song with radio airplay here], LP wouldn't be as big as they are now.

Sure the 'hardcore fans' didn't like ATS but they gained new fans they would've never gained with Hybrid Theory Part 3. It garnered good reception at ETS, and NIN fans are hard to please. People who wrote off LP as a corporate band (with good reason, too) were converted.

The way I see it, the fans LP lost with these last few albums weren't a big loss. Not to group you all together, but you can't deny that the great majority of 'old skool' LP fans are the ones that would actually spell it 'old skool'. Has the fanbase diminished? Possibly. Has the overall IQ of the fanbase increased? Hell the fuck yes.

It also helps that the people who left the fanbase are ones who aren't receptive to change. We're talking about people who are happy with Limp Bizkit. Treading on old paths like it's nobody's business.

There's a reason why that picture of an emo student at school saying his life sucks andhe's gonna go home and listen to LP was made. It was a valid stereotype. I'd liken it to the fans Radiohead lost after The Bends, starting with OK Computer and finalized with Kid A. Fans now of both bands are in general more open-minded and, to be frank, intelligent.

TL;DR hardcore fans of the old sound are MOSTLY less intelligent. New era LP have received better reception from the 'haters' of old and to those who like being challenged by new music instead of the same old same old. Or something. I'm typing on a phone at a bar in between shots so this may or may not be coherent.

I read the whole thing and I agree for the most part. I actually loved that they changed songs, I loved and still love MTM, and yes the IQ has gone up, but you can't deny the importance of their old albums and Numb was huge when it released. And as for you not liking the song (that's your opinion), because i personally love that song. I will admit single sales have become more prevalent these days and the highest selling singles from LP are mostly new songs, but Numb and Numb/Encore are two also. The new songs are just as important but before Transformers (what Iv'e Done and New Divide In sountracks), Numb and Numb/Encore were the highest selling LP singles, and you can't deny there importance either.

I hated Collision Course. The only decent song was the 99 Problems mash up with points of authority. Oh and Numb/Encore

So you're basically saying ATS fans are "superior" to HT/Meteora fans, and on different levels: better musical knowledge, more intelligent, more open-minded.....If other ATS fans think the same way, then obviously, they're also more arrogant. Because your post was very very arrogant/pretentious IMO.

Actually, there are other HT/Meteora fans who are actually very intelligent, know tons of music, and are open to accepting an opinion. Kinda sounds like the MTM/ATS fans too. I'm an ATS fan (and before that, a MTM fan) and I don't find myself any superior or inferior compared to other LP fans whatsoever; just equal and happy to share my love for Linkin Park with them. ATS fans aren't all art snobs. Heck, I consider it to be the best album ever, and I'm a guy who absolutely loves Theory of a Deadman's "Scars and Souvenirs", which is exactly the opposite of what ATS stands for.

The type of fans Minus is describing tend to be very vocal, very anger-filled, and very out there when it comes to defending HT/Meteora, so much that they actually bury the other HT/Meteora fans that are definitely not what he described. Trust me, there are tons of fans out there who can type really thought-out paragraphs and actually make a point, but sadly they are buried by the one guy who goes "LP MUST BE NU-METAL AGAIN, BRING BACK THE NU-METAL OR SUCK IT" and gets tons of likes on YouTube.

Plus, Minus DID say "MOSTLY less intelligent", so he's not writing off the smart fans of the old sound. And as for the arrogant part, well, he may be drunk at the time.
