I think LP realized they wanted to change their sound in the beginning of 2006 or mid 2006. They probably made songs after Meteora was released that sounded like the old LP. Qwerty is a perfect example of that. Rick told the band he didn't want to work with them if they wanted to make another album that sounded like their old albums. I think the band grew up with MTM and realized they wanted to evolve.

This interview from 2007 explains it completely.

So I understood the whole change in mindset with RR, but I also heard from somewhere that the band was not ultimately happy with the music they were making for Meteora. I guess I wasn't totally clear in saying "I wonder if the band had the feeling to change the music they made before RR was in the picture." Either way, i think it is fun to dissect songs and take a harder look at them. Derek saw me do that with "Wretches And Kings" and it made him appreciate it more. I had the wrong perspective on "The Little Things Give You Away" for years until Travz told me about it. This makes for good discussion. :)

Now you've got me all curious, Hybrid, what was your "Wretches And Kings" perspective? I always think it's interesting to read how somebody else hears or understands the meaning of lyrics, especially for a unique song like this.

Problem with this is your interpreting it in your one way and looking too deep. Then again you know you have a good band/song when even if its written about something completely different, but you can relate it to your situation and its good song writing. I do not think at all this was a "send off". HT and Meteora were both emotional albums dealing with more social issues. There IS a 4 year gap between Meteora and Minutes to Midnight they were obviously going to change. I don't think seeing some 30 year olds writing music about self abuse or hating parents would be a good thing

There were shades of it in 2004, when they were talking about Breaking the Habit and the way writing that song surprised them and inspired them. And in that year was when the side-project mania started to set in, as the band members felt that they were not able to get their artistic expression out in LP anymore.

Wow, this is a great topic.
Minutes to Midnight is my favorite album. I think it's because of its sound more than the band changing, because that alternative is just what I love to hear.
But, every Linkin Park song has its meaning.

Yeah it does but those meanings are personal cause you relate it to what you want. If I wanted to I could make a topic saying how I think this is a song about wanting to be your own person and not following guide lines of life someone has thrown at you. This topics the same thing, relating it to what you think it is. If you THINK this song is about them wanting to leave their sound then you're going to think that this was what the song was about. Which it isn't.

Just like other songs from Hybrid Theory and Meteora, Numb is a very personal song, and I don't think it was written for fans either.

I've been trying to find the Conversation about this...

I don't see interpreting anything as a problem. I enjoy dissecting the meanings of things.

    ^This is all true.
