As Hurricane Irene bears down the U.S North Eastern Coast it is predicted to hit the states of NYC, SC, NC, VA, PA, and NJ, with several states already declaring States of Emergency, they are preparing people to evacuate their homes and find safe areas. President Obama has declared NYC to be in a State of Emergency on a Federal Level, to 'alleviate the threat of a catastrophe in the counties of Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond, Nassau and Suffolk.' due to potential damage that could affect the islands' large tunnel and subway systems, effectively blocking transportation in and out of New York Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/26/nyc-hurricane-obama-decla_n_938516.html (live updates) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/26/hurricane-irene-us_n_937659.html ------------- Here in VA, the governor has also declared a State of Emergency.
Been watching this storm for a few days. All I can say is anyone who is living in any of these states, please be safe! I'd hate to see anyone get hurt or worse by the storm.
I'm going to New York for Vacation next week. I hope to God NY isn't hell when I get there, if my flight doesn't get cancelled. But most importantly I hope everyone stays safe! Though recently the projected path has it only as a tropical storm when it hits Long Island. At least there's that.
Yeah, I have an uncle and half brother who live in Virginia, so I hope they are safe during the storm.
Well I'm from NYC (the Bronx) and as of noon tomorrow all MTA/PATH/AMTRAK trains/buses will start to shut down. This includes all the major airports. I'll keep ya posted if anything. Its so bad that all zoos and aquariums will be shut down for he entire wknd as well as all Broadway shows. Most likely my job will be closed on Sunday since thy will be closing early at 2 pm tomorrow (I work at the hard rock cafe in times square). My parents were told to evacuate since thy live by the water front in Yonkers. So far my area has not been evacuated but things can change. Can't sleep b/c of this
I really wonder if this is going to turn out to be way blown out of proportion. The media likes to exaggerate things. None the less, if it isn't...I have my video camera ready to document the whole thing .
It's better for the media to blow it out of proportion than the media to think nothing of it when it actually could end up be a devastating storm. To me 24 hour news networks are a great thing to have when it comes to hurricanes. There's really no excuse for many lives to be lost.
Well, I personally think it is better to overestimate the danger and then still be safe than to underestimate the danger and risk your life, but that's just me. Ain't no overestimating a hurricane, boooi.
Wow Jesse, that was such a smart reply to Derek's post. I wish I would have been smart enough to make such a reply
I have to wonder if the media would be talking about this so much if it wasn't headed for New York. I don't even remember Katrina getting this much coverage until after it hit and completely destroyed New Orleans. It's like that with any story really, the national media has a strong bias towards anything New York because that's their home.
I remember watching the weather channel when Katrina hit massive coverage. I had directTV at the time and some channels were using a direct feed from local New Orleans news channels.
It did get coverage, but most came after it hit. There wasn't nearly the level of OMFGWTFPANDEMONIUM that has been going on with Irene, and I think had this amount of attention had come before Katrina hit, they might've been a lot more prepared or at least had evacuated sooner meaning less loss of life.
That was 6 years ago though. I think ever since then the media has covered hurricanes a lot more. Just earlier this year there was a potential threat with tropical storm Emily and it got some decent coverage despite it not being projected to hit NY. With that said I think this is getting special attention because of NY. There's no doubt about it. Though if you ask me it's justified. A hurricane in New York City could be a historic disaster.
Not to forget it's a potential for a historic disaster, only 2 weeks away from the anniversary of another historic disaster, that happened in the same city.
It would be beyond devastating if Ground Zero gets damaged. Let's hope the storm weakens enough before it hits NYC.
