Well I respect everything he has done including his contribution to music. However his music doesn't do anything for me personally. I mean it's catchy and alot of fun to listen to but other then that it doesn't hit home for me.

I was mostly responding to the people who hated him just based off of who the media painted him as, and who hadn't listened to his music at all.

It's fine to listen to his music and not like it, but to judge him based on false allegations is a little narrow-minded. So I wasn't really targeting you there .

Hmm, I find this interesting Derek, thanks for the enlightenment. The fact that he came up with many tunes himself does indeed make him better than 99% of pop stars.

I'm on Derek's side on this one.

Musically, I think he was a Genious.
He made pop into a whole new level. He mixed disco, funk, soul, and even rock in his early days (you know, off the wall, thriller etc). He revolutionized so many things in the 80's, and he was something unique at that time. He still is unique.
But for me, that's not my favorite Era for me. Personally, I find his post-thriller music amazing. His music was not only catchy and original still, but the emotion that were put into some of the songs is wicked. He kept inventing new melodies and different sounds. Like derek said above, he beatboxed a rough song and layered it. He was full of ideas.
Overall, if you look at pop today, so many artists copy his style. In the early 2000's, you could tell that artists were heavily influenced by him. The music, the dancing etc... Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake, Usher, and many other artists copy his dance moves. His music videos always keep getting replicated too.

I've been a fan of him since Middle school, and for some time, he was my favorite artist of all times. Overrated? No. Crazy? Maybe in some ways... but he was a good man. An amazing man to be honest.
    Legend? Yes.

Yeah, I'm totally one of those guys that believe he molested children, and that's pretty fucked up, but goddamn could he sing a tune and write a catchy song. I don't know what happen to Justin Timberlake, but he was the only one close to being a replacement for MJ for a little while there. I still think he could be, but I guess he's doing good with movies.

Justin Bieber is a good 2nd choice. We've talked about this in other threads. You might hate his style, or image, or whatever, but kid has swag and talent just spewing out of his (preteen) pores. If he's just a flash in the pan and isn't still relevant in the next 2 or 3 years, then I'll eat an entire pack of cigarettes. He'll be to my kids what MJ was to my parents.

(wouldn't be caught dead listening to MJ or Timberlake or the Beebs in public, though. How embarrassing.)

    haha nice.

I see your point there about the MJ/QJ partnership. But like everything, they needed time do their own thing. Kinda like the fallout the Beatles had with producer George Martin on ''Let it be". But in the end, they got back together like old times for "Abby Road" for their last album.

I do consider the HIStory and Blood On The Dance Floor era to be some of his most creative music of his lifetime though. Sure it didn't have the same infectious nature that his work with Quincy did, but the sound of the music and the texture of it was very creative. There's a reason why HIStory is considered such an underrated album, and that's because nobody ever gave it the chance it deserved after the allegations came out. In reality, it was one of his most intense and personal records he's ever made, and easily one of my favorites.

Probably THE most intense and personal record. He has never sworn that much in an album EVER. :awesome: and the topics of the songs tooo... damn.
Everyone should give that album a chance. It's not like "thriller", but it's special in a totally different way.

His new single isn't bad either. Even though the single is a remix and samples Billie Jean, I actually like this version the most:

Why can't people just let the dead be dead? I don't want to hear unfinished versions of songs. That's how 2Pac's legacy was raped.

I have to say I respect what MJ did for the music industry. Honestly though I haven't heard all of his music, mostly just singles. I always tell myself I'll one day take a listen to some of his albums but never get around to it.

Here's a little factoid I didn't know, Michael Jackson's "Invincible" was rated the best album of the decade (2000-2009) by Billboard magazine readers. It wasn't even an available choice, it won by manual entries.

Is it the best album of the decade? Being an MJ fan I can't say whether or not I agree...but it's definitely a great CD. A few of the songs were ahead of their time (they sound like music out on the radio today) and there's glimpses of his old style on there which was nice. I disagreed with the "rap" being on this album (low point) but ultimately it's a nice disc.

Just interesting to see the power he still has over the music industry.

I'm sure a lot of those people were sincere in their votes, but I wouldn't rule out posthumous bandwagon jumping as a reason for that honor, sadly.

    Agreed.

Here's another interesting fact, Invincible was the most expensive album of all time. It cost 30 million to produce, was recorded at over 20 different studios (rumored) and cost another 25 million to promote. Crazy.

I've been a fan of his for a while. I loved all his music. I do think he is a legend and will always be an inspiration to alot of artists and people. Not only was he a wonderful musician he was a great humanitarian. He always gave and was just a down to earth person. I never believed what the media has said about him. He will be missed and was a legend to many.

What? Was this album big when it came out? I was in only 4th grade and I remember a lottt of music from around that time (LPLPLPLP) but I dont remember his stuff.

Naah, definately not the best. The best would be Marshall Mathers LP imo.
If you say best pop album though, it would win big time.
