I've been really into Muse lately, and they have lots of cool bass lines so I'm suddenly more aware of bass lines in songs. In most LP music it seems pretty low in the mix, and mostly just seems to play the root notes of whatever power chord the guitar is playing. What do you guys think is the best bass work in a LP song, or of the bass in LP's music in general?
My favorite basslines are Easier to Run, Forgotten, and Wake. Go listen to Snax if you want Phoenix getting down on the bass.
Kind of off-topic, but is this actually Dave's vocals? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMMaZmf9864 Also the bass is awesome.
Yeah, I'd echo the sentiment of others here. You can hear Dave's best basslines on "Waiting for the End," "Wake," "Forgotten," and "Easier to Run." I would say you can hear him really well on "Given Up," but the bassline there isn't amazing. Unfortunately, if you're comparing any Linkin Park bassline to what you'll find with Chris' work in Muse, then you'll be sadly disappointed through and through. I mean, you will never hear a "Hysteria" or "Liquid State" kind of song in the Linkin Park discography - unless they choose to move in that direction.
If I recall correctly, Phoenix didn't play any bass whatsover on Hybrid Theory, so Forgotten doesn't really count. Some of my personal favorites (as simple as some of they may be), are Shadow of the Day, Waiting for the End, Burning in the Skies, and Mark the Graves. But, as minuteforce said, you're really never going to find impressive basswork in LP songs. Their music doesn't really call for the same kind of playing that Muse does. Now if you want some really cool bass playing, check out a group like Tool. Says the guy who posted a Muse video. Anyway, can somebody tell me why LP and so many modern rock bands bury the bass in the mix? It really ruins the overall experience on some of their heavier songs. Luckily LP got better with future releases(their worst example of this trend is with Meteora IMO) I wish they would separate guitar and bass a little bit more in terms of tone, effects, riffs/chord progression etc. THP tried to do that but I still feel like Phoenix/the bass didn't stand out as much as it should had.
Right, but the song existed well before Hybrid Theory came out as an album, and it didn't change that much in terms of the bassline.
I feel like Bass is buried most in some of THP songs, in general they lack a lot of low-end sound. Rebellion, War, Wastelands, and ALITS mostly. In Meteora the bass isn't prominent, but at least it's loud (if you understand what I mean).
I'd actually forgotten that Phoenix doesn't play on the "Forgotten" recording but, hey, he likely wrote it and he definitely does it live, so there's that. I've noticed this too. Once, I tried to make a playlist of rock songs and songs from that album sound like crap next to the other rock music I have.
Who cares who recorded it, didn't he play it on Rhinestone? Plus, the question was what are your favorite LP basslines, so there's a nitpick to answer your nitpick Gibs.
All I did was answer the question of the thread, and then suggest other good bass music. What am I nitpicking?
