Would they be where they are today without Don Gilmore?

    :D

But look, I'm not trying to shit on anyone's favorite album or make them feel bad for liking it. I know a lot of people have strong feelings for the first two albums and that's great. But a lot of fans who prefer the early stuff seem to give Don Gilmore a lot of undue credit for making their music rawk really hard, when in reality that's the opposite of what he was doing. My issue is with him. He is not the super great heavy rock producer that some people seem to think he is. His job was to make things shiny, not gritty.

Yeah, being forced to rewrite SIB for so many times would probably not be much fun. And yeah, Linkin Park could've done without the angsty boy band image, I'm sick of listening to people whine about that or make shitty jokes about that.

I've seen lots of dumb replies to opinions in debates on this forum over the past 13 years, but this is one of the dumbest I've ever seen. "Your opinion about music differs from mine, so you must not have very good ears." Shut up.

Don Gilmore produces for the radio, not for the band. I looked through his discography just now, and almost all the records he's produced have been a band's most commercially-successful albums, because he made them that way. He allowed for almost no experimentation and played right in to the desires of the record labels that had those bands under contract. He's also got this habit of making guitars on the albums he produces way, way too fucking loud, to the point where they just sound like walls of sound (I think Xero21 said that in their post), and he all but mixes out the bass on most of the records he produces.

I love Hybrid Theory (and to a far lesser extent, Meteora) because, for me, they're incredibly nostalgic albums and they're what got me into heavier music, but to say they're their best albums because of the production's just asinine. Gilmore dumbed those albums down so much that I'm surprised Linkin Park still plays some of those songs live (well, not really, they're still incredibly popular songs, but whatever, I'm being hyperbolic). Even though I still thoroughly enjoy those two albums far more than anything they've done since, Meteora's hands-down their worst album (lyrically, musically, whatever) and Hybrid Theory isn't really all that far off, if you take off the nostalgia headphones.

Sure, without Don Gilmore, maybe the band doesn't become as popular because their albums wouldn't have been so overproduced and radio-produced. But I still think they'd have become popular, it just would've taken them a little longer than what they'd experienced right off the bat. But Don Gilmore's a terrible producer, and you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who knows anything about music on a professional level to disagree with that sentiment. He's a producer for record labels, not for bands.

    1. "they're"
    2. HT and Meteora are their best albums you say? You're going to have a fuuuuuuuuun time on this forum. Prevailing opinion around these parts is that ATS is by far their best work, from the noobs to the vets who have been members of the forum for over a decade like myself.

Gilmore saw the talent they had, I guess he wanted to make them big. I don't think LP would have been where they are today without Gilmore.
Those catchy guitar riffs, chester's raw voice, mike's cool raps. The anger, the pain etc. Lot of people gonna relate to it. Young or old.

    LOL

    I'm sorry and I actually don't have a big ego but -
as long as you can't reach my level on producing, you are not allowed to call anyone as Pseudo Producers here.

They would be different today if anything would have passed off differently in their entire career.

    :bradwink:

And I think it all passed off in just the right way.

Seriously, i was always nice to you, but

What is wrong with you? You cant say that YOUR opinion is the TRUTH. Its just wrong. Some people like the new stuff more than the older stuff. And some like you not. Its ok. But dont say that your goddamn opinion is the fucking TRUTH. Its not. Lyrical whise Meteora is horrible, just for whiny teenager (minus Breaking The Habit). Instrumental its also not so cool in my opinion. Its good but thats it. Try to me nice to the people here. God. I am done.

    2. People think their new stuff is better because it's more mature, complex, and interesting.

    True, true. :)

But it's a really interesting thought. What would have been, if this one thing Don Gilmore did/said (e.g. the "it's your problem"-statement) would not have happened? Maybe it was an important step for them to realize: "No, we don't want to do that anymore" or "Yes, that's a good thing".
Maybe certain songs would sound different, probably many songs wouldn't have existed.
Maybe LP would be an unpopular niche-band now (without Gimlore's decisions)? Who knows, who knows...
