It seems like the right time to make another thread like this, since there seems to be a decent amount of people on here now who are at least somewhat into this kind of music. For clarification, when I say "this type of music," I'm pretty much talking about anything in the realm of metal and hardcore. I don't have any real structure in mind, so post what you damn well please.

Lately I've been listening to this band "Thou" a lot. They recently put out a collaborative EP with another group called "The Body," and this shit is straight savage. I mean foul. I had to take a shower after listening to this noise just to wash the evil away. It's like sludge and doom metal with a little bit of black metal mixed in for good measure.

Yes! I need this thread lol. Really dig the song BTW.

So my year in metal has been very black metal oriented so far (though I think it has to do with the fact that it's still winter. I'm super grim and kvlt like that). I just listened to the new Drowning the Light. Nothing special but great atmosphere. Or course the new Enslaved song, can't wait for the whole thing. I don't think Enslaved is capable of mediocrity. Was kind of disappointed by the new Marduk. It just felt pretty flat.

Eh, it was alright. The production was just too raw for my taste. Not a fan of the vocalist either.

Ne Obliviscaris is one of the most promising Metal bands I've heard in a while. They've got this style of Prog-Death akin to Opeth, yet they there are so much more, and incredibly unique. On top of the usual Metal instrumentation, their clean vocalist is a classically trained violinist, which gives an entire new dimension to the music that makes listening quite rewarding. The song below goes through 3 different movements, and is a great representation of everything the band can do. I will also include one of the most highly acclaimed songs in their discography. If you don't like longer, more drawn out compositions, then this band is probably not for you.

Downfall Of Gaia is a Black Metal band I've recently found out about. They've got this huge, epic, yet downright evil sound to them which I dig a lot. I am probably going to pick up their most recent album soon.

As to 2015 Metal releases, nothing has really caught my eye yet. However, I'm probably going to check out that new Leviathan album coming out next month.

You know, I was listening to Citadel recently. Felt unsatisfied and moved to Portal of I and instantly clicked with it (reclicked?). I think the first album just had a much more fluid sound and I think the more black metal approach works so much better for them. God, I'm all black metal today. Anyways, I really hope their next album flows between heavy and symphonic a lot smoother and that the two aren't so mutually exclusive.

Eh, I much prefer Citadel. While Portal Of I is good, it only has 3 truly worthwhile tracks IMO: Forget Not, And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope, and As Isicles Fall. The rest (especially Tapestry Of The Starless Abstract) sound a bit too much like Opeth. With Citadel, I felt like they really came into their own. I find that Painters Of The Tempest has such incredible flow; the way that the second movement of Part II builds to its explosive climax is so fucking good. And the end part to Pyrrhic hits me right in the feels everytime. It sounds so goddamn painful.

Regardless, I'm incredibly excited to see what they do next. Hopefully that crowd-funded tour wil help them get over here to Texas. :)

Yeah, I'm digging that Drudkh track. I tend to gravitate more towards the grimier, less-polished stuff.

Ne Obliviscaris' "Painters Of The Tempest" is pretty much my favorite metal song of 2014. The rest of Citadel was good but not on the same level.
And I agree with Gibs about Portal Of I being a weaker album.

Haven't really checked out any new records other than this:

It's good but not great and you definitively shouldn't listen to it if you have a headache.

Oh and I have started falling in love with Between The Buried and Me.
Especially Colors is an amazing record.

Any suggestions of anything fast and heavy are welcome. Think stuff like Every Time I Die.

Not really anything like Every Time I Die, but it does fit the category of "fast and heavy." The vocalist may take some getting used to, but the album is so good man.

Converge? (The vocals are an acquired taste, but instrumentally they're definitely fast and heavy)

Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster (even more southern rock elements than ETID)

The Chariot (already broken up; I know you like Josh's new band 68', so you might dig The Chariot as well, since they were not that different)

Converge is probably my favorite heavy band period, but like Chris said, the vocals aren't for everyone. I first heard them around the time Jane Doe came out, and that shrieking was a huge turn off. They eventually won me over, though.

But really I just want an excuse to post this song:

Converge is probably the "heaviest" band that I enjoy(at least what I consider heavy/hardcore).
    So chaotic, much viceral, wow:doge:

Yeah same for me. They never really clicked with me until recently. Now they're one of my favorites.

Jacob Bannon (vocalist): “I think we’re pretty under the radar. We’re a weird band to get into. We’re too punk for the hardcore kids. We’re too hardcore for the metal kids. We’re too weird for the punk kids. We don’t really get a typical audience. We challenge all those sub-genres."
