Wu Xia AKA: Swordsman, Dragon (2011) - 8/10

Another winner for martial arts veteran Donnie Yen. After years in the industry, Yen finally picks up an award of high acclaim for his action-choreography. Remember how badass the fights were in Blade 2? You have Donnie Yen to thank for that.

Peter Chan directs Aubrey Lam & Joyce Chan's rendition of a 'History of Violence', and it is fantastic. The film isn't your usual run of the mill martial arts movie experience. Instead, Chan & co. succeeds in putting a spin on the well-known genre. The first indication involves utilizing a score of which veers away from the conventional that is common for a period flick such as this. The action kicks in near the beginning of the film, but the real spectacle kicks in a little over the halfway mark of the movie and onwards. Donnie Yen's choreography is aptly displayed and is arguably his best work to date. The entirety of the film is involving and beautifully crafted.

If you're into this sort of genre, give it a go. However it must be noted that this isn't an action-packed slug-fest of a film, it is more of an art piece; a visual ode to the genre.

Also, congrats on the team behind Wu Xia for picking up 3 prestigious awards (Best Action Choreography, Best Art Direction, and Best Visual Effects) at the 48th Annual Golden Horse Awards.

    The Mist (2007) - 8/10

Haven't seen a horror film in a while. I didn't see this movie when it was first released because I thought it was your run-of-the-mill monster thriller. Unfortunately, prior to watching this film, I had seen the ending. Thankfully, it didn't ruin my viewing experience. The Mist explores the uglier side of our psychology, and makes you question the human condition. Very refreshing to see a horror film that does not dabble in torture-porn and the like.

Children Who Chase Lost Voices - 4/5

Had to install new software to watch 10-bit video but that aside, the film was amazing. Not exactly what I expected but still utterly beautiful. It's a love letter to Miyazaki, which turns out to be its biggest drawback. Plenty of potential, it's just misplaced.

    Ghost Protocol - 3/5

Incredible visuals but the writing was really sub-par, which is surprising coming from a Pixar alum.

Prologue: Dark Knight Rises was, for lack of a better word, epic.

Best movie I've seen in awhile. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing...

I know, man. It felt so old school. I had some of the songs stuck in my head for a couple days.

50/50 - 8/10, really heartfelt dramedy, I enjoyed this one quite a bit. Some really intense scenes that grab you by the heartballs

Viewed a LOT of films over the week. Not gonna bother with a mini-review, just some comments =]

    American History X 9/10

Fucking amazing. However, this and Terminator 2 will always be a reminder as to what could have been with Mr.Furlong.

    Mystic River 7/10

My first time sitting down and watching an entire film with Sean Penn in it. Great actor. Great film; brooding, thrilling.

    The Green Mile 8/10

I viewed The Green Mile without prior knowledge as to what the story in its' entirety is about. Quite fortunate as the twist part-way through the film really worked as a result.

    The Usual Suspects 6.5/10

I'm probably going to get flamed for giving this one a six out of ten, but hear me out. I just...wasn't invested. Bryan Singer's direction with this one is arguably clever, however I found it a little exhausting to keep up throughout the film. Ironically, I consider the last few minutes of the film as one of my favorite moments in cinema. The editing and composition is pure gold. P.S. The name Keyser Soze will forever be ingrained in my mind T_T.

    A Beautiful Mind 8/10

I'm surprised this was a biopic of sorts. A very compelling tale.

    American Gangster 7/10

I should check out more Ridley Scott, and Steven Zaillian films it seems.

    Cast Away 7/10

I saw this when I was 11. It was very different from my media consumption at the time and I found it to be a very, very engaging experience. Though, watching it with a fresher perspective, it is surprisingly not as good. " WILSON!!!! "
