    Hello!

Lyrically, which is your favorite song? Feel free to drop your favorite sentence(s) from that song too.

For me, I got to say "When I'm Gone" by Em. The whole song's a masterpiece, especially the beginning, which's giving me chills every time:

Have you ever loved someone so much, you'd give an arm for?
Not the expression, no, literally give an arm for?

The message gets even clearer since he has a tattoo of Hallie on his arm. Another must-mention is Sadistik's Absolution (sickest alliteration of all times):

"Acquired conscious competence of all of my accomplishments
And conquered constant comments that contradicted my confidence
Common compliments were called upon to con me in
Accosted consonant comments that condescended all my common sense"

Feel free to share your favorites! (LP songs are welcomed as well)

I don't have one particular absolute favorite, but here's some good ones (just off of the top of my head).
(I apologize for this very long post).

    Opeth - The Moor

The sigh of summer upon my return
Fifteen alike since I was here
Bathed in deep fog, blurring my trail
    Snuffing the first morning rays

Weary from what might have been ages
Still calm with my mind at peace
Would I prosper or fall, drain the past
The lapse of the moment took it's turn

I was foul and tainted, devoid of faith
Wearing my death mask at birth
The hands of God, decrepit and thin
    Cold caress and then nothing

I was taken away from my plight
A treason bestowed to the crowd
Branded a Jonah with fevered blood
    Ungodly freak, defiler

Pale touch, writhing in the embers
Damp mud burning in my eyes
    All the faces turned away
And all would sneer at my demise

    Outcast with dogmas forged below
Seared and beaten, banished from where I was born
No mercy would help me on my way
In the pouring rain nothing is the same

    Vows in ashes
I pledge myself to no one
    Seethed and spiteful
All shudder at the call of my name
If you'll bear with me, you'll fear of me

There is no forgiveness in these eyes
For any of you but one
    Dispel the mist for now
Melinda is the reason why I've come

She is water drops over the pyre
    A thistle in my hands
Stained and torn, aged and brown
    Virtuous shell with kindred innocence

    I awoke from the miasma
    Passing swiftly through the moor
    This is here, waters stir
And in the distance all that was lost

    If you'll bear with me
    You'll fear of me
    You'd never leave me to
    A fate with you

The Beatles - Across the Universe

    Words are flowing out
Like endless rain into a paper cup
    They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe

Pools of sorrow waves of joy
Are drifting through my open mind
    Possessing and caressing me

    Jai Guru Deva, om
    Nothing's gonna change my world
    Nothing's gonna change my world
    Nothing's gonna change my world
    Nothing's gonna change my world

    Images of broken light
Which dance before me like a million eyes
They call me on and on across the universe

Thoughts meander like a restless wind
    Inside a letter box
They tumble blindly as they make their way
    Across the universe

    Jai Guru Deva, om
    Nothing's gonna change my world
    Nothing's gonna change my world
    Nothing's gonna change my world
    Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of life
Are ringing through my opened ears
    Inciting and inviting me

    Limitless undying love
Which shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe

    Jai Guru Deva, om
    Nothing's gonna change my world
    Nothing's gonna change my world
    Nothing's gonna change my world
    Nothing's gonna change my world

    Jai Guru Deva
    Jai Guru Deva
    Jai Guru Deva

    Karnivool - Aeons

    I think there's a pulse,
    But I don't remember feeling
    Anything close to this,
    And I don't know if it's worthwhile.
    But I hope so,
'Cause I don't feel so well
    I don't feel so well

I've got to keep a grip on this,
Or the rising tide could still
    Pull us underneath
And leave us to the ocean.
    Either way,
I'm starting to feel there's something wrong
    With this poison
'Cause in my veins it's burning.

And I hope you hold a place for us,
    Far enough away,
From all the flames they like to tell us about.
And I hope you hold a way for us,
'Cause I don't really know you
    I don't really know you

Why the hell did I seek the truth?
All I've seen [is? / in?] its reflection
Still part of me regrets it.
And I just wanted to see (the truth).
    Now it's clear,
    We're alone in this.

    It's your funeral;
    It's your dying day.
    So make amends,
    Before the end
    Will leave us nothing.

    It's your funeral;
    It's your dying day.
    So make amends,
    For one last stand,
    Then leave with nothing.

    Will I breathe again?
Will my lungs fill with fire?
    When I breathe again,
    I hope it's okay.

    Will I see again?
    When the smoke clears,
    Who will still remain here?
    When I see again,
    I hope it's okay.

Chemical fires will signal we're dead
Chemical fires will signal we're dead
Chemical fires will signal we're dead
Chemical fires will signal we're dead
Chemical fires will signal we're dead and gone
Chemical fires will signal we're dead and gone
Chemical fires will signal we're dead and gone
Chemical fires will signal we're dead and gone
    Chemical fires will signal we're...
    Chemical fires will signal we're...
    Chemical fires will signal we're...
    Chemical fires will signal we're...

Haken - Falling Back to Earth

    [Part I: Rise]

    Save me now
    Set me free

"If you could only show me how"

    Show me how
    To live my dream

"Living the dream I will die"

    Aiming high
    Shooting low

"You won't be laughing when I'm"

    To raise the bar
    Or take the fall?

    "Climbing the mountain"

    Someone rescue me
    Help me, please!
    Against all odds
    I long to be free

Will no one listen to my plea?
The sky is falling in on me

"Save me now, set me free, show me how, live a dream
Aiming high, shooting low, raise the bar, take the fall
Rescue me, help me please, how long to be free
Intervene, I'll defeat, all those who stepped on me"

    Intervene
    I'll defeat
    All the people who
    Stepped on me

You have been standing in my way
You won't believe it when I'm

    Soaring through the sky
    Free from your burden
    Say your last goodbyes
    I won't be back again

When my name becomes tomorrow's news
On top of the mountain I cannot be moved
I scale the summit like an unstoppable force
With iron wings I will prove my worth to you all

I will be dancing on your grave
You won't be laughing when I'm

    Soaring through the sky
    Free from your burden
    Say your last goodbyes
    I won't be back again

    Too close to the flame
    Ambition has burned me
    With my wings ablaze
    I'm falling back to earth

    [Part II: Fall]

Now that my feathers are broken
    Crestfallen my head is bowed
    Splashing down into the ocean
    Something seems different now

The world I once knew has eroded
    Humanity's fossilised
The beasts have become the new masters
    Is reality compromised?

    Advanced technological breakthroughs
    And superior firepower
The frontiers of war and resistance
    Seem abstract and vacant now

For countless years I have been longing
    To apologise, apologise
A world without end is upon us
But time is in short supply

    Soaring through the sky
    Free from your burden
    Say your last goodbyes
    I won't be back again

    Too close to the flame
    Ambition has burned me
    With my wings ablaze
    I'm falling back to earth

    Placebo – "The Crawl"

    It takes the pain away
But could not make you stay
It's way too broke to fix
No glue, no bag of tricks

    Lay me down
    The lie will unfurl
    Lay me down to crawl

Your smile would make me sneeze
    When we were siamese
    Amazing grace in here
I'd pay to have you near

    Lay me down
    The lie will unfurl
    Lay me down to crawl

Don't go and lose your face
    At some stranger's place
    And don't forget to breathe
    And pay before you leave

    Lay me down
    The lie will unfurl
    Lay me down to crawl

    Lay me down
    The lie will unfurl
    Lay me down to crawl
    .

It's hard to choose "one" quote from bands that write amazing lyrics all the time. These are just some of my favorites:

    Karnivool - Sky Machine
You are the salt of the same blood running in our veins
Few have the heart of the brave
Now, will you run or stay?
We hide away our vicious things
    Don't let them out
Even the ones that we don't see
    Who are always there

Rise Against - Anywhere but here
So I dropped out of my own race,
a race with no finish line,
    no first or last place.
These faces all rush right past me.
    I turn and walk away,
cause we finally know now what our
time here's about, we were not meant to be
    another face in the crowd.
    We're a forest of lives,
but we grow tall and wide.
    We'll never be cut down.

    Tool - Schism

There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away.
Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know the dangers of our second guessing.
Doomed to crumble unless we grow, and strengthen our communication.

    Cold silence
    has a tendency
    to atrophy any
    sense of compassion
    between supposed lovers,
    between supposed brothers.

Guns N' Roses - Civil War

    Especially that part:

By bloody hands time can't deny
And are washed away by your genocide
And history hides the lies of our civil wars

And of course Don't Cry by Guns N' Roses.

From ''Californication'' by Red Hot Chili Peppers:

''Destruction leads to a very rough road
    But it also breeds creation''

From ''Suicide Season'' by Bring Me The Horizon:

''If only sorrow could build a staircase, or tears could show the way.
I would climb my way to heaven, and bring him home again.''

From ''Burning In The Skies'' by Linkin Park:

''And in the end we were made to be apart
Like separate chambers of the human heart''

From ''Cha-Ching (Till We Grow Older)'' by Imagine Dragons:

    Just a few:

    Pearl Jam - Black

Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did.
All of five horizons revolved around her soul as the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn

Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all she was

And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds of what was everything.
Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

I take a walk outside, I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear?
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head, I'm spinning, oh,
I'm spinning, how quick the sun can drop away

And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything
All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be... yeah...

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a sun in somebody else's sky,
But why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine?

Alice In Chains - Angry Chair

    Sitting on an angry chair
Angry walls that steal the air
Stomach hurts and I don't care

What do I see across the way, hey
See myself molded in clay, oh
Stares at me, yeah I'm afraid, hey
Changing the shape of his face, aw yeah

Candles red I have a pair
    Shadows dancing everywhere
    Burning on the angry chair

Little boy made a mistake, hey
Pink cloud has now turned to gray, oh
All that I want is to play, hey
Get on your knees, time to pray, boy

    I don't mind, yeah
    I don't mind, I-I-I [2x]
    Lost my mind, yeah
    But I don't mind, I-I-I
    Can't find it anywhere
    I don't mind

    Corporate prison, we stay, hey
I'm a dull boy, work all day, oh
So I'm strung out anyway, hey

    Loneliness is not a phase
Field of pain is where I graze
    Serenity is far away

Saw my reflection and cried, hey
So little hope that I died, oh
Feed me your lies, open wide, hey
Weight of my heart, not the size, oh

    I don't mind, yeah
    I don't mind, I-I-I [2x]
    Lost my mind, yeah
    But I don't mind, I-I-I
    Can't find it anywhere
    I don't mind, I-I-I

Pink cloud has now turned to gray
All that I want is to play
Get on your knees time to pray, boy

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here:

So, so you think you can tell
    Heaven from Hell,
    Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
    From a cold steel rail?
    A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade
    Your heroes for ghosts?
    Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
    Cold comfort for change?
    And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
    We're just two lost souls
    Swimming in a fish bowl,
    Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
    What have we found
    The same old fears.
    Wish you were here.

^"Angry Chair" was written by vocalist Layne Staley and Cantrell (the primary songwriter) has expressed his enthusiasm for Staley "stepping up (...) and writing a masterpiece." :)

----- "Stop This Train" // John Mayer -----
    No I'm not color blind
I know the world is black and white
Try to keep an open mind but...
I just can't sleep on this tonight

Stop this train I want to get off and go home again
I can't take the speed it's moving in
    I know I can't
But honestly won't someone stop this train

Don't know how else to say it, don't want to see my parents go
    One generation's length away
From fighting life out on my own

    Stop this train
I want to get off and go home again
I can't take the speed it's moving in
I know I can't but honestly won't someone stop this train

    So scared of getting older
I'm only good at being young
So I play the numbers game to find a way to say that life has just begun
Had a talk with my old man
    Said, "help me understand"
He said, "turn 68, you'll renegotiate
    Don't stop this train
Don't for a minute change the place you're in
    Don't think I couldn't ever understand
    I tried my hand
John, honestly we'll never stop this train"

See once in a while when it's good
    It'll feel like it should
    And they're all still around
And you're still safe and sound
And you don't miss a thing
'til you cry when you're driving away in the dark.

Singing stop this train I want to get off and go home again
I can't take this speed it's moving in
    I know I can't
Cause now I see I'll never stop this train
    (think I got 'em now)

----- "Right Where It Belongs" // Nine Inch Nails -----
See the animal in his cage that you built
Are you sure what side you're on?
Better not look him too closely in the eye
Are you sure what side of the glass you are on?
See the safety of the life you have built
    Everything where it belongs
Feel the hollowness inside of your heart
    And it's all
    Right where it belongs

    What if everything around you
    Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know
    Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection
Is it all you want it to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks?
    Would you find yourself
    Find yourself afraid to see?

What if all the world's inside of your head
    Just creations of your own?
    Your devils and your gods
All the living and the dead
    And you're really all alone?
You can live in this illusion
    You can choose to believe
You keep looking but you can't find the woods
While you're hiding in the trees

----- "Beneath The Surface" // Dream Theater -----
Is there ever really a right time
You had led me to believe
Someday you'd be there for me

    When the stars above aligned
    When you weren't so consumed
I kept looking for the clues

So I waited in the shadows of my heart
And still the time was never right

Until one day I stopped caring
And began to forget why I longed to be so close
And I disappeared into the darkness
And the darkness turned to pain
    And never went away
    Until all that remained
Was buried deep beneath the surface

A shell of what things could have been

    Tired bones beneath a veil
Of guarded secrets all too frail
Sad to think I never knew
You were searching for the words
    For the moment to emerge

    Yet the moment never came
You couldn't risk my fragile frame

Until one day you stopped caring
And began to forget why you tried to be so close
And you disappeared into the darkness
And the darkness turned to pain
    And never went away
    Until all that remained
Was buried deep beneath the surface

I would scream just to be heard
As if yelling at the stars
I was bleeding just to feel

You would never say a word
Kept me reaching in the dark
    Always something to conceal

Until one day I stopped caring
And began to forget why I longed to be so close
And I disappeared into the darkness
And the darkness turned to pain
    And never went away
    Until all that remained
Was buried deep beneath the surface

^Beneath the Surface eh? It's a good song, but I would have gone with The Spirit Carries On, or A Change of Seasons instead. Beneath the Surface has always come across as a bit cheesy to me, opinions are opinions I guess. The Live at Luna Park version is fucking great though.

"The Little Things Give You Away" and "Breaking the Habit" - Linkin Park
No explanation needed for those songs.

"Empty Reality" - Razor Red Noise
Way in the distance, the haze of burning trees
Belief is in short supply, not with the parallel
But now you wonder how you'll find a peaceful existence
Your source of solace gone, replaced with empty reality

Lasting forever, going back and forth between
Always coming back to haunt your waking hours
A glimpse of light, of life how you thought it would be
A line of thinking, constricting and unrelenting, never ending

    Remaining undefeated
    The parallel retreated

This song's lyrics may seem simple on the surface, but this song closes the album The Parallel and reflects on the whole album and its meaning. This is how Alex describes the album's meaning: Conceptually, the lyrics of The Parallel were written around the idea of dreams: the positive and negative experiences we have through them, and their effects on our waking lives. The "parallel" is literally supposed to mean the distorted, alternate reality in which dreams take place.

"Unforgivable Youth" and "Animal Pharm" - Lupe Fiasco
    Unforgivable Youth and Animal Pharm

"A Modern Myth" - Thirty Seconds to Mars
Did we create a modern myth?
Did we imagine half of it?
What happened then, a thought for now
    Save yourself, save yourself

    The secret is out
    The secret is out

To buy the truth and sell a lie
The last mistake before you die
So don't forget to breathe tonight
Tonight's the last, so say goodbye

    The secret is out [x4]

    Goodbye [x17]

A Modern Myth is a simple song, yet its message is so dark I absolutely love it.

Nine Inch Nails- I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally

As black as the night can get
    Everything is safer now
There's always a way to forget
Once you learn to find a way how

    In the blur of serenity
    Where did everything get lost?
    The flowers of naïveté
Buried in a layer of frost

    The smell of sunshine
    I remember sometimes

Thought he had it all before they called his bluff
Found out that his skin just wasn't thick enough
Wanted to go back to how it was before
    Thought he lost everything
Then he lost a whole lot more

    A fool's devotion
    Swallowed up in empty space
    The tears of regret
Frozen to the side of his face

    The smell of sunshine
    I remember sometimes

I've done all I can do
Could I please come with you?
    Sweet smell of sunshine
    I remember sometimes

William Elliott Whitmore- Does Me No Good

Can I forgive my past transgressions
Can I forgive my own past sins
    That's not likely
No I will never feel the same again

Well, it does me no good to say I'm sorry
Although I am, for what it's worth
But you can't hear me for you're resting
Six feet under the cold black dirt

Oh, them daisies they sure look pretty
    Blooming down by your stone
They remind me that life continues
    And I'll never be alone

I'd give my body, I'd give my soul
For one more chance to make amends
But that's not possible for my means could not justify my end
It does me no good to sit and think of
All the things that I done wrong
It took me forever to remember what I should have known all along

Well if you can hear my last confession
If you can hear my final plea
Oh, although I never showed it
Oh, you meant the world to me
It does me no good to recollect on
All that whiskey has done been spilt
And my bow ain't gonna flow all the way down by them bricks of guilt
