Mike Shinoda recently sat down with NME to talk about LIVING THINGS. In the interview, Mike clarifies that although the band's upcoming release will see them go back to their roots in some ways, the record will not feature the "Nu-Metal" sound that was prominent in Linkin Park's early years. Here's what he had to say:

Regarding the claims that LIVING THINGS will incorporate more heavy guitars than their recent albums:
    He also added:
On how experimental this album will be compared to A Thousand Suns:

In an updated article published on April 19th, NME get more information from Mike Shinoda regarding LIVING THINGS.

On if LIVING THINGS is a varied album:
How does LIVING THINGS compare to A Thousand Suns?
Shinoda then said that the album was an "uptempo" effort and that the band were looking forward to taking it out on tour.

On LIVING THINGS' energy and song lengths:
Speaking to NME about 'Living Things', co-frontman Mike Shinoda replied to a question about what had inspired the album's lyrics by revealing that they were about the band's own lives and that was why they had chosen the title 'Living Things'.

Asked about the album's lyrics, Shinoda said:

The singer also said that the album has a variety of moods, but that the anger that was a feature of the band's early work remains part of their repertoire.

Asked if the record had any angry lyrical moments, he replied:

Shinoda went on to say that the band's new record actually reminded him of the group's formative days, when they were still called 'Hybrid Theory' and hadn't become Linkin Park yet.

Speaking about the record's influences, he said:

If this means they've recaptured their hypercreative vibe from the pre-HT and HT era, then my excitement for this record just increased a lot.

This reminds me of that South Park episode where Tom Cruise and John Travolta go into Stan's closet and won't come out and then R. Kelly goes in, "... And now I'm in the closet too!"
    http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/155133/r-kelly-sings-with-tc-jt

Only... The 'closet' is now the toolbox and Mike is R. Kelly.

COME OUT OF THE TOOLBOX, MIKE. YOU NEED TO COME OUT OF THE TOOLBOX RIGHT NOW.

"I'll say it like this, with 'Minutes To Midnight' and even more so with 'A Thousands Sun', we were making an effort to get away from the sound of the first two records. The reason for that was that we felt if we made a third record that sounded that way, we'd be pigeonholed into doing that forever."

I totally agree. But lots of people will keep being stuck in the past with the first 2 albums.. They really need to move on :p

Am I the only one who thinks this record might sound like a less out there version of Reanimation? Think about it...the band is quick to say the album is NOT nu-metal, but that it has the creative spirit of their older albums. It's also NOT ATS part two. Seeing as MTM/ATS weren't "the old LP" and Hybrid Theory/Meteora were nu-metal...that only leaves one more album :p.
