    New Signature Policy

We've recently fielded some complaints about the large size of signatures on these forums. Some signatures are getting out-of-control big and wide. For those of us with laptops or slower internet connections, it has become an inconvenience to scroll through and load some pages.

Revised restrictions: The largest a signature should be is this size. Signatures should be no bigger than 500 pixels in width and 375 pixels in height (image and lines of text included). There's a small bit of leeway, but please don't take ample advantage of our leniency.

Please note that the 525 pixels rule is no longer in effect. It is now 500 so that the information pane isn't indented.

We find that when your signature is dwarfing the size of your post, it does tend to look ridiculous.

This policy will go into effect immediately. Please alter your signatures accordingly.

    Thank you!

Hang on a sec, does that mean I have to get rid of mine or parts of it?

Okay, but it still doesn't matter how big the sig is kb-wise right?

Oh, and could you maybe tell us how big 4 inches is in pixels? That would be handy for the sig making...

Because the size limit isn't restricted to images, it includes any text as well.

    4 inches = 380 pixels.

Luke, I can adjust your signature since I have the file.

And I thought 525 pixel width was okay. I wonder what happened to that. I suppose I'll have to adjust mine.

Notice how your user info panel is squished in comparison to mine? It's preferable to have the info windows all parallel, but not entirely necessary.

But 525 is acceptable. I'll edit that in.

Yeah, I noticed how mine is squished compared to yours. It's just that it doesn't really bother me considering I don't have information that's squished to cover two lines, ya know?

But I'll format my signature to 500, since it's preferred and all.

I totally felt like I was being lectured when I read this thread. I've edited my signature, is it okay now?

We're measuring something on the web, not your...erm, height. Web is generally measured in pixels. But if you wish to be different, feel free to convert all the values in the LPA skins from pixels to inches.

    ....

It gives the user, and us, an easier way to measure the total length of a signature, being image + text. If someone has a 300 pixel high image and then a few stanzas from a song, how are we supposed to relate all of that in pixels? I'm not going to start approximating the space between the image and the text, plus the size of the text in pixels. Font pt and px are different values, as you know. It's easier to take a clear ruler and put it up against your screen. Plus, it's easier for a member to visualize 4 inches than 380 pixels. "Hey, is that getting close to 4 inches?" is a much easier conclusion to come to than "I think I might be nearing 380 pixels!".

You're giving me a headache, Mr. Costanza.

Wouldn't 4 inches physically measured out using a ruler be different on a 1024x768 resolution versus 1600x1200 [or even 1280x1024, for that mater]? So, I could probably argue that my signature is under 4 inches when I physically measure it myself, while it looks bigger to you. Lucky for you, I can't find my ruler anywhere.

The Web Developer extension for Firefox has a pretty sweet ruler which you can drag over an area and it'll tell you it's exact width and height. You can do it that way, or view the element information to figure out my signature is exactly 500x230px [edit: actually less, because it seems to also include the space between the message and signature, close enough though]. And if you don't use Firefox, use printscreen and figure it out in Photoshop.

And to your font size argument: I'm a web developer/designer on the side, I know that. Not my fault vB uses pt - I use px when designing.

I'm on a 1280x1024 resolution, and your signature is approx. 2 inches high.

The 4 inches thing isn't the strictest of guidelines. There's leeway. What's 4 inches on a 1280x1024 resolution could be 4.5 inches on a 1024x768 resolution. (Let's just say these are the two most common resolutions). It's just a rough guideline to have people adhere to. We're not going to remove your signature for the sake of half an inch. This is just meant to discourage those with humongous signatures to keep their signatures smaller.

And 1600x1200 is a ridiculous resolution.
