It gives the user, and us, an easier way to measure the total length of a signature, being image + text. If someone has a 300 pixel high image and then a few stanzas from a song, how are we supposed to relate all of that in pixels? I'm not going to start approximating the space between the image and the text, plus the size of the text in pixels. Font pt and px are
different values, as you know. It's easier to take a clear ruler and put it up against your screen. Plus, it's easier for a member to visualize 4 inches than 380 pixels. "Hey, is that getting close to 4 inches?" is a much easier conclusion to come to than "I think I might be nearing 380 pixels!".
You're giving me a headache, Mr. Costanza.
