If Mike's entire musical career consisted of Fort Minor stuff, I think he'd be on the same level as Trent. Mike did basically everything instrumentally and writing-wise on the Fort Minor stuff, Trent does pretty much the same with Nine Inch Nails. But alas, Fort Minor is just a side project, and Mike's career will come to be defined as part of a band. Trent Reznor more or less IS Nine Inch Nails, but Mike Shinoda, while he more or less IS Fort Minor, is only 1/6 of Linkin Park.
I know, I'm just saying that Trent's been doing everything by himself for his entire musical career while Mike only did things by himself on one side project album that didn't get nearly as much recognition as Linkin Park does. To most people, Mike's the rapper/backup singer/keyboard player/rhythm guitarist in Linkin Park, whereas Trent Reznor is the creative genius behind everything Nine Inch Nails has ever done. People KNOW Trent can make it on his own, he's done it since the beginning. On the other hand, Mike Shinoda's sold 40-something million albums...with a band that has 5 other people in it.
... I laughed looking at this title. I believe the winner in this dual is...Michael Trent Reznor, thank you very much, and if anyone dare challenge me on his name, ninwiki it, bitches.
I think it's weird to even compare the two of them. They're both extremely talented people and have had a great career. But I'd have to say Trent Reznor definitely is more creative, NIN is a band that has been realising amazing music for a very long time!
That's what I mean. I think Reznor and Shinoda are over-rated. Except Reznor tops out Shinoda with The Fragile, the only thing I respect that Reznor put out. Shinoda just puts strings on every other song. And if Rodriguez-Lopez didn't noodle so much, he'd top 'em both. But I do understand where the noodiling came from since it's salsa oriented and makes loads of sense if you put it on keys. But between Mike and Trent, I'd go with Trent.
Mike's good at making cookie-cutter, catchy radio-friendly songs but Trent is more experimental, more artistic, more skilled.
that's a good point you bring up. but going in between genres like that....I mean Fort Minor is hip hop. in hip hop, you have your beat, (maybe) strings, and vocals. In Reznor's music, there are much more parts to it that make it what it is.
Not necessarily. The song many consider to be Trents best work, Hurt, is also one of the simplest songs he's ever recorded, and is certainly simpler than any Fort Minor song I can think of.
We NIN fans shouldn't have to lie. MC T.Rez was trying his best to spit some phat rhymes, and failed miserably. So he called it "spoken word" or some crap to hide the fact that he's just terribly white I believe meathead calls it "Yo NIN Raps". No, but Trent has done some collabs with rappers. I mean...he remixed Diddy's "Victory" (I believe), sung in El-P's "Flyentology", and the song "Even Deeper' off of the left disc of the Fragile was produced by Dr. Dre.
Well call it what you like but either way Down In It kicks asses. And as far as Flyentology is concerned, I think it's the worst song on that album even though Trent is in it.
