View Full Version : Do you fear death?

We had this strange talk with my mates today. Some of them said they're scared of death because they think there'll be just nothing more after they die. But I don't fear death because I think there's another life after life...

Your thoughts on this?

I don't believe in a god so I think we just die. And no I'm not scared of death.

I don't believe in God as well. But I'm kinda interested in Buddhism so that's it.

Buddhism is to weird for me cause I prize material possesions, so it probably wouldn't work for me :P

No, I’m not afraid of death. It’s inevitable. It’s going to happen whether you want it to or not. There’s no going around it.

I don't want to die, and I dread the day it'll happen, but I also know it's inevitable. So yes and no, I am somewhat fearful of death, but I can understand it.

That's where I disagree. I don't think there's any predetermined time we will die, only the eventuality. Mistakes of humanity is what causes death, not some time-keeping force, in my opinion.

I used to be afraid of death but once I was in a hospital bed not knowing whether or not I'm going to die - that just made me expect death, you could say.

I'm not saying I'm walking down the street and expect a car to hit me all the sudden. I'm just saying that it's something that happens. I mean, we all die.

Why waste this gift of life we have, worrying about death?

I don't fear death...because I believe that there is life after it. Too many times have I expereienced talking to 'dead' people, so.....It's what type of life beyond....that I fear...

I accept death, I fear the pain associated with death and the pain of my loved ones, but to be selfish and inconsiderate, I don't care if I die or not. Semper Fi.

Same. I fear pain, not death, regardless of how it will come across my lifetime.

I don't believe in a god but I do believe there is something more beyond the boundaries of our own lives. Where there is an end there is always a beginning. Reincarnation..not too sure.

Why waste this gift of life we have, worrying about death?

Exactly. No use in letting fear control your life.

This question used to haunt me to tears when I was younger. I couldn't bare the thought of my body being six feet under the cold earth. My Nana told me she was to have her body cremated when she died. This frightened me to think of my grandmother's body burned to ashes. Of course I was only 10 or 11. I used to get so wound up with the idea of what comes after death. Do I realize I'm dead? Am I brought back to life? What happens when the Earth ceases to exist, when the human race dies? What's next? I used to ask these Q's to myself every night.

I've seem to have gotten over the whole "what comes after death" trip. I can comfortably talk about the issue without losing my wits. I suppose you can begin to care less about your will to live and dying when you threaten suicide. Been there, done that. I suppose now I believe death is inevitable and only time will tell.

I agree with Mark. Someday, the world will either be cleaner and healthier than ever imagined, or chaos will break out and the whole world will be one big Iraq. But if eventually the world is a bio cleanser ( I dunno what they are called, people go into them before going into certain labs, and it's supposed to disinfect you and all that) and there is no more disease, we could live forever, if we had something that could stop your heart from..stopping..then it could be reality. (Except with disease.) So yeah I don't think we have to die someday, thats one reason I don't believe in God. If we don't die, we don't goto an alternate universe/reality/"heaven"/"hell", we just...stay, so there really would be no purpose of a heaven or hell.

That may have been confusing, but if you didn't understand it, then your not worthy. :P

None of my immediate family is religious, but a lot of my relatives are, and they're always trying to force their beliefs on us. They try to scare us all into believing if we don't worship God that we're going straight to hell after death, and you know the whole preachy lecture... Eh. I don't know what I believe. I wish I didn't have to believe anything and it could all just happen..... But i've lost some friends to suicide this past year, and death basically freaks me out. I know it's going to happen someday, but the thought of losing everyone you care about and everything, just... makes me uncomfortable. It's happened too many times before. :wth:

I'm not sure if I believe in god or not.. that one's left for me still unanswered. But I am kind of afraid in a way of dying, and the other half of me just isn't. I guess i'm scared about wether or not it'll hurt or where i'll end up. Will we all really end up in heaven? Yes I know Hell is an option but, is there 'really' a heaven? A place where you live forever happily. No worries, no dying, no pain.. It seems almost TOO unbelievable to me.

Riencarnation is a definite in my beliefs.

I remember having these weird dreams when I was a kid, I was a soldier in the Civil War and the troop would talk about all sorts of battles we're getting ready to engage in. The last dream I had about it I was on a hilltop and it was the middle of winter, freezing cold, then all of a sudden the unit starting talking fire, I positioned my rifle over a rock and saw artillery go off, then I woke up in sweat.

It felt so real, I didn't understand at the time. It scared me because I was probably 6 or 7 years old. I always though I was reincarnated, even as a child. No European descent that would date back to the 1800's, so I keep wondering if I was reincarnated, it wouldn't be in my very own bloodline.

Not knowing whats gonna happen is unsettling. In any case i think. One tends to assume the worst when you dont know whats gonna happen. I dont know whats going to happen once i die, i have no clue. So there is nothing positive to ease my tension about it. To me, the unknown is somthing i cant grasp and understand..it just makes me uneasy

I don't fear death, however, I fear the impact it may have on those around me. It's how I feel about suicide, as well. I don't really give a damn about my own feelings, but I really care about those around me. I always wonder why I just don't die, and then think about those who know me, or have known me... How would it affect them? It's a natural thing--we can't avoid death, but I think for the most part, we have to accept that and live it to our own extents.

Like I said, I really think more along the lines of what others will feel than myself. I, personally, don't fear death... I'm actually really interested in death, suicide, etc. but in a medical/physical factor. I've always wondered how'd I die, or when I'd die, and or will it be someone to kill me. So no, I don't fear death .

I just think we all need to except that we're Going to die. It's not so fearfull if you think about how many other people have died. I do believe in God, maby not a Christian God but i think that there is a God. I dont know if i believe in life after death, but if you think about it it doesnt really matter. I think people are more afraid of getting up the next morning (or lack there of) because thats the only un-certainty we have.

I don't fear being dead, but dying is a different story. I'm afraid of drying slowly.. I guess. . . I don't know its complicated. I very well DO believe in after life.. maybe not on this planet, but everyone definately becomes someone else after they die. Maybe we're all aliens under someone else's control. Maybe we're all cows and eat chickens when no one is looking! WHO KNOWS?! NOT ME BWUAHAHAHAHA .. YOU MAY NEVER KNOW...

I have some pretty strange theories.

No, I don't think I'm scared to die. It's a natural thing and if it was that bad, there's surely someone somewhere who would've been able to come back from it, but what comes after our death bugs me a little... I think the most beautiful explanation I ever heard was from one of my firends: She said something like we are souls waiting for another world. When we die, it's because we're mature enough for this other world. But we don't realise we get this maturity, that,s why people of every age dies everyday.

I don't know if it's true, but I think it's the most poetic explanation I heard. And as an Atheist, it,s one of the few not involving any kind of god or spirit.

I am not afraid of dying, we all are going to die one day or another. the funny thing is that, well maybe not funny, but what dies is the body, the flesh and bone, and our spirit lives on forever, thats according to my belives, we all have different belives.

do i fear death?
yes and no.....
yes because i believe that death is just the beginning and leads to eternal rest in a place judged on how you lived your life. I guess it's the eternal bit that scares me....and the fact i will be alone and there's no turning back.
On the otherhand, i don't fear it cos if it's my time it's my time. I am a strong believer in fate...and whatever was intended for me i can only accept.

This is the one thing I can hardly talk about
When I start thinking about death I just stay in my room for days with hardly any sleep Screeming in my head that i dont want to die(seriously Im not just saying this). Because when deeth comes to mind I think what if there isnt another life and then just think that deeth is an endless sleep without dreems and with no way to be awaken.

I'll put is this way. I automatically thought "Of course not!" But I think I'll only be scared of it when I'm faced with it. Why be scared of a test that's 20 years away? That kind of logic. When I'm in a life or death situation then I'll take out a laptop, post on LPA and tell you if I'm scared.

I am scared, I admit. But I heard a quote: 'I'm not scared of dying, I'm just scared to death of living.' and since I heard that, I realized that that just may be what i'm really scared of.. I would think i'm scared of dying, but deep down I think life scares me most.

Your thoughts on this?
i'm just like ur friend! i'm scared of death

i know there's life after death, i believe in that... but i still afraid of it......... but i think cuz i still love to live in this world......there's many things that i wanna get in this world i'm not ready yet to the death. But when the time is come we know we can deny it , dun even to hide from it. i'll face it!!!! we must to, right??!!

try to do the best in this world, thats what i wanna do..... i'm sure u'll do the same thing.

I'm not afraid of death, I'm afraid of what's going to happen when I die.

I always live my life to the fullest, every day like it's my last. I'm young. I don't expect to die this young, but where I live, you have to be careful.

I'm actually afraid of growing old. Because with growing old, you don't get to do all the stuff you did when you were younger, and you know death is coming around the corner and there is nothing you can do but wait for it.

That scares the s*it out of me.

Being old would be kind of fun because you like, wouldn't have to work and you'd still get money! And you'd get to talk on the phone 24/7 and nobody would grouch and you! And you'd have tons of time to do anything you wanted to! And...Nevermind.

But sometimes it doesn't nessesarily work out that way.

I used to fear death. Not for myself, but for my family. I sometimes worried myself to tears about losing Grammie and Eddie, and when the day came for Grammie to go, I realized there wasn't much to it. It was the suffering and the pain that I don't want.

It was hard, really, really hard - to sit there and watch her try to breathe and have seizures. I don't want to go through that, and I don't want to see anybody else I love go through that. I'm probably going to suffer, knowing my luck. But as long as I'm sedated beyond reality then I'm fine. I'll go when it's my time.

I think your friend is very wise. That's a very beautiful theory.

I'm not afraid to die. But I think that if death comes, I will be scared because then I think i've missed so much in my whole life...
That's why i'm hoping on a life after death. [/b][/quote]
yeah... it must be horrible when you know youre gonna die and you realise you missed out on so much. :wth:
