Though this has virtually nothing to do with this site - it needs to be said. I'm going to quote Lex on this one because he says it better than me:

Prepare yourselfs for a shitload of Hack Attacks, XP users.
Windows 2k and NT4 Source Code has been Leaked. I won't provide links to the downloads and such, but if you look, you'll find 'em. This'll mean lots of things. For example, the code for programs such as paint, notepad, and others are now avaliable. Expect to see word processors, image programs and such spawn from that code. Second, you'll see new edited operating systems around for download, edited versions of Windows 2000.
And more nastily, all the exploits that couldn't be seen can now be found. They could be found before, but this makes it PISS EASY. So, all you XP users, or users of any system based off NT, get ready for a shitload of hacks.
Please make sure you take great care. Use a firewall if you can - I don't want to see any member of this forum have damage done to their computers.
Thanks all.
--LPA Staff.
Edit: I don't think this affects those with 95/98/ME/Linux/Mac users as each OS has its own source code - but I'm not sure

I got firewalls, i got antiviruses, so many of them my computer is tighter than Fort Knox.
Guys, don't over react. Most hackers and virus writers exploit holes that already exist, have been documented and not fixed. It's the real pros, the real experts working for reputable companies such as Norton who find those holes and would never, ever in a million years take advantage of an unpached system. The bad people who make viruses and hack computers don't even know what a single line of the source code does and sure as hell couldn't read it and find a security hole.
Also, the code that leaked is a small portion. The source code that was leaked is around 600 megabytes, the entire Windows 2000 souce, every line of it, weighs in around 40 gigabytes according to another article on this I read. So as far as people releasing edited versions of Windows 2000, ain't gonna happen.

For those of you wondering about what a firewall is and or what to get check out "Zone Alarm". Its free, easy to use, and it works.
Make sure you've got all critical updates from microsoft's update page as well, and have your antivirus loaded with the latest updates.
Most importantly, don't open attachements of emails that look/sound suspicious and/or you don't know the sender.
Lotta #### going around lately, gotta love microsofts shitty, i mean quality, software.

Guys, if you have XP, most likely you have a firewall. To make sure its turned on:
Start>Control Panel>Network and Internet Connections>Network Connetions>Right Click on your internet connection>Properites>Advanced.
If the box is checked that says Internet Connection Firewall, you're all set. If not, check it and hit OK. Be warned that you might not be able to send/receive files over certain networks once you turn it on.

Firewall is a program that controls data coming to and out of your computer.
ZoneAlarm is a prtty good one, and it's free.

A real cracker can hack windows even without the source code. Actually, if you're so mart u can read it, then you must be something like Mitnick :P

from Ircspy: :wth:
The source code leak from Microsoft is not as serious as first feared, security experts have advised.
Early indications are that the code that has been published will be of limited use to hackers. The 658MB which has been posted online in a compressed file makes up less than two per cent of the total source code for Windows 2000 and NT.
"I wouldn't be panicking too much," said Graham Titterington, senior analyst at Ovum.
"Understanding source code is a difficult job even for skilled hackers, and it's unclear how much good it will do them."
Hackers are most likely to be focusing on finding system code levels, where the operating system interacts with other data. This gives an idea of the data structures that are passed backwards and forwards by the operating system.

Crackers don't hack... I am a cracker. Crackers are more positive, instead of trying to deface something or screw someone over, we reverse engineer programs and play with the source in order to make it easier to use.. or in some cases.. *ahem* register it.
About the 600megs/40 gigs. Don't let this scare you, it's a tiny bit of source, and they will have people from Norton and whatnot analyzing this source as well to make security patches and whatnot. Where there is something negative going down on the net, there's always another side trying to stop the negative stuff. Just take the normal precautions, AV, firewall and Security Updates and you should be fine.

Well, if you've installed it, you should remember =P
And Virus scans are always slow depending on how many files you have on it. Every single file is scanned (with my anti-virus anyway) so it's bound to take a while.

How does having a new connection get rid of a firewall? It might muck things up but it certainly won't delete it
