View Full Version : Budget Cuts?

This year sucks because of budget cuts. We don't have enough English books so we have to use them a few classes at a time. We don't have enough new french books, so we're using old ones from the 70s or 80s. Most of our teachers are doing this bullshit thing called "work to rule" Where they are only working the hours that are required and not doing after-school activities. So now making up tests are going to be a pain in the ass and after school help will be limited. I think it's going to hurt us more. They want more money and we don't have it. Stupid F*ckin teachers.

Are you're schools cut at all?

Anthony.
02-12-2004, 12:47 AM
Yep, stuff like that happens. 80's dictionnaries, not enough money to buy adequate scales for sciences, and teachers that work for the money. It's like that everywhere, in every country or almost  .

Yup, the budget is a huge problem here at the University level... Next year there will be an increase in fees and a decrease in financial aid for students. Governor Schwarzenegger's budget cuts are also going to cut the amount of pay that professors get, and classes are going to be bigger. As if it wasn't hard enough to get into classes here, it's going to be even harder next year (believe me, it's already hard enough... this semester I had to find another class at the last minute just because the English class I was waitlisted for was full). There's an artilce about the budget at UCB here (http://www.berkeley.edu/news/berkeleyan/2004/01/14_budge.shtml).

As to the "work to rule" thing, I think that's crap. Teachers should be more accommodating to students and not leave them hanging. They female dog about the future, yet they aren't willing to give a little of their own time to help some students. Some teachers just don't get what it is to educate, do they? Greedy mofo's.

Wait, wait, this year? Wow, my schools must just be plain cheap, then. They've been like that ever since I was in elementary...

If there are enough books for everyone in school, that's a lucky thing, as for the teachers, really, they don't care--you fail, you fail; it's your own problem . We all use books that were made in the 70's, except for History, another school donated History books that were published in 2000 to us, and yeh, :wth:.

Do you ever think before you post, Animal? I'm starting to get extremely annoyed with your mindless posts.

Moving on:

University top-up fees are being introduced by my best friend Mr. Tony Blair either next year, or when I'm in my final year; either way I'm going to be in a lot of debt come the end of it all.

Basically he's burning the ladder that he once climbed by not allowing student grants (so I've heard from the news).

Well, usually no one likes funding education and schools. They prefer funding the army. What a world we live in...

It depends what grade your School is. The higher the grade, the more money it gets. Since my school is a "D" school, it sucks. Lovely. :)

Actually... no... I'm not going to stress the many reasons why.. But here is one which is short and simple. "It's not what you know, it's who you know."...

So.. how old are you? Just because you dont have good books, you drop out school? At least learn something from the 80's books instead of nothing :wth:

It's always been that way here. At least the teachers at my school care about stuff and they do extra-curricular things all the time. Maybe it's because we live in a town where everyone knows everyone else. It's not that small though, we have about 10 000 people

My school just got a huge amount of funds and they are building a brand-new school down the road from me. It's going to be really big, and is going to have two football fields, three baseball fields, two softball fields, six tennis courts, a soccer field, and a gigantic field house. The lunch room is going to have an Arby's, a Burger King, a Pizza Hut, and a Taco Bell. It's going to be awesome. But I won't be able to go to the school, because construction won't be over until I graduate.

But, for now, my school is pretty crappy. I hate it. The food is terrible, the resources are awful. It's just bad right now.

We had budget cuts just this year. We can't play certain games in gym anymore, we can't get new equipment for the football team so they have to use fundraisers (like I care), they took away all these snacks and food and stuff at lunch, we got rid of 2-3 teachers, and the students have to pay more for driver's ed. I think that's all...my mom is a teacher.

Just because he dropped out doesn't mean he can't get money. It's just that he'll have to work 20 hrs in a factory (for example) to get what he'd earn in half the time, sitting in an air-conditioned office.

I prefer a drop-out who works to a diploma-owner who doesn't work or who cheats on ppl, though.

Same with my town. Only we fit our 10,000 into a square mile

We got a lucky break though. The state is giving us alot of money to fix up the school. The teachers were getting sick because of the mold, when it snowed the roofs had to be shoveled because there was danger of them collapsing, the windows barely kept out anything, egh. It was pretty bad. But now thats all changing :)

do you have an apartment that you pay for by yourself? i'm sure it's no.

do you have a car that you actually pay for and wasn't given to you by your mommy or daddy? once again, probably no.

so who's the "loser" now? and i don't work 20 hours a day

edit: i actually work from 3:00 pm till 11:00 pm on the weekdays. haven't been lately because i had vaction days but i go back to work monday

2nd edit: oh and that's only 9 hours. you're going to work 9 hours sitting on your ass at a computer in a office too. i'd rather be up and about doing something than be sitting on my ass for 9 hours

Well, I can't say that making fun of someone for dropping out of High School gets you in my book for being someone I actually like.

If I get warned because I have no respect for someone who makes fun of people who drop out of High School, so be it. I didn't find Will's joke to be funny at all.

You wont be warned for disagreeing with something Will said. You'd only be warned if you deliberately disrespected him or insulted him in some manner. You merely disagreed.

Will is a nicer guy then you think, I'm sure once he sees how offended you were, he will apologize for the joke. But keep in mind, you too were guilty of saying some offensive stuff in the past. However, you stepped up and apologized so I have strong faith Will will do the same thing. He's no jerk.

derek- i didn't call will a loser. that's why i specifically put it in quotation marks. i was implying with those that that is what he was basically calling me, but didn't come right out and say it(so he could basically find a loop hole in the rules). i was making a point to him that it's not right to make fun of me because i dropped out of high school...especially when i'm doing just fine in life. i then went on to ask him if he has everything i have in life, and i'm pretty sure the answers are no.

how can i possibly be warned for that? being arrogent isn't against the rules. no where in the rules does it stat a person can not be arrogent. you guys are making up rules as you go along! come on, derek, you can not seriously think that is a fair warning.

shouldn't will and kat be warned for extremly disrespecting me and making fun of me? the fact that they are making fun of the way i chose to live my life is extremly offending yet they are allowed to do that? that's totally unfair and i think you should really think about that.

You're right, its not cool for the moderators to make fun of you and they shouldn't be acting that way. But I see how you were just fighting back at everyone who was making fun of you so I revoke my warning.

I think person problems need to be resolved away from topics as much as possible... In too many topics are we seeing things going wayy off topic. Sometimes we lose our cool, but like always, I say cool off and come back. Anyways, more on topic.

Animal, sometimes dropping out isn't an option. Some of us have to live with the budgets because we, as ourselves, want to persue something much more, and although I understand your point of view, I think, as I am posting now, to you, should be a most considerable way of posting. There really needs to be respect or all hell breaks loose. Anyways, sometimes, like in my situation, I have to live with the problems, like budgets. I'm egar to do more with my life than be a drop out, though I've considered it, but it's always come back to the disappointment of family and myself. I know everyone's different, but I, myself, cannot choose dropping out as an option, so some of us have to live with them, and we can't always run away from problems like that. Not saying you did or anything.

---

Try to stay more on topic, PLEASE. This, like many other threads, are good threads, and we don't need our dislike/miscommunitcation/whatever it may be for one another to have them closed. Think before you post :). That goes for everyone.
