View Full Version : Pirates of the Caribbean:
[Darken Hybrid]
06-30-2003, 05:56 AM
Opening July 9, 2003 from the Walt Disney Pictures.
Story:
"For the roguish yet charming Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp), the crystalline waters of the Caribbean, like the high seas the world over, present a vast playground where adventure and mystery abound. But Jack’s idyllic life capsizes after his nemesis, the wily Captain Barbossa (Rush), steals his ship, the Black Pearl, and later attacks the town of Port Royal, kidnapping the Governor’s (Pryce) beautiful daughter, Elizabeth Swann (Knightly). Elizabeth’s childhood friend, Will Turner (Bloom), joins forces with Jack to commandeer the fastest ship in the British fleet, the HMS Interceptor, in a gallant attempt to rescue her and recapture the Black Pearl. The duo and their motley crew are pursued by Elizabeth's betrothed, the debonair, ambitious Commodore Norrington (Davenport), aboard the HMS Dauntless. Unbeknownst to Will, there is a curse that has doomed Barbossa and his crew to live forever as the undead, where each moonlight, they are transformed into living skeletons. The curse they carry can be broken only if a once-plundered treasure is restored."

Umm...someone doesn't get action very often.
Anywho, me being a huge Disney fan have been looking foward to this movie for more than a year. At last, it will be here in a few days. Johnny Depp is the perfect pirate and Orlando Bloom is a great hero. The other guy in the movie....uhhh, whatever.
This storyline does NOT follow the one on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. (edit: See FreeFloatingAngel, I said they do not follow the movie's plot!!!!)
Usually, Disney makes movies and then makes rides. Now, they're making movies from rides. First came the Country Bears which sucked ass, now there's this movie, and next will be The Haunted Mansion.
This movie is the first Disney movie that's rated PG-13 and I know it doesn't seem like a big deal, it is. This movie must kick ass if they have to make history like that.
The best part about all this, I'm going to be AT Disneyland when the movie comes out on July 9th. They have an AMC theatre around there and I'm going to watch it there!
They had the premier for this movie on Saturday the 28th and all the celebs came to watch it on this huge movie screen that was erected on the Rivers of America INSIDE Disneyland. Just picture a giant movie screen behind a river, outside. Cool, huh?!
:D

There was another movie made after a ride. Can't remember what it was. A scary elevator thing, I think it was twilight something. I don't know, but it exists.

woohoo finally a movie that im waiting for. and since orlando bloom is dead sexy, he will make this movie oh that much better ;D johnny depp as a pirate scares me though.
jawknee - i went on the ride at Disney World. it was about the actual pirates of the caribbean, the movie story did NOT come from the ride but from the history of the actual pirates.
LT - Tower of Terror! BEST ride ever. yeah Disney Channel made a movie from it, didn't have much to actually do with the ride. actually Tower of Terror came from the Twilight Zone, I think.
I saw the previews for it and it looks kinda crappy. But on the other hand, if the movie isn't comedy or porn, I probably won't like it.

I am a fan of Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom so most likely I will enjoy it. :)
The movie looks somewhat intriguing, so I'll probably be going to see it.

There you go again! I never said they were the same things!! I SAID THEY WERE DIFFERENT. Dude, read my posts carefully before responding, please!
Oh, and LinkinTheory, The Tower of Terror was a ride based on The Twilight Show which came out and then they made a ride for it...so that's not an example of a ride-into-a-movie idea. ;)

so they got the title from it. you do realize that the pirates of the caribbean really existed, right? that's what the ride was about. the movie did not come from the ride, trust me. but that doesn't mean they still won't advertise the movie right by the ride ;D

Okay, then why would it be a Disney movie? Trust me, I know more about this than you do. Disney planned this out years ago: to do 3 movies from 3 attractions at their park and this is movie 2. Trust me, you are wrong.

I am seeing the movie in an hour! :)
I saw the movie tonight and it was AWESOME! The acting was superb, the action was amazing, and the special effects and imagery were perfect and breathtaking. The comedy was hilarious too. Johnny Depp delivered an amazing performance as Captain Jack Sparrow and Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley turned in extraordinary performances as Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. Not a moment of the 150 minutes movie isn't filled with action or comedy, it's truely one of the best of the year. The numerous swordfights and battle scenes make the movie action packed and filled to the brim with fun. You will not be bored when you see this movie.
Final Score: 9.9
-0.1 for that annoying skeleton monkey.
Best Disney movie ever.

Anywho, it's funny that I was just on vacation at the Disneyland Resort which has an AMC Theatres inside the Downtown Disney portion of the resort, and I didn't watch the film.
It was sold out the entire opening day. The theatre I work at has it, but I'm going to watch it Monday with some people as a mini celebration for my girlfriend's birthday.

actually i usually stay 'till the end of the credits. Why? 'Cuz I need to adjust to the lighting and I'm too lazy to get up. Plus, I've seen random extra scenes at the end of A Knight's Tale, The Princess Diaries, and Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secrets, so I tend to make sure there are no extras.

To give you a good idea of how excellent this movie supposedly is, my friend Danielle(who I will get to post on these forums more often) has seen the movie more then 3 times and it's only been out a little more then 5 days. She's slowly becoming obsessed with the movie and has integrated quotes from the movie into her daily life. She also now greets me with an "Arrrr -_o"
Shiver me timbers mate. She's going insane over this movie. "Interesting, that's very interesting."
*laughs*
You're evil, Derek, pure evil. And I do not greet you with an Arrrr. :P
You do that.
As for the quotes, you started saying them and I just happened to remember them!! :rasberry:
But yes, I have seen the movie three times in its now sixth day out. I would love to see it again, but don't want to spoil such a good thing now do I? ^_^
But hey, historical movies are never bad for you. :)

Anywho, I just saw this movie and here goes my tiny review:
I love how the movie starts right off the bat. Johnny Depp knows how to get into his role like no other; I mean, look at his other movies like Edward Scisscorhands.
The cursed pirates look quite believeable when they appear in their "true" skeletal form; kinda scary too.
Disney finally branched out of PG and gave us PG-13, meaning, lots more stabbing, explosions, scary stuff, and tons of fighting!
The monkey was a little annoying. What was more annoying was the flow of the movie. The whole drunk scene on the island was irrelevant to the film. Also, sometimes, you thought the movie was over but it just kept going and going. No biggie, just thought the editing wasn't so great at times.
The comedy was outrageous; I couldn't stop laughing.
I loved how they incorporated elements from the actual attraction; i.e. the theme song, the dog with the key in his mouth, the quote "dead men tell no tales," and any others I might of missed.
This was one of Disney's greatest movies ever.
I give it a 9/10. :D
Chrissy
07-16-2003, 03:49 PM

Get ready for the sequel! :)
With Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean doing extremely well at the box office, the studio is already talking of setting sail on a sequel to the feature.
In anticipation of the film's success, Disney had made sequel arrangements with such key cast members as Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, as well as with the behind-the-scenes duo of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski.
The studio has also begun talks with "Pirates" writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio about drafting a sequel, though no specific story line has yet been set.

Disney Sets Sail on 'Pirates' Sequel
Wednesday, July 16, 2003; 2:05 AM
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Eager to unearth more buried treasure now that "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" raised its flag high at the box office this past weekend, the Walt Disney Co. is already talking of setting sail on a sequel to the theme park ride-inspired feature.
In anticipation of the film's success, Disney had already made sequel arrangements with such key cast members as Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, as well as with the behind-the-scenes duo of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski. And the studio has also begun talks with "Pirates" scribes Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio about drafting a sequel, though no specific story line has yet been set.
Since its opening last Wednesday, "Pirates" has earned more than $78 million, including a $46.6 million opening-weekend take that easily won last weekend's box office battle.
