Well, I don't believe in it. I think it's a pile of crap.

Wanted to hear other people's opinions though.

Where's the option for "this is the dumbest shit I've ever heard and I'm embarrassed there's a thread asking for opinions on it"?

What I was wondering also.

The date was never meant to be the "end of the world". It just got blown way out of proportion and eventually was made into a really bad movie.

I was talking to my friends yesterday about this, and apparently there were some major things wrong with this whole end of the world being in the winter thing. I think it went something along the lines of the fact that for one, the Mayans had predicted like, several of these, and that it wouldn't really be the end of the world as we knew it, permanently. I think there was something else about how the Mayans actually had different calendars, and as such the end of the world should have actually been some time ago.

I may be mistaken about both of those things. But yeah, I don't believe it. I mean, if it's true, then whatever. But, I'm not having it, and I'm convinced most people would agree with me on that.

Welp, beat me to it.

In other news, only ~6 months until we stop hearing about it and wait for the next doomsday philosophy.

And the History Channel will have to find something else to make specials on.

Also the fact that the concept of leap years wasn't in the Mayan calendar and if it's factored in, the actual end of the calendar (I refuse to call it end of the world) happened late last year (I'm not sure on when it happened, but it did so don't quote me on it)

Dammit, I missed the end? And it was gonna be so fun... I hear my cousin Bob was gonna bring his famous bean dip...

It's ok man, I missed it too :(
And I was gonna drive around in a monster truck naked, blaring Kashmir - Led Zeppelin over some massive speakers while lighting people on fire! It was gonna be so fun!!

EDIT: No, scratch that. I just realised that this isn't a calendar conversion, it's just a linear measurement of elapsed time from the creation of the mayan calendar to when it expires (and is subsequently reset, seriously, it's like all these end-is-nigh people haven't used a calendar before). So the end of the calendar is still December 21, 2012. Party at the end of the world is back on!

They already found a mayan calender that goes beyond 2012.

'Nuff said.

This entire end of the world argument really fucks me off. It's like going up to someone who hasn't been taught the concept of time; teaching them about seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months; telling them that there are 12 months in a year; and subsequently watching them rip their own hair out and sacrifice goats on the last day of the last month because the world's going to end.

If you believe the world is going to end in 2012 you are a mindless drone. Do some research on Mayan culture and realize they sacrificed people for no apparent reason and poisoned their own water source by doing what....Dumping the bodies they killed in it.

Just to play devils advocate here, the Mayans weren't the only one to predict this. There were a few other like, oracles who have made remarkabley similar predictions. Just to throw a curveball into this. Everyone us on the same page and that's boring :P

Hey, remember Y2K? Didn't happen.
Yeah, the Mayan calendar predicted stuff, but guess what? They discovered sequels to the calendar. More than 7000 years worth. And a room with instructions on how to make a calendar.
No matter what you believe, THE WORLD IS NOT ENDING IN A HELL OF A LONG TIME!
So everybody, CALM YOUR FUCKING FARM!
THE WORLD IS NOT ENDING.

Will
06-13-2012, 12:52 AM
Well, not only that, but they re-examined the calendar, and figured out that the end of the calendar actually corresponded to a point in time a few years ago. So, if the world really was going to end, we'd've noticed it by now. Heh.

Why can't it end? I mean we are kind of the brink right now. It sounds fucked up and pessimistic but I wouldn't put it past the human race to blow the shit out of ourselves. And maybe it won't happen December 21st but I mean we're wrong move and we're slightly boned

I've heard rumors that the Earth is very resilient. I have a feeling it'll be around until the Sun expands and eats us up in 5 billion years.

And December 21, 2012 was supposed to be an end of an era, not the end of the world.

There's every chance of that happening. That could even happen tomorrow. But the dude was asking about the whole (Mayan, I assume) 2012 phenomenon, which is just not going to happen. Now I'll be really mad if WW3 breaks out in December. Not cause we'll all die, but cause of all the dickheads who are gonna be like "da mayans totes called it!!1!"

And December 21, 2012 was supposed to be an end of an era, not the end of the world.

As I said in a previous post, scientists re-examined the calendar and determined that the correct end-date for the 13th segment of the calendar was a few years ago, considering that the Mayan calendar didn't account for leap days/years.

To be fair, while the end of the world bullshit is clearly that, bullshit. The Y2K thing, was a real concern. But you know, they fixed the computers to you know, handle it. So there's that.

I chose for I'm not sure.

Why? Well, this piece of rock can end on every single day. Nothing special about the 21st of December this year.

With that said, no, the 2012 myth is not true. In fact, it's pure money gaining.

The truth of the Y2K was a very minor, inconsequential concern, blown far far far out of proportion. People were getting panicked about electronic components that had no clock or computers within them at all. The fact that Y2K made the news to start with was bullshit, regardless of the kernel of truth within it. It was exaggerated by people's general ignorance about how technology worked. Y2K is definitely deserving of the bullshit category.

There's always a chance it could get all fucked. What I know for sure is that we have until 2050 before shit gets FUCKED FOREVER. So I'd start worrying about that.
