To scale, this earthquake was two times less intense than the 9.1 Sumatra Quake.

The tsunami is expected to hit California in 45 minutes to an hour. The wave will be 6 feet by that time.

How did you come to that conclusion? It's been said that this earthquake has possibly shifted Earth's axis for entire 10 cm and that could have a shitload of long-term effects on life on the Earth.

And btw, you have to remember that Japan is the best prepared country in the world for this kind of disasters. I can't even imagine the causalities and the damage if an earthquake of this magnitued happened anywhere near any other place with high population and highly developed infrastructure.

The world is really changing. It's like every month, there's an earthquake or any other calamities. It's still fresh what happened to Queensland, New Zealand and now Japan. It's just scary. O.O

There have always been things like that in the past, but now there's almost 7 billion people on the Earth and we live in literally every corner of the world so the effects are more prominent now than they were 200 years ago when there was barely 1 billion people. Plus now you have the media to find out about things like this, while 200 years ago, people i Europe would probably have no idea that something like this happened in Japan.

Each whole number increase is a tenfold increase in energy released. So a 9.1 releases 200% more energy than an 8.9, I believe.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:RichterFreqEnergyGraph-en.svg

Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude; in terms of energy, each whole number increase corresponds to an increase of about 31.6 times the amount of energy released, and each increase of 0.2 corresponds to a doubling of the energy released.

South America better bunker down, that tsunami is coming for them next apparently.

A 7.5 China earthquake killed anywhere between a quarter to three quarters of a million.
9.1 Sumatra earthquake killed 230,000.
A 7.8 China earthquake killed 235,500.
The 7.0 Haiti earthquake killed 200,000 according to Haiti and anywhere between 25,000-90,000 from other sources.
In 1923 a 7.9 earthquake hit Japan and killed 142,000.
A 7.3 in Turkmenistan killed 110,000

Compare all that to this 8.9 and there's only 137 causalities so far (with 500 missing, 750 injured), and that's incredible news.

I've seen a few blog posts and on Twitter, some people are blaming the US for this, I guess we used a super weapon (HAARP).

EDIT: Just saw the news ticker on CNN, 200-300 bodies have been found so far. My bad. Just woke up, I'm kind of behind on this news.

Still a pretty low number, all things considered. That number is from the tsunami, as well, I would wager to bet that most of the injured is from the earthquake, and the deaths/missing is from the tsunami.

The 200-300 figure I got earlier was just in one region, apparently, so my bad on that, again. They're still having problems with that nuclear power plant, as well.

I just read that they fixed the problems with the power plant and that everything is OK over there.

Yeah, most dead/missing definitely are from the tsunami. The expected death toll is "several thousand", so they probably believe that the majority of the missing people is actually alive but they can not get into touch with them due to the entire infrastructure being annihilated.

I think that majority of the buildings in Japan from after the WWII are built to support earthquakes of high magnitudes and that's probably what saved tens of thousands of lives.

Fox News is reporting that the Japanese are deliberately releasing radioactive vapor into the air to ease pressure on that Nuclear power plant. I don't think it's completely safe yet, but it sounds like it's getting there. Still experiencing aftershocks, and yeah, they just confirmed that it's expected to top 1000, which isn't anything surprising (but sad).

It's weird, you watch CNN, it's non-stop Japan coverage. Same with MSNBC. HLN is covering Mel Gibson's court case and the iPad 2, and Fox News was talking about something in Georgia or something before they switched back to Japan.

Good for you, CNN.

There is also a Tsunami that is or has already happened in Hawaii, west coast of California and maybe in Organ's west coast. I first found out about this this morning on the news. I hope everything recovers also and that people evacuated and are safe from these two disaster climates. Was the earthquake in Japan part of that Tsunami? It happened in the Pacific Ocean.

The earthquake off the coast of Japan caused the tsunami that reached Hawaii and the west US coast

I consider myself to be among the people who think something really fucked up is happening to the world right now. In the past few years we've seen increased seismic and volcanic activity world-wide which has devestated entire sections of continents, let alone countries. This for one scares the hell out of me. I can only thank my lucky stars that I live in an area that isn't affected too much by natural disasters.

I have 2 friends that now live in California, and my roommate is on spring break there visiting a girl. All 3 have said it's basically business as usual, nothing serious happened. I told one of my friends about the coast guard that got swept out into the sea trying to take pictures, and he said that happens a lot, it's usually tourists though.

I believe they (Japan) had either 10-15 minutes warning after the quake about the tsunami. Past natural diasters have shaped how prepared they are in situations like this, as evidence by the extremely low death toll. 1,000 is a thousand too many, don't get me wrong, but compared to other events like this in the past, it's INCREDIBLE. Everyone on this planet could gain a lot of insight by looking at how they prepare for shit like this.

Oh, and that nuclear power plant? Yeah, it's about to have a meltdown. Area around the place is 20 times more radioactive than normal, and they keep expanding the evacuation area. It's only a matter of time, and if that happens, a lot of people will feel the effects of that. Even those of us in the United States. I think that's the worst situation out of all of this, really. It's causing quite the uproar in the US, apparently, about not building any more nuclear plants, and I guess Obama just came out today and said we need new energy resources to replace gasoline, and his answer is nuclear energy or something.

What strange times we live in. I think they're calling this the 5th biggest quake since 1900? And obviously one of the biggest for Japan, period. No matter how advanced the technology, it really comes down to the kindness in the hearts of the Japanese, and they have that in spades from everything I've heard, and not just from this tragedy. I wish Americans were more like the Japanese.

My heart aches for those affected by this. Maybe it's because I really have a soft spot for Japan, or maybe it's because I was really young, but 9/11 didn't even impact me this way. It's heart breaking and I can't quite explain why. This couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of people. My dad is especially tore up about this, himself having visited Japan multiple times due to being a high ranking employee at the Nissan plant in Dechard, TN and having many, many friends that live there and are good friends of the family, some of which my parents haven't heard from yet.

I feel like crying.

Thanks for the detailed response.

I was reading up on the nuclear plant, and I thought it said that it was a newer model that really doesn't have significant fallout if it melts down. I later saw some videos that said that was not the case. That it could be many times worse than Chernobyl, which is depressing to say the least.

It seems like nuclear power is the way of the future, so I hope this doesn't drag down its development, but it sucks when disasters happen like this. Hopefully they find a way to contain everything before it melts down.

It'd be nice if disasters like this would just take out the scum of the Earth instead of ruining lives of those undeserving of the suffering, but unfortunately reality is just random shit happening to random people.

Yes, I know what you mean.

But just to be cynical for the sake of being cynical you have to realize more than 1 in a million people ARE idiots, and if that is the case, you more than likely have a lot of idiots working at places they have no business.

But within a million people you probably have enough who are actually qualified as well, or at least aren't total idiots. :P

Apparently nuclear power also kills less people than the production of other power sources out there anyway. So there's that too. Most of the time it seems like the two main arguments against it are people being hung up over Chernobyl happening again, even though that was supposed to have been because of a clusterfuck of mistakes as much as anything, or because the first word of the phrase "nuclear power" is the same as the first word of "nuclear weapons".

Um. Anyway?

Japan just upgraded the quake to a 9.1

The current total of nuclear reactors about to enter meltdown, near there, or very likely is at 6 now, with one already having a leak. If this was to be fixed right now suddenly, it would still be one of the worst nuclear disasters in history.

Sadly, I don't think this is going to magically fix itself. I think Japan will remember the month of March for years to come. More specifically, thirty years (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEMZoFV_1-M&feature=player_embedded). Caesium has a half-life of 30 years, emits gamma rays, and is one of the most reactive elements and is highly explosive when it comes in contact with water.
