Veteran comic actor Leslie Nielsen, star of Airplane! and The Naked Gun, has died at the age of 84.

He died in hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he was being treated for pneumonia, his agent John S Kelly said.

Canadian-born Nielsen started out as a serious actor but in 1980, his role as a hapless doctor in the disaster spoof film Airplane! made him a comic star.

In all, he appeared in more than 100 films and had a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

"With his friends and his wife by his side, he just fell asleep and passed away," his nephew Doug Nielsen told the AFP news agency

I'm quite upset about this. He was great in movies like Dracula Dead And Loving It, Naked Gun, Scary Movie 3&4 and Creepshow. One of my favourite comedy actors of all time.

RIP

Yeah, it's a shame. Such a legend and one of the funniest comic actors ever. He will be missed on screen.

Incredible actor. One of the best of our generation, if you wanna see his serious roles check out Forbidden Planet. R.I.P.

I could really use a wish right now. And I would use it to bring back Leslie Nielson.

I was listening to NPR at work last night and a little snippet about his death was talked about. I stopped what I was doing and kind of just sat back and thought about it. I honestly really did love his work, ESPECIALLY the Naked Gun movies. I remember being a little kid and watching them with my dad. Gut-wrenching news, especially after (unrelated) we just lost Peter Christopherson of Coil/Throbbing Gristle fame.

It would seem God needs more creativity in Heaven. He took two of the best.

I'll never forget how hard I laughed watching the first movie in the "Naked Gun" series. Classic. :x
