View Full Version : Respecting Other People

Greetings LPA!

With the recent leak/release of Linkin Park's newest album "A Thousand Suns", there has been a lot of activity, excitement and discussion on these forums over the band's dramatic shift in sound, and many of our valued members have been very passionate about their opinions and feelings towards the music as a whole. However; while most of the discussion has been well thought out and respectful, we have also noticed a steady decline in the mood of some the new threads, and we felt we should address this issue head on before it becomes a greater problem.

Over the past few days there has been a increasingly negative reaction towards any member who states their dislike for A Thousand Suns or who posts a review of the album that is not favorable or 100% positive. Replies to said posts have been everything from obscene pictures, telling certain members to leave the boards, or even quoting Mike from the new album with the often used "try and catch up motherf***a". This behavior is not only casting a negative impression on the site as a whole, but also completely unacceptable in general.

I must kindly ask all of you to remember (as a whole) that the new album will not be everyone's cup of tea, and that not every Linkin Park fan will appreciate the new direction the band has taken with their sound. While we understand there have been many trolls signing up to call the new album "[insert slur here]" and many others who have expressed their distaste in an unintelligent fashion, there have also been many very intelligent members, with well worded opinions, who have been attacked solely for not thinking ATS is the "greatest album ever".

This needs to change immediately. Starting now, I must ask our ATS-Loving members to please try and respect the opinions/criticism of those who don't like the album. While there is certainly nothing wrong with holding a friendly debate between view-points...when the posts begin to grow disrespectful, that's when our things have gone too far.

Regards,
Derek

I think this is definitely more a message for experienced posters than new members this time. Everyone should really read this...

Agreed Jordan. We've seen a few experienced posters being rude, and that's just not right.

I reckon people who slur Linkin Park's new album on a Linkin Park website, to the point where you have to put [insert slur here] need to grow the fuck up, seriously. No offence intended, but maturity and respect are just common LPA rules and it should be common sense, I reckon. I agree with Jordan, as well, some matured posters I have seen need to take a step back and give respect to those who like don't really like it (like me!). If you don't like it, you don't like it, let's leave it at that. We're all not going to agree on this album.

Yeah, the trolls who say A THOUSAND SUNS IS [homophobic slur] are idiots and will be handled accordingly. However; some smarter people who have said they didn't favor the album have been attacked greatly and that's just not right.

Thanks for posting this. LPA is an awesome site with awesome members, and it should stay that way. :)

I admit I got a bit into a spaz in that one thread but I think I've cooled down. Just the person was annoying me very greatly.

Like, I was attacked for saying I hated Meteora. I mean, that's nothing to be offended over.

I just don't like it when they say "You guys can't seriously like this" or something along those lines. I'll respect them otherwise :).

I'm pretty sure this concerns me, and the path of destruction I've been on since the album leaked (and especially early this morning). I've been here for longer than anyone that's posted in this thread so far (except Derek), and I should have known better. So, for that, I apologize.

But, when I read that post you made Derek, I'm thinking of a few other "experienced" members with different colored names as well.

Derek

Believe it or not, you weren't the reason I made this post lol. Either way, thank you for committing to being more respectful. It truly does have to be a group effort from all of us :).

I would also kind of like to point out, that we now have a few people in the LPUMBs mocking the site for the way a few people have, I guess, treated them, for lack of better words at the moment. It's a shame too, since that will give this site a bad rep. I wouldn't wish that upon the site at all, since this is the one fansite I actually enjoy going on and postwhoring.

I've noticed this too. Hopefully we can change that.

Yeah . . . =/

It has really turned me off from posting in the LPU . . .kinda makes me happy that some people are actually NOT going to be coming back for LPUX, which means we won't have that kind of attitude with the new people.

And I just want to take the time for everyone reading this to know that if you ever have a problem with a member of the forums, please report the post and we'll always take care of it. We love all of our members here and always want to ensure the best experience. Thanks!

This probably pertains to me. Although I try to be intelligent when the person I'm responding to attempts to be intelligent, I'm sure somewhere I got sloppy and slipped up a bit. That and I just have this feeling that it's about me. If so, apologies. If not, I'll resume my normal bit.

The fact that you didn't deny that I was involved means I did have a part in it though. That's all I needed to know.

Apologies.

This is basically just you admitting that you were a part of it without Derek having to explicitly say anything.

Well I wasn't sure. I've been posting a lot recently, and I didn't know if I had slipped up or not. I thought I answered intelligent people intelligently and unintelligent people unintelligently, but I'm not sure if I kept it up.

Louis

Well, the point is not to feed the people who are being unintelligent about their response to the album. By responding negatively to them you waste your time, give people the impression that everyone on the site is like that, and ultimately it doesn't show them that their response to A Thousand Suns was unreasonable or at least not reasonably conveyed.

The point is, guys, that we have to stop treating each other in such a manner as to say that because we can't bash people's opinions we have to find other ways to get a harsh point across. That's how it has been on these forums recently. No one really has been outright breaking any rules but people are getting edgy and disrespectful, and it's getting to the point where our reputation as a reliable and friendly fan site is suffering. I mean, for crying out loud, it's just an album! Some people will love it, some people will hate it, and some won't give a flying fuck about it! Some people will convey what they feel reasonably and give good explanations, others will just have those comments that are like, "Haters gonna hate" and they won't reason through it, and others will just not care enough to say anything. Regardless of where people stand on the album, or on anything in general, there is absolutely no reason to disrespect anyone. Even if someone disrespects you, you've got no reason to disrespect them back. Two wrongs don't make a right, and there's always the possibility that retaliation will receive more punishment than instigation.

We could list people by name, but we won't. We feel that with the post that Derek made, people will know who they are and adjust accordingly. This is a big time for the LPA. We're getting a lot of traffic, and a lot of attention (keep in mind that the band might even be viewing what's going on here, they know we exist!). Now's not the time, nor is it ever the time, to talk to people without being respectful and mindful of what they think. It's really not hard to convey your disagreement without being an asshole.

And honestly, if you have a problem with someone's post, then ignore it! People who write posts that most people find heinous or annoying or stupid...they feed off of the attention! Don't give attention to someone who is probably seeking a negative reaction, because that's when things get riled up and things get said that shouldn't be said.

All in all, be mindful of what you say. If you've got nothing nice to say, then don't say it at all.
Thank you.

You're 100% right with this. But for a lot of people, it's hard not to respond to someone who disrespects you. Whether it's on LPA, Facebook, real life, or wherever. The boards will never be perfect where everyone is Mother Tarisa. That, to me, is the truth.

I know it's hard not to respond, but if you don't, you make things a lot better and you just come off as the better person. If someone says something disrespectful, the staff will take care of it. If you respond with something disrespectful, you'll have it worse. And yes, the boards will never be perfect and not everyone is going to be completely 100% respectful, but that doesn't give you the right, nor should it make you feel like you have the right, to be disrespectful or to return disrespect. It doesn't make it okay.

I totally agree that it's not okay. But it's human nature. It'll be hard to simply stop.

I understand that. But you need to try. People can place themselves above that and control what they say. We're not asking that you stop being human. We ask that you just think a little bit more when it comes to what you say.

I also just want to take a moment out quick, to please let everyone know that if they are having an issue with a certain member, or the forums as a whole, to please contact an admin or moderator to get the problem rectified if possible. Over the past few weeks, there have been some untrue things said about us on certain LP fan sites and the LPU, and while these comments are sparse, any negative comment is a cause for concern as we wish to make sure we are the doing the best jobs that we can.

So please, if you have a problem do not hesitate to let us know. We cannot resolve a situation or moderate efficiently if we are not aware of any issues. You are our best help.
