You know, Rep. Joe Barton apologized to BP. And now is back petaling and apologizing for apologizing
Seems the guy is becoming an official bs apologist. Either way though I'm with Todd.
Fuck BP.
While I agree with fuck BP, I've also got to say I'm disappointed with Barack Obama's approach to the whole issue. BP havn't been known as British Petrolium in years and his comments have created alot of Brit-bashing in recent weeks. Over here there are alot of people who are outraged by it all and it has even brought into question a dent in the special relationship Britian and America have. Also comparing the whole thing to 9/11? That was a bit much.
At the end of the day though what matters is getting everything cleaned up as quickly and as efficiantly as possible. This is a catestrophic enviornmental disaster that will most likely have lasting negative affects for years to come.

Pretty much this.

The problem is, what some people don't realize across the sea (and I don't mean this in a bad way) is that no matter what Obama does back home here in America, there are some people who are never going to give him credit. It wouldn't matter if he swims down to the sea and plugs it with his own body, people would still accuse him of not doing enough.
This is the issue that will ruin Obama's presidency. It doesn't matter what else he accomplishes past this point, people will always say America (and Obama) should've done more.

He compared it to 9/11? Wow. You've got to love political theater.
Anyway, this whole disaster hits close to home for me, because I grew up on the Gulf Coast. To see those pristine beaches covered with oil disgusts me to no end. Fuck BP? Yeah, sure. But fuck Washington in its shady, bribe-taking ass, too. There's a lot of blame to go around for this incident.

Kick that dude's ass.
Its horrible to see, and I don't see how hard it is to make those tanks that hold the oil out of the hardest shit 'round.
BP should be swimming in that shit, see how they like it.
I personally don't think BP is taking the problem seriously enough, when their CEO or president is taking fucking trips to see some boat race, when he should have his ass living in his office working to fix the problem.
The environmental toll this is going to have on the Gulf of Mexico is sickening. According to an article today, they are saying worst case scenario is 4.2 million gallons a day pouring into the Gulf. Are you fucking kidding me? They should have a fail safe system already in place from the get go. If they are going to have a rig, have the wells already drilled to act as the back up to their existing system.
And all this does for me is give me another reason why more money should be put into developing alternative fuel sources.

The lack of quick fixing for good will ruin BP.
The oil amongst the beaches in the Gulf is terrible.
To compare this to 9/11 is a terrible measurement. Exxon Valdez is would be a better example of comparison.
Sucks.

Tony Hayward is an asshole, that much is obvious. The problem is though, there's no point in everyone attacking him left, right and centre because it just adds more pressure on his shoulders which will no doubt be a distraction from actually solving the problem. Barack Obama has done nothing but place blame on Tony Hayward which is just stirring up a witchhunt - And I've got to say, with the way people have attacked him for just about everything he's done since he came into office, you'd think he'd have taken a more suttle and professional approach. Now is the time for everyone to be pulling together to solve the issue, the time for criticism is later.
Also you need to take into consideration that those statistics are based on a worst case scenario, not necessarily what's happening. Either way it's a travesty.

And I quote:
The figure is the highest yet to surface regarding the leaking oil well. At the disaster's outset, BP claimed the leak was about 1,000 barrels a day, a number it later revised to 5,000 and then much higher. BP told the House Energy and Commerce Committee that the worst-case scenario was 60,000 barrels (2.5 million gallons) a day, lower than what the document states.
The document, submitted in May, maintains the 60,000 barrel estimate, but stipulates that if the "blowout preventer and wellhead are removed and if we have incorrectly modeled the restrictions, the rate could be as high as 100,000 barrels a day."
Markey said the document "raises very troubling questions about what BP knew and when they knew it."

It's just that if Obama doesn't come down hard on him tons are going to be upset and say he isn't doing anything. Then when he does come down on them people will say he's not doing enough.

This is probably the single greatest atrocity by mankind, ever.
It may not be human lives being lost, but the destruction of ecosystems, loss of marine, bird and mammal life has probably never been seen on a scale anywhere near this. And you know what? A life is a life, human or not. This is an absolute tragedy.
My one hope from this is that maybe it could be the slap in the face the world need about our abuse of resources.
Why the fuck do we use oil? Enough sunlight falls on Australia alone in one day to power the entire world for two years.
And we use oil and coal? Get fucked.
Ultimately though there's one thing we can blame for this. Money. BP's greed and desire for money. Welcome to the priorities of 21st century mankind people.
Fuck society.

In summer we sure do, probably enough in half a day.

Correct.

Assuming this is true - which I don't know if it is or not - you're missing the part where we don't have the technology to efficiently use the power. Sure, Australia could have that much sunlight, but unless we have the devices to store and use that power, then it's pointless. As far as I know, current technologies aren't efficient enough - for example, you could cover your car in solar panels, and that still wouldn't be nearly enough.
I'm really hoping this is the turning point for when we move away from oil. Greed only lasts for so long.

Half of the Australia is desert, and there it gets freaking hot, why not put a trillion things there?
You know what really pisses me off about this whole BP issue, is that instead of using the millions of dollars it has on helping clean up the situation, they just used it for ads so we can feel pity for them.

I'm wondering how much longer it will take for oil to reach Florida's eastern coast. What a wondrous occasion that will be!

I've taken two trips to Louisiana (I live in Texas) to help with clean-up efforts.
I highly suggest anyone, regardless of location in our good ol' US of A (awkward wording thanks to that competition in Random Chat), to go down and help at least for a day.

But if we spent some money developing solar technology, rather than digging deeper and deeper for oil, we could have the technology.
Even now, with limited investment, efficiency is increasing. I'll try and chase up some real figures though, so you don't just have to take my word for it...

Dropping like flies -- excellent.
This oil spill is a good lesson for all these money addicted idiots.
Is more money worth killing millions of animals, sea creatures and the environment?
If he wants more money, and killing the environment is part of getting more money, then he should fucking die.

I think what BP has done is extremely awful and they should be (the owners) imprisoned for all the destruction it has caused. On a brighter side, there are only two type of birds that can handle that type of stress - pelicans and penguins. Nonetheless, I'm still boycotting their petrol stations.

Sorry if this has already been posted. I just read an article (http://www.helium.com/items/1882339-doomsday-how-bp-gulf-disaster-may-have-triggered-a-world-killing-event) on how the spill may be 'the catalyst' for mass extinctions as seen in the geological past.
Worth reading. Comments?

I once read a head line that said "Cataclysmic world ending oil spill* or some such. anyone know anything about that? I think it said in the article something about extinction of ocean life and then people..

07-20-2010, 07:13 AM
yeah but is it true?
I'd say no. Yes, it's a terrible occurrence that should have been and could have been avoided completely, but it's not going to cause extinction of ocean life on a scale that will greatly affect mankind. And yes, I know everyone on the coast is being affected by it, and the oil will continue to affect the marine and animal life of the area for years to come, but this does not signal the end of mankind. As a matter of fact, the leak has been stopped, if only temporarily, so that they can come up with a much more permanent solution to the problem.
P.S. BP fellates flaccid Equus Asinus genitals.
