I this this is a huge even that's not getting enough media attention. The Large Hadron Collider is going to be switched on tomorrow. Will it suck us all into a giant black hole or provide evidence about the creation of the universe? Who the fuck knows, we'll see on October 21 when the collision of the particles will take place.
If you've never heard anything about it and are wondering what the hell I'm taling about here's a quick Q/A for you: Link (http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Big-Bang-Machine-Your-Questions-Answered-On-Large-Hadron-Collider-And-Particle-Physics/Article/200809215095353?lpos=World%2BNews_5&lid=ARTICLE_15095353_Big%2BBang%2BMachine%253A%2BY our%2BQuestions%2BAnswered%2BOn%2BLarge%2BHadron%2 BCollider%2BAnd%2BParticle%2BPhysics)

My advice is borrow a lot of money from all you friends and have a hell of a fun tonight because there might not be tomorrow.
(although if there actually is tomorrow, don't ask me how to get the money to pay them back )
Yeah, now seriously, any thoughts?

The scientist have full convidence that nothing bad will happen, but how can they know  We'll see tomorrow. I think the sky will turn white and then we're dead.
Anyone who believes this will be the end of the world is an idiot.

Yeah, I think I agree. If scientists had aborted their experiments whenever someone thought it would end the world we'd still be in stone age now.
The only thing I'm afraid of is that this will turn out to be a major waste of money and that they will find nothing. Creating a mini black hole or two would be so cool even if they lasted for only a couple of nanoseconds haha :)

It's very exaggerated, but there is still a possibility, albeit very small.
Reading the British media, the more astute papers have wrote a lot about it. One thing that stood out about it though, is that the scientists have said it's completely safe, based on their knowledge, and yet, the whole point of this experiment is to traverse into the unknown, and we have no idea what exactly will happen.
I personally don't believe the end is nigh, but I feel that now, there's no point in scientists trying to appease our worries, when they don't know what could happen.
I think they were originally going to start the experiment last spring, which was around the time when I first heard about it. Casey made a good point last night. It's very very unlikely anything will happen to that end, as far as we know anyway, but yeah, the stakes are kind of high when you think about what might happen if something does go wrong.

I don't think we're lucky enough to have our world ending in a split second when we won't even know what's happening. If the world does come to an end any time soon it's probably gonna be caused by wars and nuclear weapons.
If something goes wrong, to the effect where the world would be put in danger of ending, it's not as if anyone would know about it. I guarantee something like that would happen so fast that no one would ever know.

Is that just wishful thinking? :P

No. I read an article about this last night and proceeded to find out more about it, and I read that, in an unlikely event, the Collider could turn everything into a theoretical... erm, thing, for lack of a better word, called strange matter, and from the description, it seems as though something like this would happen so fast that no one would notice.

The program has been started since 45 minutes. We seem to be safe for the moment

I see. Well that would probably be the best way for the world to end as far as comfort goes.

We're definitely in a black hole or some parallel dimension now because I managed to wake up at 10am with no problem

It's the end of the world as we know it *sings*.
Nah. I never was too worried. I never really followed the experiment enough to really 'know' what was going on, but I mean...a black hole...inside of our planet!? Who'd say no to that? That's hella-cool! I mean. If we survive it, kick ass! If we don't, we won't be able to blame anyone afterwards anyhow. So what's the fuss? :)
Chris.

We weren't going to die today anyways. Apparently nobody has completely read up on this .
The collision wasn't happening today. They were simply sending the atoms in one direction to see how well they can be contained. The actual collision will happen next month and THAT is what everyone is scared will create a black hole. Next month they will send the atoms barreling towards each other.

Well I knew but I didn't want to spoil the fun :P
It supposed to happen on Oct 21. And since my birthday is on 22nd I'll have an excuse to get drunk like shit one day earlier! Long live black holes!

I hope the Swiss/Frenchies have enough crowbars.

Which is funny.

I mean, err, this is stupid. We're in the Matrix. Get over it, guys.

It's not going to make a black hole.
If it did, we wont know.
It's not going to make a black hole.
If it did, we wont know.
Obviously you didn't read any of the articles. It would create a micro black hole which would disappear so quickly no one would ever know it was actually there aside from all the computer equipment designed to detect things like that. It would have absolutely no effect on anything at all.
Theazninvasion68
09-13-2008, 08:28 AM
I know it'll make a micro black hole, I meant a Big black hole that'll eat us up.
Pretty much, Im sayin that we should have no fears trying the LHC, really. As you said, They would disappear.
Oh, OK, I'm sorry, then. Sometimes your posts confuse the hell out of me.

Lets rush two atoms together inside of a metal box and re-create the big bang. And then look inside the box and see if there's a micro universe in there.. okay.. maybe not. haha.

Are..are we the resulting product of such an experiment?! =O
In theory Yes.
We could be the experiment of super-humans who created a micro-universe for us organisms to live in. However, the Super-humans have created other organisms to evolve and push the limits of science to the brink and then some, and travel and explore the micro universe while the super-humans just sit backand watch!
Oh wait....

The end of the world is delayed for two months. There was some malfunction in the collider or something
Theazninvasion68

LHC =\= End of the world.
LHC = Possibility of the end of the world.
Is it known exactly when the collisions begin now?
El Muerto
09-25-2008, 06:16 PM
Not really. The accelerator will be shut down until spring, so I think the first collisions could be expected at the end of spring/beginning of summer.
Oh, I didn't realise it was being shut down for that long, thanks.
Theazninvasion68
