View Full Version : Cursing on the next album

Does anyone think there will be swearing on the next album? They had songs recorded before HT (Step Up, High Voltage) with swearing on them, so it's not like they can't or don't want to. I guess it probably depends on how they feel about it. Or something.
Who cares if they curse or not?

I think the point of the thread was to kick off a discussion, it wasn't like "LP better do some cursing or I'll be mad!"

Just because they didn't on their albums doesn't mean anything. Listen to any live version of A Place for My Head, or pretty much any live LP show for that matter. I think they talked about it a long time ago, like they don't have to swear on an album to make an impact or make it meaningful or something like that.

yeah, I totally knew about them doing it at their live shows. I just wanted to know if anyone thought that they would do it on this new one. I could care less if they did or not. HT and Meteora are kickass albums, and I just found it worth noticing that they did it in songs that weren't on major albums. (They did it on CC, but censored it on Reanimation...) it doesn't take away from the music, or the impact of the music, because Mike and Chester are amazing lyricists. They don't need to swear. And if they did, it wouldn't take away from their impact.
Just wanted to know what everyone's opinion was.

Personally, I don't think it matters. Cursing doesn't necessarily make a song better or worse. It's just emphasis and slang, mostly.
It'd certainly be interesting, though. But I'd rather have an album cover not tainted with an Explicit Lyrics sign.

If this album is as different as everyone says its gonna be I don't see any reason why there can't be a few swears here and there.

shit i almost forgot. remember mike once said in,most probably, an LPU chat that there are cursing in the lyrics?
I don't care if they swear or don't. It shouldn't really matter. They'll swear if they feel they have to & if they think it's necessary, and as long as it belongs it shouldn't be a problem.
they didnt need to before - wh should they need to now? i think LPs lyrics are 'better' than F this and F that. but if they chose to swear its their call at the end of the day. i dont think it matters that much to be honest, it just shows to me that they havnt put as much effort into the song writting phase than hybrid theory and dare i say it, meteora. if they go down the cursing route, its the easy ways out i think (thats my own opinion) they can do much better i think. i'll listen to them whatever comes out lol

Mike cussed in FM...he did it for emphasis and it was fine. I actually liked it. However, even though LP has recorded songs with cursing in them before like some of the B-Sides and such, neither of the two main/core albums have had cursing.
Hybrid Theory had NONE and it was fucking pure ownage. Meteora had none and it was really good.
LP doesn't need it. I'd like to see them try it, but on the flipsyde, I'd like to have them continue tradition and not curse. It's something you can take pride in when promoting LP. I get the question of "Does LP ever curse in their albums?" and I can honestly answer no they don't. I don't want this to change.
LP can make the record of the decade without cursing.
So in summary, I loved it in FM, but LP needs to stay away from it. Chester and Mike have their side projects for that.

stay away from cursing, i say. first of all, they don't need to, second i don't want them to be restricted in their music distribution. i mean, i don't want them to have to change their lyrics for radio. like fort minor's high road, they changed "all that bullshit you talk" into "all that trash that you talk". the song is better with swearing, but if the original had a better word, it needn't lose its impact through censoring.

i just dont want them to curse in lp! in the original album atleast
i just love fm cuz curse words come whr they must
like in where'd you go, it reeli does make an impact
but lp is known for creating impact without curse words and i want them to continue that way (like someone else said)

They don't need to curse... But I suppose it wouldn't matter so much in the screaming parts, I always think that then it adds more impact and doesn't seem outta place.

I don't mind them saying hell, damn, or words like that....when I sing their songs, i substitute words for things like that. lol
but them sayin fuck and stuff would be kinda weird, but not really a big deal

I guess at the end of the day I don't really care as long as the lyrics are good, swearing or not.
If the band were to set out to deliberately write lyrics with no swearing they'd arguably just be restricting their vocabularies. I agree it probably wouldn't be a good idea to fill the album with swearing though, but that's because of repetition, not because I don't want swearing.
I really could care less if they decide to throw in some of that. As long as it's a great, revolutionary LP album like they say it's going to be, I don't care.

as long as the lyrics is good/matured, it really doesnt matter..
There won't be unless its very important to the theme of the song.

Ditto. I really don't think/hope they use expletives. It completely ruins a song's integrity for me.

Yeah, but some artists (I don't know how they get around it) release albums with swearing in them without the Explicit Lyrics sticker on them. And it's not words like 'hell' or damn' or 'ass' but 'shit' and 'fuck.' Two off the top of my head that I know of are Puddle of Mudd's Life on Display in the song Away From Me and Taproot's Blue-Sky Research in the song April Suits.
P.o.M - Away From Me
..So here I am
I don't wanna be by myself
And I think you’re fucking someone else
now im gonna have to find a way
To take the knife out of my back
And how could you leave me
Stranded in a closet full of bones...
Taproot - April Suits
[Chorus:]
Season's change the fallen rain will wash the pain away
Make amends to help understand how to live today
FUCK!
It's not your fault I understand now I'm more a man
........
Choose a life to get me by not a life that passes by
[Chorus]
On we march our April suits
On we march in our April boots
On we fucking march in our April suits,
march in our April boots
I don't know how they could get away with it, but I haven't heard anything been done for it. My point isn't that LP should try and 'hide' the cursing if they could, but other bands got away with it and it didn't stir up controversy (that I know of). The albums do look better without the Parental Advisory sticker on them, because the album covers themselves are works of art, and to taint them with a little b&w logo would suck. So, if it works, they should go with it. If not, no big deal. They're awesome either way, and I'll keep listening to them.

The only song that the word fuck made awsome imo is System Of A Down's cover of The Metro.
i think from hybrid theory a place for my head should've had a couple curses in there i know some people disagree but in the part where mike says "i am so sick of the tention sick of the hunger sick of you acting like i owe you this..." i think hunger should've been replaced with bullshit but thats just what i think

One random swearword on the album would throw it off, and I think that's why they went without it. A lot of the songs may or may not sound better with swearing. They could probably rewrite the album lyrics with every curse in the book, and would fit if all of the songs were like that. But they didn't...
That would be sweet side project... wink wink.
I don't care if bands curse, but I tip my hat to bands that can get through a song without resorting to cursing. It's so pointless if there's no meaning behind it.

I think Where'd YouGo would've made more impact if he didn't say fuck and shit. Also, it's not a curse word, but it would've been way better without "burgers and ribs" lol
Jubble
02-28-2007, 02:48 AM
But somehow the song flows a little better with the 'fuck' and 'shit' included. Depends on the rythm of the music.

Where'd You Go flows REALLY well with the cursing. I am really surprised at how well Mike made it all sound.
Fuck, shit, burgers, ribs...it should all be included. That's one of the best songs he's ever worked on ever. Mike can really REALLY write some good songs man. I have so much respect for him it's unbelievable.

I think Mike and Chaz are underestimated or underappreciated as lyricists. I mean, when you can write a song and think of what they come up with (i.e. 'space odyssey monolithe, twist mic cords to double helixes, etc.'), it's undoubtably something special. They've been given the ability to write such dynamically flowing lyrics, and use past experiences to come up with them. It's truly unbelievable. I find it inspiring. My hats off to them, and I have the utmost respect for them because of it. LPs music truly is moving.
Ok, I'm done.

just being sarcastic, like I don't understand why anyone would just want them cursing just to be cursing. Mike is a storyteller so I'm sure with the freedom that Rubin has kinda put upon them he'll put more emotion to his lines and Chester as well. I mean Chester's been through a lot more these last few years and I'm sure he has some things to say but them just randomly cursing would be pretty dumb.

i wish there was not any in here but u can pre-order the cd on bestbuy.com adn theres the explicit lyrics sign on the page, but theres a edited verison also.

If they curse then so be it. It’s not like I would be shock and say oh my god they said a no no word! its fine by me.
I believe Chester has said he doesn't like to add swearing when he writes music.
Mike is different so he might, but I'm not sure. I can see them cursing in like one song.

Well from what I've picked up there's gonna be some swearing...not anything big like fuck...but damn...and stuff like that...I honestly don't mind it...I'd rather have them curse than water the lyrics down...not that any of their lyrics are bad...but I imagine they could be better with a few...unedited parts in terms of swearing...(I do believe we had a thread about swearing in 2006 and a lot of people said that LP spent more time rewriting lyrics and stuff than anything else....just thought I'd mention that...)

I'm 50/50 on this, but it really does depend on the context of the songs, and if its just little F's & Shites here and there it should be fine.
I mean, we've heard Mike Swear loads of times:
*Reading my Eyes
*Step Up
*And One (interlude)
*High Voltage
*Dedicated
& countless other times on live shows.
I don't think Chester's ever sworn on LP's studio songs. & I'm interested to see what "Given Up" is gonna be like.

i do think that cursing gives the song a special "thing" .. specially if it was a rock song or whatever .. not that i wouldn't listen to a total clean song .. but yeah linkin park seem to go the "no-cursing\clean" way with this new album .. i bet they WILL use some live .. they've always done that .. n I've always enjoyed it =]
but it's what I think anyway .. so who cares ???

Honestly, I couldn't care less. Swearing does nothing, really. Remember we are talking about 4 letter words, Not racist words of anything of that sort. Alot of people use those words day in day out to express themselves, So there's nothing wrong here in my eyes.

Well I am looking forward to the cursing. I think cursing gives a song a certain fierceness. There is just a serious badassity with cursing.

It think it mostly depends on the context and what the message is about more than the word itself. And if they should be censored it won't stop Chester and Mike from swearing on stage.

To all those of you have listened to "Given Up" there is cursing in it ... and for those who haven't ... well now you know :P
Personally, i don't really care if they swear or not but they've been cussing at live shows in comments and in one or two songs in the past.
I think in this day and age its not uncommon to hear swear words anymore because it's become so much of our culture... parents and their banning of the words, no matter how hard they try .... the child would most likely hear it at school or somewhere else anyways.. so why bother ? ~

i remember in an interview a couple of years back with rob on the subject of swearing in songs.he said something alng the lines of not swearing because it feels like a cop out.it never really bothered me at all and never will whether they swear or not.i feel though like them cussing is like the brake away from the commercialness they've become acustomed to and have realized and need to break free of it.i really think this album will have its 'ready made singles' and the rest will sound a little differnt.not to different but enough to put thereminds at easy that they have done enough to not be put in the same category as pop bands like nickelback and hinder.

personally I want to hear Chester say "fuck" or anything else because it's kinda different to hear in a studio song. Plus I've seen them 6 times and I know they cuss live. Like on Frat Party at the pankake festival he said fuck you or something like that at the end of A place for my head but they bleeped it out! on a dvd

They SO can make it without swearing, which they proved. So far, they've become recognizable for radiating powerfulness and strong emotions without "fuck" and stuff. "Fuck" is just too much, I feel that while typing it. It just sucks out the fullness of the rest of the lyrics. Some words should be kept inside and curse words are definitely some of those.

I totally agree with that! One of the reasons I like LP so much is that they've said so much in their song without foul language, and I think that's a skill not all bands can acquire.
I still think that "Given Up" is gonna be a great song despite some cursing in it... good thing they kept it to a minimum

The amount of swearing on the album is fine and realistic and I'm satisfied with it. I just wouldn't be happy if they cussed like Fred in a Limp Bizkit record, but they didn't pass the line. Because swearing too much makes you seem un-intelligent, but everyone uses it sparingly.
I think they just cursed on the new record to show that they can...lol Hey we can write a country ballad, we can write a death metal song, hell we can even cuss a few times if we want to, it's all in the perfect mix...haha They want to show how they have no limits on this record.
