A two-month-old boy born with two left arms has successfully undergone surgery to remove one of them, doctors in Shanghai say.

What do you think about that?
What do you think about that?
I think a third arm can come in pretty damn handy at times.
I guess it's for the best. If it wasn't removed the kid would have had the piss ripped out of him while growing up.

I'm just glad the kid's apparently okay now. He had an experienced doctor, or at least the hospital had dealt with similar cases, i.e. conjoined twins. It would have been awkward having a third arm.

yeah i thought of the same thing, glad the kid is ok now though:thumbsup:

It's better this way, now he can live a normal life. I hope he's fine.
But maybe it's a loss for science. If they could've studied him, it could be intresting for them. I'm against that, though, he's a human not a lab rat.
Blasphemy!
...wait, this isn't English class. (book we're reading =P)
Man, that would have been a horrible childhood, so many kids picking on him. But then again, with a third arm, he could learn to fight, and damn....

 yeah, imagine playing basketball, or being a football goal keeper!
St0f - Yeah no humans should be lab rats, it's just wrong.
Wait. Where was the third arm?

The two of you (the ones who posted above me) are very insulting and offending. Just because there was one case of biological variance doesn't mean there's something wrong or different in the water. Wow.
Here, let me remove the bubble for you...
Environmental pollution from coal mining, bad habits in life and adverse hygienic conditions have been the main contributors.
..........
China has the largest population in the world and also has the highest incidence of birth defect, with national level at its highest in Shanxi Province. The monitoring data from 1996 showed the national birth defect rate of newborns was 99.62 per ten thousand.

I dont know why you would be so offended or find it offensive about something that is fairly common and a known problem there. I didn't say "wow" as in I'm surprised, I said it as in I cant believe it is still happening at such a large rate. And the fact they are pushing to become a superpower in the next 50 years, it may not get better.
This quote from the original article should set off a flag too.
Dr Chen's hospital is one of China's most experienced in dealing with unusual birth defects, including separating conjoined twins.

I'm really grateful for that poor kid. It's good he got it removed, I don't think a biological malfunction is any reason to make an innocent kid a test dummy. But I do think they should make an investigation of living conditions or the mothers health because it may help in future treatment.

Well its nice to know he's fine now, i was wondering if such a child was born in india he would be a hero of some sort, i mean like a decendant of Mahakali (a godess with numerous arms) anything abnormal here is considered as heavenly intervention.

Naw grafitTied, I highly doubt the villagers would praise an extra arm rather than moan at their ill fate, now if it were four arms, then...

As far as growing up mentally/emotionally, removing his arm is for the better. He would have been teased constantly. Physically, it'd be sort of a trouble (trying to make every shirt he has have 3 sleeves, anyone?)
To look on the bright side, if he had kept with 3 arms, he'd have somewhat of an advantage over some people. Multi-tasking, possibly.
It was for the better though.

I've just thought...
Imagine how well he would have been able to shred if they'd have kept his third arm...

I was half-asleep and in a confrontational mood. Sorry about that.

Yeah, that's what I said but some people would find him intresting to study, I guess...

I think they should have kept it, man he could have been good at some stuff. I think unless it was bad for his health it should have been left on.

yeah, he could shred pretty good with three arms.
It'd be ironic if he learned Pantera's "Use My Third Arm" as his first song though
when i saw it i was like WHOAAAA thats freaked out but yeah they said ""Neither arm was fully functional and doctors decided to remove the one closest to his chest after tests revealed it was less developed."" so it really was necesary wasnt it?

So, he has two arms now that aren't fully functional? That sucks.
